What is intelligence?
The topic of the first reaction paper is what is intelligence. Feel free to give a synopsis of your argument here and we can start a discussion on what are the most important 'features' of intelligence.
Whats wrong with these two definitions? Marty
- Intelligence is deliberative action requiring planning and making accurate logical decisions
- Intelligence is reacting quickly and effectively to your environment
The problem with these statements is that Intelligence is the ability or having the computational and emotional skills to take deliberate action... or to react quickly... Daphne
I think that intelligence is the ability to learn, reason, decide, and respond accordingly. However, I do not feel that an agent must possess emotional skills in order to be considered as intelligent. Adrian
Are animals intelligent? Are some animals intelligent but not others? Is there a difference between human and animal intelligence? we'll get to some of these questions in the course in a few weeks as well... Marty
I think intelligence requires awareness of the self, if one is not aware of one's actions, and thoughts then it is merely carrying out orders...Semmere
I definetly think animals can be intelligent, but I think that what makes an intelligent human is far different from what makes an intelligent panda. Animals adapt for their situation. There is no way to construct an intelligent test that can work for all species, every attempt at that has failed. At one time it was thought learning sets were the answer, but unless chicken and minks are very intelligent and rhesus monkeys are not, that will not work. We cannot even define intelligence well for humans, how can we expect to be able to quantify it in animal? Angela
