WORKSHOPS: 10am – Noon

  • WORKSHOP 1 - Scenic Archetype I
    • Je77 Rick
    • The purpose of the two workshops (10am to noon, 4-6pm) is twofold: First, it is to familiarize participants with scenic archetypes, a new kind of plot-driven long-form improv. Second, it is to prepare workshop participants to perform a scenic archetype show on Saturday evening. Deep learning requires practice. Improv requires putting yourself out there. This workshop / performance should provide an interesting opportunity for participants to learn something new and work in an entirely new setting. Since performing requires trust in your fellow performers and it takes time to establish trust, it is asked that you attend both workshops.
  • WORKSHOP 2 - The Little Things
    • Bill Cochran
    • What seperates a realistic character from a funny-voiced stereotype? A grounded game scene from a meaningless pattern? Good scenic moves from pulling something out of your ass? More often than not, it's the little things. Like finding your point of view and committing to it, listening to your partners, treating your environment with respect and all the other things that we tend to gloss over. This workshop will focus on heightening, playing the game of the scene and all those other improv mechanics that we use to make things funny, but doing it in a way that's hip and doesn't sacrifice the artistic side of improv. You never have to seperate being funny from "doing good improv" and the little things are the key. Previous longform experience is strongly encouraged.
  • WORKSHOP 3 - Storytelling
    • Amber Nash
    • Workshop focuses on narrative storytelling in short and long form improv work. In this workshop, we will be exploring different ways to tell a story with your scene partner(s) and your environment.
  • WORKSHOP 4 - Improv Fu
    • Wes Schrader
    • If you've spent time learning both martial arts and "improv arts," you may have noticed things in common about how they're taught, how they're learned, and their perspective on life, the universe, and everything. This workshop is the result of a long search to find a way to blend the best of these two different but similar disciplines. NO martial arts experience needed. We'll be using simple meditation techniques and improv games to explore this new area. The focus is much more on personal work as performers than doing "show" games. (Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a notebook.)
  • WORKSHOP 5 – Group Mind and Long-Form Theory
    • Jim Karwisch
    • This workshop will be a venture into Group Mind and its application within scenework. Techniques to help your troupe perform as one mind will be explored as well as techniques from long-form improv that can be used to improve your short-form or long-form play. A Question and Answer session will be used to tailor the material covered to the workshop's specific audience.

LUNCH: Noon - 1:30pm

WORKSHOP: 1:30pm – 3:30pm

  • WORKSHOP 1 - Untitled...
    • Robert Lowe
    • "I will not know what I will do at the workshops until I am there with each gathering. They will be unique and tuned to the level and need of each group. I know this may make it hard to sell, but it is the only way I work." ~Robert Lowe
  • WORKSHOP 2 - Nice Vacuum, Don’t Live In It
    • Topping Haggerty
    • Learn to be a strong physical improviser. Develop techniques to physically establish, use, and maintain your space object improvised universe, even if you don’t have a frickin’ clue as to who you are, where you are, or what the hell you are supposed to be holding
  • WORKSHOP 3 - Improv Singing Basics
    • Tommy Futch
    • Learn the best approach to musical improv with one of the finest musical improvisers in American improv today, Eric Frampton. He will show you different styles and ways to work with the musician, while Laughing Matters Tommy Futch helps you think outside the box when looking for rhymes, rhyme scheme and brainstorming.
  • WORKSHOP 4 - Forget the Rules: Attack Scenes Ruthlessly
    • Dan Izzo
    • This workshop focuses on creating scenes that quickly engage the audience, your scene partner and most importantly YOU. Rather than playing defensively and worrying about the rules, this workshop will focus on playing in a vibrant, engaged and confident manner. The most important moment of any scene is its opening; performers should therefore strive to engage the scene immediately with confidence and authority. The workshop consists of exercises designed to increase the energy and commitment available to players at the top of a scene as well as some exercises designed specifically to increase player's skills in free form (i.e. long form) improvised scenes.
  • WORKSHOP 5 - The Truth Will Set You Free
    • Jon Karpinos
    • And the truth is, you're sitting on a goldmine. In this workshop we'll run focused monologues, two-person, and group scenes to explore (1) the joys of playing yourself; (2) ways to use your own experience to blow up your characters; and (3) how to make specific choices that will take your scenes out of the realm of the sit-com, and into the realm of pure gold. Appropriate for folks with shortform, longform, or any other kind of experience.

WORKSHOP: 4pm – 6pm

  • WORKSHOP 1 - Scenic Archetype II
    • Je77 Rick
    • The purpose of the two workshops (10am to noon, 4-6pm) is twofold: First, it is to familiarize participants with scenic archetypes, a new kind of plot-driven long-form improv. • WORKSHOP 2 - Just Do It, Still Doing It, Just Did It
    • Scott Abrams
    • In improvisation there are a lot of rules and a lot to think about. What you can do, what you can't do, what you say, how you say it, who you are, where you are and why do we care? But as we all know, the second you stop to think on stage, you stop, the scene stops and the audience stops having something to care about. This workshop focuses on and provides techniques on how to get out of your head and stay there. As well as demonstrating what to reflect on before, during and after a scene, so that each scene may be a lesson for future scenes.
  • WORKSHOP 3 - Character Assassination
    • Topping Haggerty
    • In a fast-pasted environment, learn to build your repertoire of improvised characters. Along with physical and verbal skills, increase your capacity to listen to the characters interpersonal dynamics and use it to make your partners life a hilarious living hell (that would be the character, not the improviser).
  • WORKSHOP 4 - Improv as an Art Form
    • Bob Wood
    • The philosophy behind this workshop is basic - Improv is only an art form if getting out of bed is an art form... and it is.
  • WORKSHOP 5 - Torture Reincorporated
    • Jonathan Wells
    • We all know about reincorporation, especially across a longform. Now we will hone our ability to speed-raise the stakes through threes and character torture. In this workshop we will focus on the magic of threes within a single scene (be it a piece of a longform or a scene standing on its own). We will discuss the total ins and outs of the Rule of Threes and see just how easily the game is born. The game is torture, and it's easier than you think. Make improv easier for yourself and your team, and come build or sharpen this tool for your improv toolbelt.
