• 12 forts: 6 larger, 6 small
• 400 large guns
• 400-man garrison for each large fort (2 companies of artillery, 1 of infantry)
• completely subterranean
• each fort had a large searchlight
• dry moat around each fort, 30 ft deep
• trenchwork and barbwire between forts was incomplete at the time of the German offensive, for political reasons
