All grading issues must be resolved by MONDAY DECEMBER 8 AT NOON. There's literally no time left after that to get the grading done and get all grades done. If you have concerns, talk to your TA or me before then. Mark Guzdial
Please, PLEASE, go do the CIOS survey at http://www.coursesurvey.gatech.edu/! We especially need feedback on new courses – to fix things going wrong, and to get data of what's going right. Let us know what you think of CS1315! Mark Guzdial
In response to the soapbox: Nope, lecture was in the normal places. I couldn't be at the 1 pm lecture (I was presenting to the Mandatory Student Fees Advisory Committee), but Adam REMOVED demoed Squeak and showed the video about kids using Squeak. I was at the 3 pm lecture. Where were YOU? :-)
| Again, in response to the Soapbox: Sorry that the presentation came off as "random." Part of the role of this class is to show you the scope of what computing is about – that presentation fits in with that role. Yes, the College of Computing is very interested in increasing the diversity of its majors–more women and more underrepresented minorities. Toward that goal, they're making this pitch in CS1371 and CS1321, too. You might have also noted that Kris mentioned, in passing, that some of you might be interested in a CS minor–there is some serious work going on right now to set up a CS minor. So part of the presentation was to interest folks in that, too. The last part of the 1 pm lecture was a video on how elementary school students are using Squeak, and a demo of that "tiling" programming in Squeak, to give (again) a broader view of what computing is about. | :-) She's a good sport – she's okay with it. She understands that I want to have the same picture go through multiple transformations so that you can understand what's going on in each. Her concern is if SHE'S ever asked to teach the class (she taught CS1321 and CS1322 as a part-time instructor this year), it could be uncomfortable for her. (But since all part-time instructors are being laid off, that's less of an issue.) Mark Guzdial |
Yup. You have two hours and fifty minutes to finish it, rather than one hour. It's significantly longer. Mark Guzdial
BTW, Student904 – I think your grading program is very cool! Mark Guzdial
I'm afraid so. The "beta" book (see the cover below) will be out in January, and has a lot more than your course notes. We'll use the "beta" through Summer, and hopefully will have the full book in the Fall of 2004. Mark Guzdial

I'm sorry – I only had a few folks offer their collages, and after discussion with design folks, we decided on Rachel's. I do appreciate those that offered permission to use their collages! Mark Guzdial
I agree! Pearson's design folks did a great job! Mark Guzdial
I do know GMU – I've visited there several times. Thanks for the plug! Mark Guzdial
:-)
Also, don't forget – tell your friends who need CS1315 and want to see Europe to sign up for the Oxford program this summer! I'll be teaching CS1315 (and helping with CS1371) there this summer. It's going to be great – small class (20 students max), taking digital cameras around Oxford (and having a scanner to scan students' work), playing with audio like "Mind the Gap!" from the Tube... There are 140 students signed up right now, with a target of 150, so move quickly! Mark Guzdial
We are grading tomorrow (Wed.) all day. I'm out all day Thursday at a Faculty Retreat. I'll compute grades and get them into Oscar on Friday. If there's enough time, I'll get the finals into Webwork, too, but I can't promise that–it depends on time available. Oscar has to come first. Mark Guzdial
Nope – the CoWeb stays as it is. I'll change the front page, but the URLs of your pages will stay the same. Mark Guzdial
Thank you! BTW, let me update what I said before on the collages. I wasn't offered rights to use many of the collages, so if I didn't pick yours, it may be because you didn't offer it. But I didn't want the previous comment to sound like we "settled" for Rachel's. I think Rachel did a great job, and I was really pleased and appreciative that she offered it for use on the book. THANKS, RACHEL! Mark Guzdial
