Feb. To Do
1. Fix gender page and movie
2. Ask for permission to include Ed's article on Cardboard Chair and put on main cChair index page.
Video Comparison page
Make specific page that explains the logic of video comparisons. Be sure to make videos so that young/older children designers can be compared – Gucwa's kids. Make sequence of British vs American designers. LABEL the pre-fab comparisons.
Compare different students doing experiments - want teachers to evaluate problems that students have with designing their own experiments.
Simulations
Include links to the simulations for Paper Bridge and Parachute, and explain how students might be less inclinded to get stuck on their first design solutions if it is virtual and not physical.
Pedagogy and Teaching Strategies
Create a movie on design rules of thumb.
Page on Problems with Design Tasks - too long, kids' attention on task, not teacher. Create clip directAttention.
Create a page about Tradeoffs.
Create a movie and page on Messing About.
Create a page detailing the lesson plans I did for Toni's class.
Create a page: Building Mental Models – explain how a mental model of paper will lead students to not use paper that has been folded, and predict where it will fail better. Also show a video of parachute falling through liquid to build a better mental model of air flow and turbulence, which may lead to better predictions of which unfamiliar parachute designs will work.
Parachute
Add "Student as Coaches"
Include links to the Nova website, and include my lesson plan for Toni's class.
Student Work
Student Work that I feel it would deserve still an interactive page where a students work was on display and teachers could write comments, and then see what the teacher then wrote, might be an interesting approach to this underutilized section of DITC.
Do a section on STUDENT MISUNDERSTANDINGS for each of the sections that I can, with video when possible.
Cardboard Chair
1. Make movie where Ed gives overview of the chair, in its broadest strokes.
Pedagogy Page
1. Rapid Iteration – describe first, then link to Sadler's stuff, including Overview at designTasks/paperBridge/index.html.
2. Emergent Problems – good example where Ed talks to group about how team doing Tall Tower ecountered and solved emergent problems (refer to McCormick on this). Refer to the emergent problems from Apollo 13 movie, the problem of ripped cushion on the Mars rover's airbag landing system
3. Stuck On First Designs – Describe problem, then tell of how Goldman attempted to solve this by holding off on giving the design challenge until later; how Bernie Z does it with his Standard Model; and how Kimbell used group discussions to get greater divergence in solutions.
4. Learning From Failure – moved from page on Stable Descent, but does not yet have a home.
12.5.03
1. Include Student Misconceptions with each design activity.
2. See if I can get some teachers to take a workshop by Paul Hewitt – ask Ed G, and see if we could get both tech ed and science teachers. And then shape the workshop so that it involved the value of drawings in design, sci and eng'g understanding.
3. Include citation on juggling.mov.
4. Make the grid that compares different curricula.
5. Make Full Movies once editing is completed.
11.22.03
1. Find movie of the wake behind a boat for Bryan's work on howParWk and "alternating vortices".
2. Edit the newly captured Yasmin interview tapes and include in Gender movie.
