Lab 1 Questions from Last Term


for the prisim accounts it says to turn in the lab like this:
REMOVEDbject line: This should read " - Lab 1, Part 1"
Message: The message should include your GT number (gtxxxxx) and which email client you are using.

my question.... is my client gt spectrum mail if i didnt use anything like outlook express before? and is it ok if it says gtg###@mail.gatech.edu instead of prisim.gatech.edu? or does that need to be changed?

I am trying to configure my Oulook for the email. I had already configured it for my prism mail prior to this assignment. When I try and configure it according to the web page the secure connection (SSL) for the SMTP server does not work. I cannot send/recieve mail with this box checked. What do I need to do?
I'm afraid that I don't know what it means. Do uncheck secure password authentication as the next person suggests. Mark Guzdial
I use Outlook also: when you go to the Account properties, click the Servers tab and make sure that the box that says to Log on using Secure Password Authentication is unchecked for the outgoing and the incoming mail. Then on the Advanced settings make sure that the incoming mail (server requires a secure connection) is checked. The outgoing doesn't need to be. I hope that helps.
In the email turnin part of the lab assignment what does this mean "email some MediaComp email address from your client" ? I just want to know who to email this to that is all :D

You send the email to cs1315@cc.gatech.edu. (I emailed Professor Guzdial and that is the address he sent me.)

For the email turn in...I use Spectrum so my from line says @mail.gatech.edu and not @prism.gatech.edu. Is this ok?

After configuring my outlook express and adding the new "security" settings... I couldnt email out to the cs email we are suppose to. I got this weird error message: "The server does not support a SSL connection. Account: 'GT E-Mail', Server: 'smtp.prism.gatech.edu', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250 8BITMIME', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D"
If your email was working previously, turn it back to the way that it was. Mark Guzdial
Okay, so the lab one turn in page is locked or I'm doing something wrong because it won't let me save. Is there anything else I should be doing to fix this? It comes up with an error message saying that I need a password.

Does it make a difference if my gt email is forwarded to my hotmail...could this be why it doesn't work?
No, that can't possibly be confusing your outgoing email. Just send email via Hotmail. Mark Guzdial
So... we're supposed to post to this site as part of our lab, or only if we have a question...? whatever. Oh, and Microsoft Entourage for Macs wasn't on the list of example mail servers, but is it ok? It's pretty much like outlook. =)

I tried to attach an image to my personal page but a password and account window showed up. is it the same as my lock password?
If you're off-campus, you'll be prompted for a username/password to upload files. Use "attach" for the username and "carmen" for the password. Mark Guzdial

I live off campus and have Bell South DSL, and my computer is connected to the internet through my roomates computer...does this make a difference? I can't get outlook to work either. I tried unchecking the boxes suggested earlier, and it still won't work. I also tried using mail.bellsouth.net instead of smtp.mail.gatech.edu, and that didn't work either! Any suggestions????
If you're off campus, mail.gatech.edu won't work. Try mail.bellsouth.net, or contact Bell South and ask them what your mail server is. Mark Guzdial

I use Outlook and have Bell South DSL also and my email initially couldn't send. If you're having problems with sending, I emailed OIT and they told me: "If you are off-campus, try enabling SSL for SMTP. Also, instead of using port 25, try using port 465 or 587. If all fail, I would examine the presence of any personal firewall products such as ZoneAlarm installed on your computer and completely uninstall it." Switching the port numbers worked for me.
I'm posting on the Questions page. My question is: who's running a Mac? I'm going to need all the help I can get with this junk. It doesn't seem too bad but it's gonna be tricky. Why do you think I am a MGT major?!?! Thanks.

Jennifer, I use a Mac. You have to start JES differently than I did in class on Windows. You need to open the Terminal application (it's in the Utility folder inside of Applications). You need to "cd" to the directory where you put JES, so it'll be something like "cd /Users/jennifer/jes" Hit return. Then type "./jes" (That's period-slash-"jes"). Hit return. That should work. (It'll take about 20 seconds to start.) Mark Guzdial

Do we still have to type up our virus report in notepad? Can I just write it like an email?

In the JESIntro it says that after we close the window another window will pop up and ask us some questions like name, gt#, and mail server but it never did. How do I input this info if it didn't ask me for it?

Everyone seems to be having soooo much trouble with setting up their accounts. I live off-campus and am using Spectrum. All I did was sign into the website and send email. To me knowledge, there haven't been any problems or errors.~ Rebecca REMOVED

I cannot get outlook to work on my computer using my gte account. Is this going to effect submitting homeworks from jes on my computer?

I use earthlink as my server and I was wondering if I am supposed to type pop.earthlink.net or smtp.earthlink.net as the server for turning in Homework and projects using JES?

Try mail.earthlink.net. I use mindspring at home, and I use mail.mindspring.com. Mark Guzdial

My outlook won't ask for a password when I open it; it just opens my account. I don't want it to do that. How can I make my identity or account (or both if they're different entities) accessible only through password verification?

Can loading JES on my system be the reason my system is now running slow and freezing occasionally?

I configured my Outlook Express so that I can access my gte account but after sending the email, the "From" line simply states my name and not the email address. Is this okay if clicking my name shows my gte email address?

The labs for Fall '03 will be slightly different from those presented here from Spring '03. The new labs will be up by the first day of school. I suggest you wait until then to begin.
