Announcements- Fall 2007-2

December 10

The final will be graded on Wednesday. I hope that all grades, including any late homework grades and pop quiz #4 will be entered into TSquare by Thursday. I can't promise when I will enter official final grades into OSCAR, but it has to be before noon December 18. I will post a dummy spreadsheet to the slides/code page so that you can calculate your official grade based on the grades entered into TSquare. Remember that the calculation is complicated, because only the top n-1 pop quizzes count, and there is a previously announced adjustment to test grades too. I use 60/70/80/90 as the grade boundaries and don't curve. But if there are a bunch of students whose grades straddle a grade boundary, followed by a gap until the next student below, I will move the students whose grades are very similar up (but never down). So if you have 89.8 you may get an A.

Please note that the College of Computing Technical Services Organization is doing essential maintenance to some web servers starting this Friday morning. It is possible that I will be without email from Friday until Monday, so I am not ignoring you if you send me a grade-related question over the weekend and I don't reply. TSO really needed to start this work by tomorrow to ensure that essential services continue, but faculty/student communication is so important during finals week, they agreed to delay. I hope that you, like me, appreciate their flexibility.

Hey everybody, we will be having class on Friday to review for the final. There will also be review sessions at noon on Sunday and 5 PM on Sunday, room TBA. The in-class review will cover different topics than the other reviews, so I would recommend attending both. Also, I will answer questions if there are topics that you are confused about. Thanks! Brittany Duncan

Important change in calculation of final grade. The final exam is cumulative and is designed to assess your understanding at the end of the semester. So it is a more valid assessment than earlier tests. To help those of you who did poorly on one of the four tests but do well on the final, I will replace your lowest grade on the tests by your final test score. (E.g. Say you get 95% on the final, but got 65% on Test #2. In that case, I will replace your Test 2 score by 95.) Note: This doesn't work the other way round. You can't be exempted from the final, and if you do less well on the final, you can't replace your final score by your best test score! Colin Potts

Several things:
  1. When posting to the Soapbox, please DO NOT delete previous posts. You can clear out the bubble by preceding your message with an underscore.
  2. There is a comments page for comments. There are questions pages for homeworks/labs/tests. Those are the appropriate places for comments and questions.
  3. There is an announcements page for class announcements. Announcements (like this one) that are made in the Soapbox may not be visible for long. In the announcements page, they stay forever. You should check that page regularly.
  4. ALL email communication concerning the class should be from/to GA Tech accounts, NOT hotmail, gmail etc. Please remember to include CS1315 in your subject line for all email messages. The TAs and I are as responsive as possible to all queries and comments, but we aren't responsible for lost/misdirected email if you don't follow these guidelines.Colin Potts!October 11

font color="red"Sorry for the change everybody, but when you submit anything on T-square, make sure that you press the "Submit" button and not the "Save Draft" button as you have done in the past. The "Save Draft" button will keep your work, but will not ever submit it. However, once you have pressed "Submit", you can't change anything without e-mailing your TA the new files, so try not to submit until you are sure that you are done. If you e-mail the TAs after 11:45 PM, your submission will still be late, so make sure that you e-mail them in time if that is what you need to do. Once again, I'm sorry about this change./font Thanks!Brittany Duncan

Ok, so apparently my PRISM password expired a lot sooner than I thought it did, so I am going to have to go to OIT and get them to reset it. Why does this matter? I won't be able to get into my e-mail account. So please keep this in mind if you have not gotten a quick response from me and you sent me something this weekend. I should have everything fixed by this evening.Student3703

For students who have had problems writing pictures because of the "read-only" error, here is the cause and the remedy. (1) Cause: Even though you may be writing to another folder, JES initially writes a temporary file into the JES folder. When it is done, it copies that to your intended destination. If your JES folder is read-only, you won't be able to write a picture anywhere/em. (2) Remedy. Change the read-only flag of your JES folder. (Right click on the folder and go to menu item "properties" in Windows XP to do this.)

My basement has a plumbing bug, so I am mopping up there and will not be in my office for office hours today. But I will be around virtually via IM/email and the HW questions page.Colin Potts
The first test will be on Friday, Sept. 21. All the material on basic programming techniques, Python syntax, and picture manipulations will be covered./fontColin Potts
If you are running MS Windows Vista and are still having problems running JES, it may be because you have an older version of Java. Java SE 6 is the version meant for use with Vista, and there have been issues with older versions of Java on Vista, particularly with applications using Swing. So make sure you are using Java Standard Edition 6.Colin Potts

The first homework has been posted. (See "Assignments" on the Home page). It is due next Monday. We will normally give you a full week's notice and not announce the posting of assignments, but since we lost a day to the long weekend, this is to alert you./fontColin Potts
Ok, so it has come to the attention of the TAs that there is a problem running JES on the Windows Vista Platform. What you need to do is to download JES onto a jump drive/ thumb drive, and run it from there. Feel free to e-mail someone if you still have problems./fontStudent3703

Is anyone else finding the download of JES 3.0.6 impossibly slow? For those of you who are having difficulty downloading it and who have a copy of the textbook with the CD-ROM, please go ahead and install JES version 2 from the CD. You can upgrade to 3.0.6. as soon as we sort out these difficulties. If you don't have a copy of the CD-ROM and don't have a friend with one, hold on and wait for a follow-up announcement about Plan B....whatever that is.Colin Potts!August 23
