Java Ranch - campfile stories about binary, variables, polymorphism
The Institute for Computing Education will offer a 4 day Intermediate Programming in Java workshop. This workshop will help you teach Grorgia's new Intermediate Programming course (see http://www.georgiastandards.org/career.aspx?PageReq=PhaseI). The workshop will take place at the Regency Suites Hotel (Magnolia Room) located at 975 W. Peachtree, Atlanta GA.
We will cover working with sound, text, and graphical user interfaces. We will create a 2D game. We will cover Java syntax, iteration, conditionals, input/output and exceptions. We will cover class and object variables (fields) and methods. We will also cover object-oriented principles: objects, classes, encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism.
The workshop will use a variety of activities to help you understand these concepts: lecture, role-playing, small programming assignments, and object-oriented analysis and design using CRC and UML.
You must have previous experience in programming to take this workshop! If you do not have programming experience you should start with the Computing in the Modern World June 17-20th 2008 workshop. If you do have some programming experience, but no experience in Java you should start with the Beginning Programming in Java June 23-26th 2008 workshop.
The workshops will be held at the Georgia Institute for Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. You must attend all 4 days in order to receive 3 PLUs. The hours are from 8:30am - 4:00pm each day (with at least 1 hour of homework each evening). There is a $160 fee for this workshop for Georgia teachers. Out of state teachers will pay $425.00. Due to a NSF grant we will be able to cover hotel, parking, and food for Georgia teachers who live greater than 30 miles from Georgia Tech. Guests will be staying with two teachers per room at the Georgia Tech hotel, unless you wish to pay an additional cost for a private room which starts at $69.50/ night. The link to the GT hotel is http://www.gatechhotel.com/index2.asp. We will also cover lunch for all teachers. Preference is given to teachers who are teaching Intermediate Programming or AP CS in the Fall of 2008.
Checks or purchase orders should be made out to the Georgia Institute of Technology. Space is limited to 30, so please send your payment as soon as possible. The payment is refundable up to 1 month before the workshop begins. Send your payment to:
