Mainly used for Web assignments/browsing/email and constantly playing MP3s. This machine can run Win98, Win95, or RedHat. This is the first machine I could really call my own, and I got it when it was top of the line (seven or so years ago). It was given it's name mainly because I like words that begin with 'Gn' (such as 'Gnash', 'Gnat', etc.), and a slight pun on Monty Python's 'Ni', when many years ago I would say 'Neef!' as a word of silliness. Thus, when I was in a silly mood, I might feel 'Neefish'. The second reason is the computer is named in honor of the two computers of the guy who first introduced me to Unix based systems. His computers were named 'onefish' and 'bluefish' after the security system named after the Dr. Seuss book. In addition, there was a final association in my mind with computers and fish. I'm not sure why this is; maybe because the computer labs in my highschool were called fishtanks. For this reason, all computers I have named end with 'fish' or something fish related, and all computers I own begin with 'Gn'.
In reality, my work gave me this machine because I was just a summer intern and I wasn't technically allowed to have my own machine. However, nobody wanted this one because it was so 'slow' (a free computer is never a slow computer). This computer runs FreeBSD, Mandrake, or Win95. It was named with the normal prefix and I also wanted to express the idea that it was more like a small computer. Thus, I named it after a guppy instead of a full sized fish. This is the laptop I bring to classes so I can play nethac– I mean so I can take notes and do my current programming assignments. Right now, this is the computer I'm doing all of my Squeak on.
Mainly used for programming, running gaim (which is better to configure with the firewall since their servers don't frequently and randomly change and go down, and I can make my firewall rules very specific). I was originally going to make this computer my firewall, but decided against it for a reason I can't remember now. The 'ir' inside the name was supposed to be analagous to 'ir' in 'fire' (like, firewall). I bought it for $20 specifically for use to configure as a firewall, but have since found other uses for it. This computer has had, at one point or another, most of my hard drives in it. The hard drive that was originally in this computer is now in my firewall, Gnirmfish.
This computer was named after Gnirfish, because it had Gnirfish's original hard drive and because I wanted the 'ir' inside the name to remind it it was the firewall. I can't remember what the m was for. It might be an upsidedown w (like 'wall' in firewall). Either that, or it was the only other thing I could fit into the word that would still be pronouncably distingishable. I got this computer because the place where my mother worked was giving away a bunch of their old computers. I'm always happy to have free computers!
I have a brother, he's ten years younger than me, and not much in to computers, but I thought I might set this one up for him so he could play games and stuff on a computer that isn't my mother's (she likes computers even less than he does). I haven't much use for this one because it has a completely integrated motherboard with no slots for expansion (it's a little black compaq). In addition, it has no network card. Unfortunately, I haven't done much in the way of setting this computer up... someday I'll get around to it I guess. I also got this one when my mom's work was giving away their computers to me. Hey. It was free.
My work gave me this laptop too, but let me keep the old one because I was still happy with it and no one else wanted it. I use this one to dial up to the government machines and stuff (No, I don't work in the goverment, I just work on an air force base), and since my hub is too small (only four ports), this is the computer I've decided not to put on the network. It would be bad if it died, however, because it keeps track of my 19 hour class schedule, when I'm supposed to do work for Resnet, when I have club meetings (anime, ESP, GT'LUG), and my class assignments and tests. I gave this one the name of minnow because a minnow is like a small fish, and a laptop is smaller than a regular desktop computer...
