DESCRIPTION

What were the goals?

Our goals were to successfully be able to tell a story in a similar fashion to a comic book using a series of chronological panels. Throughout the storyboard, we were to often make the same person reappear multiple times in an image, as per the plot's requirements. Originally, the idea was to write our own script that would find the differences in a stack of multiple images and mask those. For example, if we took five images from the same location on a tripod, each with one individual in a different location, the script could determine where the person was in each frame, and then mask it on the layers in the stack above.

How stock footage was captured

All photos were taken digitally, either handheld, or from a large or short tripod.

Other Material that was used (acquired!)

The hard materials used other than the camera were tripods.

Tools used and HOW?

As per software, Adobe Photoshop was primarily used. Pictures taken from the same location (unmoving camera on a tripod) were layered, and masked as needed so that the same person could appear multiple times on the final, flattened image. In some instances it was simply not practical to do this manually, and we then used _____. As in the tutorial given in class, we were able to extract certain parts of each of a stack of multiple images, restitch them together, and again have the same effect.

One different effect used was in the frame where Christian split into multiple selves. Produced in Photoshop, this was simply multiple layers stacked, masked, and then set to varying opacities.

What worked?

All of our manual efforts in Photoshop, as well as the results produced from ___ were successful.

What was unexpected?

Because of our prior knowledge of the tools utilized, everything fortunately went as expected.

What did NOT work?

Upon getting further into the project and doing mockups in Photoshop, we realized how unneccessary it would be to spend so much of our efforts writing a script when there are already a number of programs that do the same thing better.

How would you fix it?

With this realization, we chose to use those programs, and shift our efforts into making a larger scale final result, rather than simply one image.

Thoughts for the future of this effort?

This effort was surprisingly successful. The mockups in the first/research part of this project were infinitely helpful and informative, as they detailed what exactly we would end up doing for the final. If we were to try something similar again, I feel we have a solid enough understanding of what we did conceptually, as well as physically, so that we would be able to focus more on other techniques and effects.
