cChair2a 0:05 Use same sized font for title as later on in movie. Extend time for reading by 2 seconds.
cChair2b 0:04 Do not go to black, but transition from 50% still to moving picture.
cChair3b Put timecode in movie and rerender.
cChair7 Redo as there is missing footage in the movie.
12.17.03 cChair3a
1. 0:00-0:04 Put a background still at the opening frame.
2. 0:00-0:04 Change the title after the color to read "...: Presenting the Index Chair Challenge." Change the end title as well, and the date.
3. 0:03 Do not start the audio until you fade out the main title. Look at some of the day1-7 videos from the early Goldman editing for examples.
4. Timecode is missing from the entire sequence.
5. Get a copy of the Guide to Paper Structures – I believe that Cliff has a copy of this. Pan the page just like we pan the page for the Introducing The Parachute Challenge In a Technology Classroom and elsewhere.
6. 0:53, 1:18, 1:36 It would be nice to have a picture from the worksheet of the different techniques for joining paper without tape or fasteners here.
7. Please check to see if I was on with a second camera.
cChair3b
I see little change here. I wanted to get the pan of all of the students' index card chairs that were in the back of the classroom – it's at the end of one tape. I also would like a closeup of the board drawings showing up in cChair3a. We need direct interviews with kids talking about their chairs without Ed. Look to the end of the logs for G100 and G101, which have not been captured, for some footage.
cChair4b
1. 0:00-0:04 Change the title to read: "Quarter-Scale Cardboard Chairs: Student Work"
2. 1:07 Is there any earlier footage to set the context of the second Asian's discussion of his chair?
3. 1:23 I've said this before, but I took some establishing shots of this guy's chair before interviewing him. (like you show in 2:15, but only with the sound) Ed's comments later on will make more sense once this is done. It's unusual proportions is something I think needs to be seen before the kid talks.
4. Drop 1:25-1:36, which answers a silly question I asked about rotating the chair 90°. See if you can reorder the clips so that
5. Perhaps drop 2:20-2:29 and see if Ed is still making sense of things.
3. howChairWk.mov Add the clip IN20-4MoreToChair (in Interview v.125) to the beginning of the tipping section of this sequence. Need to add timecode. Would be nice to show an anitmated tutorial showing an object, then identify Center of Gravity, then show dotted line going down to ground. When dotted line is not within the boundary of the object's base, show the object rotating and tipping over. I'll do the voiceover later. Would be nice to have the still pictures of chairs from the board, at the end of the tape from which the clips came, even if we don't have Ed talking about them, since we can get him to do it a bit later.
4. cChair1b and cChair2b have no still in the background of its slate. Choose some images to put in these places.
5. I found a 12.17.03 version of cChair3a, cChair3b, and cChair4b and moved them onto the website. If I don't get to it, can you check to see if you finished those minor changes to these two movies?
6. Look at the new DVD Studio Pro document that Dung has been doing, and suggest the following: (i) revisit the issue of signaling the user for 5 seconds on how to stop a movie once it is playing, perhaps with a DITC icon next to a text message; (ii) suggest changes to the interface as it is evolving, or its coding. He wants to meet you to ask a few questions.
7. Make filmstrip with 6 windows.
1. Give title: "Index Card Chairs: Student Work" By the way, cChair4a should read, "Developing Ideas By Designing Tiny Chairs: Ed Presents the Index Chair Challenge"
2. 0:19-0:25 Put subtitles for what the black girl says, if discernable, otherwise drop."
3. 1:11 Soften transition
4. 1:22 I believe there is B-Roll footage showing the chair – put this before the demo of how the chair would collapse. Follow this with the clip of Ed G talking about it 2:38-3:10.
5. 2:15-2:22 Drop
6. Move 3:11-3:42 this to when Ed introduces cardboard - for half-scale, or the intro to full-scale.
7. 3:46-4:16. Move this to the end of Group1 talk. I thought I had asked Ss in the first group the height – try to find and include. Keep group footage together.
12.16.03
1.cChair1a
0:00 Background art should be used in cChair1b, swap with background art from sequence cChair1b, which also is misplaced.
0:04-0:06 Drop flashing message of extra footage (no need to put such a message)
1:54 Put "Because large cross-sectional area."
1:59 Subtitle should be "Oh, skillful! You got it right?"
3:07 Put italized subtitle for what the boy answers here. "Right where it gets thin."
2. cChair1b
0:00 Use background art from beginning of cChair1a for the slate.
0:03 Have the following appear as a title after the slate goes away. "Students' second investigation of paper structures involves loading paper tubes of various lengths and diameters with books until they fail."
0:20 Do we have a preferred sound track around here. Would like to avoid crinkling paper.
0:21, 0:38 Is the watermark on top of the text? Should we have text on a layer above the watermark and time.
2:35 Add the word "Investigations" below Short Column VS Tall Column. I think this portion of the video has good footage and could be included with the introLBD.mov.
3:07 Has offline materials.
3:10 Add the word "Investigations" below Short Column VS Tall Column.I think this portion of the video has good footage and could be included with the introLBD.mov. Perhaps combine both. The latter is better to include because the results are "correct" in that taller towers are less strong than shorter towers.
4:01 Background art is misplaced. Use background art from beginning of cChair1a for the slate.
4:01 Add questions at the end:
1. Ed tells one team not to reuse a tube once it is crumpled. A microscopic view of paper could help understand why. How could you model paper fibers in a smooth sheet of paper? How would the same fibers look when the paper is crumpled?
2. The two groups arrived at different results for their tube tests. How would you address this in class? The "standard model" would say that the strongest tubes have a larger diameter and are shorter. What caused some tests to show the opposite?

7.cChair4b.mov
0:00-0:01 White screen, no video
cc5Half
0:58 Smooth out transition with some effect
3:40 Add the following questions:
1. What message(s) does Ed give the teams that would apply to most groups doing half-scale? Which are tailored to specific designs?
2. Analyze this: When is Goldman student- and teacher-centered?
3. Use of technical vocabulary helps people explain design decisions. How did the team at 1:22 do at explaining their designs?
11.23.03
1. Please make the slates for the following movies identical in formatting: edTran.mov & earlTran.mov; edVar.mov earlVar.mov & whtBoard.mov; earldemo.mov; brdgdemo.mov; eddemo.mov.
11.18.03
1. Bryan - Create a tapeClass.mov, with instructions on making movies of your own class, based on footage you shot of Toni's classroom last week. ALSO, give a single-frame picture from this movie to Cliff for inclusion as a clickable graphic link in the DITC website for this movie and page.
Timeline Redo
Shorten titles to 3 seconds.
12.13.03 ccSafety.mov
1. Change slate to read, "Safety Issues: Using a Utility Knife In The Tech Ed Classroom" (the latter part of the title should be in a smaller font, as with introPar.mov.
12.12.03 useDITC.mov
Looks pretty darn good overall.
4. 0:56:10 Show the cursor going up to Model Parachute, clicking that name in the Purple navigation bar, and then watching the Quick Peek movie for Model Parachute (VO where I see "Quick Peek" should be redone).
5. After showing a second Quick Peek movie, pick up the story that shows the user visiting the Cardboard Chair challenge. Instead of clicking on the image of the Timeline (which not longer appears on the page), have the user moving at 0:57;23 not downward to the Video Timeline thumbnail near the bottom of the page (it no longer exists in the new version), but moving horizontally to the left to select the Video Timeline from the the teal navigation bar, and then going to the Video Timeline page, and picking up the story at 0:59;06 where the user passes over the Timeline navigation bar.
6. 1:02;25 Update the still image for the Introducing Orthographic Project Drawings movie. Have the cursor go down and select a small piece of each movie from Day 3 of this activity.
7. ADD a section where the Gold Bar navigation area is passed over with the cursor, and then select the Video List/Compare section and show this in action. I would compare the discussion of variables that Ed has versus Bridget or Earl.
0. I think we need to update the top navigation links (in the gold area at the top of the page), mainly because the Video/List Compare link has a different name and is in a different place than before.
1. 0:41-0:44 - speed up the scrolling down the PD Table to its lower limit, and then scroll up to the section at the top of the Table related to Paul Black. Pause there (at 0:46), and then show the cursor moving over to the document and movie, and then going back to the scroll area and resuming the return to the top of the page.
2. 0:49;23 Before clicking on the paper bridge frame, scroll over and show the rollover (with titles) of each of the movies.
3. 0:49:26 Rather than having the cursor stay between the two movies, move the cursor so that you play the Overview of Paper Bridge Challenge movie for a few seconds. The sound should be heard softly in the background, until the VO on this topic ends at 0:56;10.
trailer.mov
The short fix to this sequence on this would include:
1. Add watermark and copyright message at the end of this. I don't see the need for timecode here.
2. Include a bit from cases (show Chan), evaluation (Ed G talking about testing), and other challenges cardboard chair and paper bridge challenges (Nancy saying "That's why were going to investigate this..."). We need some voice over, and to less or eliminate the music track.
makeMovies.mov
1. I want to see a rough cut of whatever you have, so that we can get this completed by end of Saturday.
ccSafety.mov
Please DROP 0:13-0:21, and reorganize the clips of this sequene to the following:
A. 0:41-1:42 IntroBoxCutter
B. 0:29-0:39 not all that expense
C. 0:21-0:29 not break off knives
D. 0:03-0:13 spring breaks
E. 1:42-end (I don't think the b-roll works, so probably drop it.
cOverview.mov
1. 0:03-0:03;10 There are a few spurious frames of goldfish right after the slate goes away.
2. 3:55-4:10 Please raise the volume up on the presentations at these times.
3. Put 4:40-4:50 before 4:32-4:40, and then follow it with the spanish male's response to the teacher's question about women being better leaders than guys.
12.11.03
1. Put in different images to the opening slates of the Chan movies. That would mean changing two of them, and keeping one of them the same.
2. Please show me where you are placing the numeric info for placing the timestamp and watermark.
ccOverV
a. 0:38 What is the source of errant background sounds here – can they be removed?
b. 1:13 Ed's comments are post-activity analysis – not the best thing to introduce the tower challenge with. I would like you to look at the original footage to see if Ed introduces the tower challenge in a usable way. The rest of it works fine. In fact, the pace and flow of the entire movie seems right.
c. 2:16 The title goes beyond the scrolling area. Whole text block has room to move to the left and still stay title-safe.
12.9.03
1. Find the "lost" captured clips from Ed's cardboard chair and show me it so that we can plan what sequence to put it in.
2. Finish the subtitles for the Chan Analogy movie.
2. cChair2b A. Add watermark and timecode. B. Rough transition at 0:24, smooth out. C. 0:35-0:45, 0:50-0:52, 4:11-3 Elevate sound for student's response and create subtitles so that users know what the kid is saying. Did the other microphone tracks for either camera capture this better? D. Improve transition at 1:16. E. Make a copy of 1:31-3:29 and place in a new theme section called "Ananlyzing Failures" E. Drop white frames. F. Change title, beginning and end, to "Tallest Paper Tower: Class Review and a Lesson on Structures
4. cChair2a A. 0:09-0:30 Double check to make sure that one channel of sound is not better than another. Ed is wearing the microphone during this time. B. 1:05 See if you can format the subtitles so that it looks a bit better. Left-justify, perhaps? C. 1:12 Put subtitle for what the girl says is her design, and try to elevate the sound on this. D. 0:00-1;51 Check the sound for this entire sequence, since it seems we're not hearing Ed's mike
C. For now, put a single-frame picture from your video shoots on the Taping Your Own Class page – gettingStarted/tapingClass/index.html. Switch out when you finish the movie.
D. introLBD.mov Change slate ofto read "Quick Peek: Overview of Model Parachute Challenge" and put a different background 50% opacity picture, perhaps 4:54 or something with students in it. This needs to be changed to parOverV.mov.
E. Bryan, the strip art with 2-5 frames that you created works quite well - thanks. Ginger complemented you on your illustrations.
3. Change the slate of the introPar.mov to read: Quick Peek: Overview of Model Parachute Task. Use a different still image for the first few seconds of the sequence – something with kids doing parachute drops makes sense. Keep the still at 50% opacity.
collapsePar.mov (Should be in the Themes project or in Goldman - I'm not sure)
0:03-0:08 In the compressed movie, the drops show up as 10 fps, and going at a faster than normal rate. Correct this, and put a slow motion version right after each regular-speed clip. The original footage for this might be on the Lab Mac machine.
inflation.mov
0:00-0:10 There is an unintended slug in the beginning of this movie. I think that the FCPro version of this already has the correction (or so I think). Look on the OfficeMac drives for a compressed movie that is newer than the date Feb 2 03.
Title Change the title in the beginning and end of the movie to "Is Bigger Always Better: How Well Does The Canopy Inflate?"
11.16.03
1. Bryan - We need to combine cc1a, cc1b, and cc1c into two movies. To do this, take 0:00-0:54 from cc1a and put it into the beginning of cc1b. Then take the rest of cc1a and put it in the beginning of cc1c. Please then rename the two movies cChair1a and cChair1b.
2. Combine cc2a and cc2b. Just put them in order, in a single timeline. Note that we still are missing the sound for the first 1:25 minutes of cc2b. Change the slate to read: "Build the Tallest Tower With 2 Sheets of Paper: Task Intro & Group Work" Please rename this movie cChair2a. Also, do not start the timecode clock until the movies start – it now starts when the title users read the title before the moving video. Also, in the current cc2b, at 2:16-2:20, we have just a freeze frame. Perhaps it should be faded to black and then brought back up when Ed talks about the kids' undedrstandings. The last two frames of the Nov 11 03 cc2a and cc2b end in white. Avoid this in the new version of cChair2a and others.
3. Change the slate of cc2c to read "Build the Tallest Tower With 2 Sheets of Paper: Class Review" be cChair2b.The last two frames of the new cc2c end in white. Avoid this in the new version of cChair2b and others.
4. Look at the new footage included in papBrdg3a – do you think the last minutes with Nancy doing a second class can be effectively incorporated into the latter part of that sequence? I put a green Mark around 6;12 as a place where N11-16 could be inserted – I think that in the latter part of N11-16 and N11-17 that the kids are less cooperative with Nancy, and so we might just leave it out. But there might be something salvagable in the early part of N11-16. What do you recommend?
10.3.03-1 cc Overview v3 Edit Requests
0:00 Slate should read: Quick Peek: Overview of Cardboard Chair Challenge
1:00-1:16 Excellent editing.
1:22 Somehow I feel we need a pause between the towers and the next. How about a silent showing of a few of the index-card models to presage the Week 3-6 piece here.
2:06-2:24 Move the clip which is about sizing up from 1/2 to full scale until after orthographic project drawings. Need to have something about half scale before we move on to full scale. Move after 3:56.
2:09 Stretch this clip so that it includes Ed saying, "2x2x2, eight times"
2:36 Have a ribbon read, Graphic Literacy
3:54 Drop title, "Good footage to be used..." Then add footage from fullscale, and more clips showing adults sitting down as kids set up for their presentations.
11.11.03
cc2b.mov
Scene 0: Change font size to match cc2a, and change title to read: "Tallest Tower: Exploring How To Make Paper Stand Tall"
Scene 1: Sound is missing for the first minute of this sequence.
End Sequence: Put new date to reflect changes in this and other sequences. Replace "Pedagogy Alert" with the new title.
End Questions: Increase font size and center the questions a bit better. In #2, change the word "design pproaches" to "design ideas". Correct spelling of "experience" in #3. Change the wording of #3 to: "What questions might you ask to get students to reflect more on their previous experiences with structures that would help them with this design? Make sure that the watermark is visible at the end of this sequence.
2. Change slate of papBrdgOverV.mov to read: Quick Peek: Overview of the Paper Bridge Challenge".
11.7.03 Toni Laman IR1-1 thru IR1-25
1. First set will be helpful for the instructions on taping your own class, of course. I like IR1-4 more than IR1-3.
2. I can see how the clips around IR1-6 through -10 will be helpful for the footage that I need on Monday showing the use of LogIR.
3. R1-14 Camera that was used for IR capture also had a tape in it – did you get that, since this tape would have the better sound that the current clip.
4. R1-15 is the drop of choice, because I got captured it pretty well with the LogIR camara, got the sound on that tape, and this is the drop that we were able to replay for the students in slow motion. I remember that during replay, all the students were gathered around to see this drop.
5. IR-21 has the problem of the camera-to-hybrid-drive wire being too stretched. Dont' use unless you have to – I should get an RCA-3-plug "extension cord".
6. IR-22 is not a bad clip, though what shows up on screen is not all that revealing of key ideas or science skills. Since I'm going to be having a discerning audience, we need something to work really well.
7. I really don't want shots of me handling the camera, if at all possible. I need to show that this stuff can be done by students themselves, or as a worst case, with the help of their teacher.
8. IR1-24 may be important, but the sound will be better on the IR camera, and I would like you to use b-roll to keep me out of frame during the discussion.
9. IR1-25 - Does not seem important.
NOTE: Two important scenes that we need: a shot of the kids sitting at a desk, and discussing what they watched; shot of teacher watching a clip with kids, and discussing what they watch, perhaps preceded by a discussion that is not informed by LogIR, for easy constrasting of the two conversations. It might be very helpful if you come for a second shoot.
11.3.03 papBrdg1b
1. Change slate to read "Class Instructions For Single-Load Bridge"
11.6.03 Nancy IntervPapBridg
1. 0-1:33 Make a recommendation as to whether we should integrate this clip, actually N11-NancyInterview1, into pBrdgOverV, which is on your To Do list, or into chalPhyS, which is Phil Sadler's overview of the curriculum. My feeling is that the former is the way to go, since the Sadler piece is complete (though it could use a teacher to break things up), because the overview needs some commentary, and because the overview is higher up in the hierarchy, and is more likely to be watched than if it is buried further into the site.
2. I believe that N11 and N12 both have the same Nancy interview, but that the sound is better on the former, and the video is preferred on the latter. Please check this out, and coordinate shots between the two cameras as needed. I am noticing that the sound is not so hot from N11 with these Nancy interviews.
3. 1:35-2:52 N11-NancyInterview2 needs to be integrated into the desgnInq.mov. I am now thinking that dsgnInq.mov needs to be split into two parts – one focusing on the tech ed perspective, to be called dsgnInqTE – it will contain mostly Ed and a bit of the interview with Steve Adams that I conducted on my last day shooting him in Washington state a while back. The second will be called dsgnInqSC, and will have science teachers' views on this critical issue. Both movies will be viewed on the same HTML page as a paired video comparison. Please include the reediting and creating of the new dsgnInq movies for you to do sooner rather than later. You can grab some clips for this from the FCP project collection "Interviews", especially from the Earl collection, but check around in other interview bins for any and all footage on Inquiry/Design. Regardomg the clip in question, we don't need the particulars of Nancy's school system, which occurs in the middle of the clip. The last part seems worthwhile - that some kids in her class will never do design.
4. 2:52-3:51 I think this clip could also fit in dsgnInqSC.mov more than pBrdgOverV.
5. 3:51-5:17 This clip, NIntv4, fits best in dsgnInqSC.mov and is quite important and good because Nancy is smiling and showing how science approaches might not lead do making a good design task.
6. 5:17-6:01 NIntv5 belongs in a new sequence to be called pBrdgKeyIdea. I also think that the piece where she is talking about materials might fit with papBrdg1a, but could be wrong. What do you think?
7. 6:01-6:58 NIntv6 belongs in the pBrdgOver and in the Theme for Informed Design. Please copy and insert it there.
8. 6:58- Include NIntv7 in a new sequence in Themes called ModelsInDesign
11.5.03 papBrdg1b
0. Put together the multidrive system that I just received through the mail.
1. Create an Overview of Paper Bridge Challenge.
2. Complete the papBrdg3c movie, which coordinates N11-N12 footage
3. Need to capture video of Interviews with Nancy from N11, N12 (logged recently by Samiran), and an unlogged tape, IN5 Nancy Interview 2.11.02). This interview footage will make its way into Theme movies, and perhaps also some of the movies for papBrdg, bakSoda, and elecMag.
