NO MAKE UPS OF ANY KIND (HOMEWORK, QUIZZES, EXAMS) WILL BE ACCEPTED BEYOND FRIDAY OF THIS WEEK.
NO GRADE DISPUTES/CHANGES OF ANY KIND WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER MONDAY OF FINALS WEEK. You may not have everything graded by that time, since we had to push back due dates because of the NCAA championship games and other factors.
All grades are due from the TA's by Wednesday at noon of Finals Week. We're grading the finals on Thursday of Finals Week.

What comes after CS1315? has been updated with the description of CS1316, the minor, and the new BS in Computational Media degree.

The below class is open to undergraduates. CS1315 should be a good preparation for this.

MUSI 4803A - Special Topics in interactive Music. CRN 82411 - Tuesday Thursday 1:35-2:50

Theoretical and practical issues in computer supported interactive music will be studied in readings, class discussions, survey of current technology, and development of large scale final projects. The permit-based class requires background in music and programing. Background in electrical engineering, cognition and perception, and/or media arts can be an asset.

President Clough has asked all faculty to consider the NCAA Tournament in scheduling examinations. Based on his request, Take Home Exam #2 is now due Wednesday April 7 at noon. I've pushed off the HW5 and HW6 deadlines to Monday (from Friday) to give time for those. Mark Guzdial

There is an error in LAB 5 in problem 7 we had you calculate variance by hand using a formula for population variance, SUM(I2:I328)/327 then we had you use the excel function VAR which calculates SAMPLE variance. That has now been changed. The correct problem 7 will have you using VARP which is excel's built in population variance formula. We will accept both answers(the one using VAR() and VARP() as correct. However go back and use VARP() and youll notice something. Larry Olson

Folks have asked me to talk about the range of difficulty on Sp2004 Midterm 2 Review.

Form Letter: The problem I just added last night. It's like what you can expect on the midterm.
Short Essay: Just like what you can expect.
What's the underlying representation?: Ditto
Internet Questions: Ditto
HTML Questions: Also ditto.
Sound Timing: Very ditto. If we gave you something like this, we'd give you code, too.
What do the programs do?: Ditto ditto.
Re-mixing the recipe: Direct copy from past Midterm #2. Ditto.
Encoding and Decoding: Copy-paste from last year's Midterm #2. Ditto.
Count 'em up: I like this problem – ditto. You should be able to do things like compute the percentage of A's in the string, too.
Gendered random sentences: Copy-paste from another term's Midterm #2. Ditto.
The Rainfall Problem: We did this in Sp2003 Midterm #2, and it was too hard. So this is at the high end – if I gave a problem like this again, it would be easier.
Graphics from a List: Hard problem, harder than I'd actually give on the midterm. Solution is in the book.
The Cover-Up: Fun problem. I'd give more examples (like of file.read() and file.replace()), but it's like what you can expect.
Address Book Functions: Copy-paste from previous term's Midterm #2. Problems like this can be expected.
Reverse a file: This is actually quite an easy problem: Read the file using file.readLines(), list.reverse(), then write the list back out to the new file.
Mirroring, Generalized: The sound version of this is actually in the book. The string version is a little harder than I'd put on the midterm, but it's a good exercise.
Rewrite the splice: (a) is directly what we had on last term's Midterm #2. Like what you can expect.
Re-splicing the splice: Splicing is a little harder than I expect you to do without a computer, but you should be able to understand it and do things like this, like the Sound Timing problem.
Making sounds to order: We actually didn't get to additive sound synthesis this term, so this problem wouldn't be on the midterm.

If you are having problems with "403 Forbidden" on the CoWeb, please contact me (Mark Guzdial) or your TA. We'll help you get it fixed, and you can have until 5 pm on Tuesday to get your Lab 5 posted. (Note that this is NOT including "403 Forbidden" errors on Prism – if you're getting those, FOLLOW THE LAB DIRECTIONS EXACTLY, especially with regard to setting the permissions/settings on the public_html folder!)
The CoWeb was down last night, but from what we can figure, only from 11 pm to 9 am, which doesn't impact everyone. We will give you until 8 pm tonight to post your Lab4 HTML page, to deal with with the lost time.

Due to the annoying Student Center construction, and the inability of my lungs to cope with all that sheetrock dust and noise, I will be temporarily shifting my office hours to the College of Computing Commons until the construction is complete ( a few weeks). I forgot to bring the pre-quiz #2 to class today. As I promised then, I am posting the pre-quiz here.

Prequiz2.pdf is attached here as a PDF file. You will need to print the pre-quiz and turn in the completed hard-copy just as though it had been handed out. If you have genuine problems (e.g. no access to a printer or the network over the weekend) talk to me before or after class on Monday.

Apologies for any inconvenience my forgetting the prequiz may cause you. Of course, many of you did not attend the lecture. In your cases, having the pre-quiz posted online is a reprieve.

Folks, there IS NO RECITATION in CS1315! Instead, there are LECTURES and BREAKOUTS. The Breakouts are both lecture and recitation, combined. They are absolutely mandatory and will occur every week.

The Syllabus and Lecture Slides-Spring 2004 now has all the due dates for the entire semester on it, including quizzes and exams and homework.

The book for CS1315 is available now at Engineer's Bookstore (on Marietta Street). The GT Bookstore apologized – they had my order, but somehow forget to place the order. They're doing so now, and will have them soon.
