Comments for Week of Nov 10, 2003

Questions, comments, concerns?

It would have been nice to have our grades back on HW4 before having to turn in the take home exam - that way we would have known how we did on the homework and what was wrong with it before we had a test grade on it. Just a thought for next semester...

Take Home Exam 2 made me cry a lot. And I was really very stressed out about it, but in the end I ended up getting it to work perfectly which was awesome. And I think the lecture topics are important to know, but some of the concepts are definately going over my head.

I agree with the first comment!

I get so frusterated when it takes so long to get stuff graded. For example, I just got HW3 back today and I got a 95. Thouguh it is not a bad grade, I look back on it and have no idea how I could have lost 5 points because I think I remember satisfying ALL of the requirements...but then agaion it was so long ago....

I agree with the above comment. Grades should come in sooner!

Maybe we have the same TA.

Probably

i think that all The TA's should grade the same way...some TA's let people hand in later Homeworks while others dont..some TA's give you back points on tests or homeworks if you correct it while others dont..kind of annoying!

The TA's are supposed to be grading the same. I approve all grading criteria. If you find specific cases, please do let me know and I'll work to correct them. Mark Guzdial

Some seconds to those comments: as a TA, it is hard to get everything graded within a week. It takes a lot longer to grade things than you might think. Also, I try to give my students the benefit of the doubt whenever I can, and I know the other TA's do the same. Just some thoughts...Kelly Farrell

I don't think it makes sense to have Homework 5 come so long after the lecture on animation - I don't remember much at all, and while I can go look at the slides easily enough, it just seems more logical to have the homeworks correspond to the lectures better than they currently do. A thought for next semester?

I agree, I definitely think the homeworks should correlate better with the syllabus

We have a better fit this semester than we did in the Spring, and in general, we try to have the assignments close to the lectures. This time of the year is hard, though. We don't spend much time on movies, but I think it's worthwhile to build ONE. I don't really plan on having people do much programming in functional and object-oriented contexts, so there won't be any assignments directly related to this stretch of the class. The last assignment is meant to draw on several topics, so it will of course be separated from the actual lecture topics. And finally, having to go back and think it through again will actually lead to better learning – yes, the assignment is harder then, but you'll learn the content better and for longer because you'll have to reconstruct it for yourselves. And in the end, my job is to help you to learn, not get through the assignments more easily. Mark Guzdial

I enjoyed the "Elves" demonstration during Friday's lecture. It really helped me better understand recursion. #12

would it be possible to push back the due date for the hw6 to wednesday because i think if i do two cs assignments in under 5 days i may explode

Absolutely – I meant to do that but forgot. Fixed now. Mark Guzdial
