Georgia Tech's distance learning website for App Inventor

Barb Ericson and Deepa Muralidhar will lead this workshop which will introduce you to CS Principles and creating mobile apps using App Inventor. The CS Principles course is new Advanced Placement course being developed by the College Board and the National Science Foundation. It is intended to be a broad and rigorous course similar to a college level CS 0 or CS .5. It is intended for college bound students and intended to attract more women and under-represented minorities to computing. It will be offered as an AP course first in 2016-2017. There have been two years of pilot offerings of this course. Deepa taught a pilot offering of this course during the 2011-2012 school year and Georgia Tech taught it in the summer of 2012.

App Inventor is similar to Scratch in that you do drag and drop programming. App Inventor was originally created by Google for Android phones, but is now supported by MIT. The workshop will run from 8:30am - 4:00pm with an optional Georgia CSTA chapter meeting at 8:00am. The location for the workshop will be in the Molecular Science & Engineering Building, Room G011. For directions please visit: Please park in the State Street Parking lot – it is free on Saturdays. Directions to our State Street lot can be found here: Teachers must attend the entire workshop, do two hours of addtional work, and attend a webinar on Feb 20th from 8:00pm - 9:00pm to get credit. Georgia Tech does have a lending library of Android phones that teachers can borrow for up to 3 weeks at a time. See for more information.

All teachers must register at Georgia public high school teachers must also register at for workshop CTAERN3598 (new catalog).

This workshop is free for Georgia teachers. Thanks to our National Science Foundation grant we may be able to pay for the hotel for Friday night (2 teachers per room), Friday night dinner, and Saturday breakfast if you are a Georgia teacher who lives more than 30 miles from Georgia Tech. We will let you know if your expenses will be covered after you register. We have limited funding for this so apply early if you need a hotel. If you would prefer a private room you can pay 1/2 the hotel cost ($69.02 for half). We do not cover alcohol or room service! We will cover parking for Georgia teachers who stay at the hotel and reimburse parking for Georgia teachers who do not stay at the hotel. We will pay for lunch for all teachers. Space is limited to 30.

Please bring a laptop if you have one, or notify us if you need to borrow a laptop.

Out-of-state teachers pay $140. Checks for $140.00 should be made out to Georgia Institute of Technology and sent to:

8:30 - 9:00: Overview of CS Principles, Difference between Pilot II & Pilot III. Different approaches taken by different Pilots.
9:00 - 9:10 : Going over the Big Ideas along with the Computational thinking practices. Introducing the Learning Objectives.
9:10 - 9:45: Big Data: Concept, Idea and Research activity
9:45 - 10:30: Implementation of a Big Data activity
10:30 - 11:20: Problem Solving & Abstraction
11:20 - 11:30; Questions
11:30pm - 12:00pm Lunch
12:00pm - 1:00pm Create your first app - Cowbell
