Comments for Week of Jan. 5, 2004

Comments, questions, issues, complaints?

It would be really helpful if you went ahead and got the new pages up so that those of us who desire to do so can get on with the labs and so forth.

(Sorry, forgot to sign it!) Jaron Hendrix

For those just coming into this class - I had it last semester and I can honestly say that it is really worth putting some time into (i.e. going to class and spending time understanding the programs). I've been using JES over the break to build web pages and edit photos - which is fun - but more importantly - it has saved me tons of time. This class gives you tools you can actually use. Stick with it, seriously, and best of luck!

are we supposed to go to recitation this week?
Absolutely! I just held two recitation sections today! Mark Guzdial

There seems to be a problem with using the "attach" feature of the coweb. Clicking it brings up a dialogue for username and password. Jaron Hendrix
Only from off-campus. See the FAQ for more on this. Mark Guzdial

I am having trouble opening the presentation for the first lecture....it may be the computer that I am on (IBB Bldg, Dell). Well, I was just wondering if anyone else was having a problem with opening the presentation.
Tracy Lee
What kind of "trouble" are you having, Tracy? Mark Guzdial

The username is "attach" and the password is "carmen".
Summer McWilliams

Tracy – yes, my browser crashes whenever I try to access one of the Powerpoints. I am on my home machine.

That was Michael Tashman, btw, who posted the last message.
Yech! Okay, I'll check on it. Mark Guzdial

Okay, I just tried it on my Windows XP computer, and the PowerPoints worked just fine. What operating system and version of Microsoft Office are you using, Michael and Tracy? Mark Guzdial

does that imply you are repeating the class?

I'm another student from last semester, (who's on the coweb to get the address of the webpage I made). Anyway, this course is one of the best offered at this school. Fulfilling the CS requirement is no longer about struggle, failure and fostering a hyper-competitive attitude. After 1315, computers make much more sense and I feel one hundred percent comfortable programming. It truly is well worth whatever effort you choose to put in it.

I am running redhat 9, what do I need to install to get goin in this class?

We don't support Linux per se – it's not part of any of the required student ownership packages. But it should all be quite usable. On the CD, install the Mac OS X version. You'll need to install Jython for your platform from http://www.jython.org. CD into the JES directory and type ./jes. That should execute jython on the JES source (which is in Jython). Mark Guzdial

I think that the first day went well, but I would like it if there was more time taken to explain all of the things he spoke about on mon. he just went too fast.
Nadine

Thanks, Nadine. We'll watch the pace. I promise that new ideas will appear more once in here – they'll be hit repeatedly in lecture, and breakouts, and in the book. Mark Guzdial

Hellow! I just took the first class(breaking out) today. It was interesting, especially seeing cats and listening someting through JES. Anyway, I registeresd lately. I could not make the real first class. What did you cover? Is all I need reading and reviewing your presentation?
You-il Park( Chris )

I recommend reviewing the slides on the Syllabus page, coming up with questions, and bringing them to next Breakout section. Mark Guzdial

I'm running JES with no problems under FreeBSD 5.1-Current with native Java. If anyone has any questions, I'll do my best to answer. Gavin Mead

I haven't been able to turn in the Lab 2 yet and I followed the directions as far as i could tell. I get a message that says "you must select a file to attach."
poof #14

LAB 2!?!? Over-achiever! :-) I don't know if we have turnin set up for Lab 2 yet. Give us until Monday, please. Mark Guzdial

When will the TA's assignments for Spring 04 be updated for us to check on who our TA is? Susan Kommeth

We just got the rest of our TA's on Friday. I'm hoping that we'll have everything settled by Monday night. Mark Guzdial

I'm working on the first part of Lab2, and I can't get it to load, but I e-mailed my code to a friend in the class and it worked. Is it a problem that it won't load on my computer even in the code os right? Katherine Wrobleski

My bet is that the spacing got changed via email. Check the spacing on yours. Also, please do tell us the exact error you're getting. That does help. Mark Guzdial
