Looking at last semester's first mid-term is discouraging because of how fast I will have to develop these simple code manipulations to use in modern applications.

I didn't quite understand that: "how fast I will have to develop these simple code manipulations to use in modern applications"? Are you saying that you'll have to learn alot for the test? Or that we're not teaching you enough to write modern applications? Or that this is too simple? I welcome constructive criticism and feedback – could you try again to express your discouragement? Mark Guzdial

I think this is really simple, but I've had some experience with python before so maybe it's just me. But I feel like I can already do a lot of the homework and stuff without going to lectures.

I'm sorry that you're bored. Perhaps you should consider taking CS1321 instead. This class is aimed at people who have had no prior programming experience at all.

Are others finding it too slow? I can certainly pick up the pace and cover more content, if everyone is feeling that it's too easy. Mark Guzdial

I didn't say I was bored. I like the class, I just don't think it's hard.

I have no programming experience at all. It's not too slow for me. I also don't want to hold others back. Mark Hilmy
P.S. Do students here in GA get ms office really cheap?

please DONT pick up the pace. most of us haven't had any programming experience!!

the pace is fine...this is for people who know nothing about programming so those that do can take the other class

The pace is definitely not too slow.

Oh, I definitely agree that the pace is fine as it is. I came into this class pretty fearful of what sort of experience I would have, and I find myself actually enjoying it now. The pace allows concepts to sink in before we start piling new ones on, rather then having us try to manage multiple concepts all at once.

This pace is absolutely not too slow. Please don't speed anything up!!!!!

Please (one more plea) do not feel as though you need to speed up!

I understood the Homework One assignment, completed, and have turned it in. Should I still go to recitation? What material will be covered?
We're going over distance, pixel manipulation, and posterizing this week in recitation. Recitation is recommended. There's a quiz Wednesday, Sept. 10 so recitation is your chance to review the material and ask questions. Angela Liang

Thanks for the feedback on the pace.
Recitation last night and tonight is on the turnin process and posterizing. If you don't need help with either, you're probably safe skipping. Mark Guzdial

I've been getting some emails saying that emails I sent were rejected because of a virus, since I downloaded the antivirus software (which is good to know, don't get me wrong) and I've done a scan and it's all clean. So- how do I update my software with new virus descriptions like everyone says has to be done? Will McAffee do it automatically? And, the firewall always asks me if the comp. is allowed to enter an IP address, and I don't know the difference, so I always say yes- is that OK?

You're probably fine. SoBig.F sends out emails with FAKED SENDER addresses. If you've RECEIVED any SoBig.F emails, then there are also some virus-ridden email going out with YOUR EMAIL as the SENDER. When those emails get detected, YOU get the response, even though you didn't really send the note. If you have antivirus software installed, you're probably okay. Mark Guzdial

Where are the lab and HW grades posted?
thanks
On WebWork. Mark Guzdial

right, it is the sobig.f emails i'm getting, thanks - i was worried :)
