I went through all the steps to change my email so that I would have a prism account, but when I went to type the email the address was not gtxxx@prism. Instead the email address as my Georgia Tech address. What did I do wrong?

I don't know which mail program you are using. But for each program, you are providing the email address. To change it to the correct email:
Outlook- put address in "Email Address" box in the Internet Accounts window.
Eudora- put address in the "Return Address" box when you are in the Options window.
Mac Mail- put address in the "Email Address" box in the Mail Preferences window.
This is the same type of process for any other mail program.

I am sorry, but I don't understand the difference between my current gatech email address and the prism account. Are they not the same thing? To access my gatech email, I go to webmail.mail.gatech.edu and type in my address: gtLXXXL@mail.gatech.edu What do I need to do? What program do I need to use?

Your GT email and prism account are the same thing. The lab says that you have to use another email client, such as Outlook, to check this GT account. You can choose which client you like best. Use the instructions of Lab 1, part B for configuring this client. If this doesn't answer your question, feel free to post again! It is acceptable to use Spectrum Webmail (webmail.mail.gatech.edu) to do this assignment. Sorry for the confusion. But it is possible to change your email address on the Webmail site. Go to Options -> Personal Information -> Edit Your Identities. Fill in your address (gtxxxxx@prism.gatech.edu) in the boxes that say: "Your From Address" and "Your Reply To Address". Lauren Biddle

I am running Windows Me on my computer. When I went to the OIT software distribution page for Lab 1, Windows Me was not available as a choice for "software type." Which operating system should I choose?

Win 95/98 if possible. If not, we recommend upgrading your operating system. Mark Guzdial

Part 6. of lab 2a is giving me a lot of trouble. I keep getting the same error and can not figure out why. Here is the error.

There is no file at C:\JES\mediasources\Elliot-hello.wav
An error occurred attempting to pass an argument to a function.
Please check line 5 of C:\My Documents\lab2a.py

My recipe is exactly like the one in the lab. I have a feeling the problem may be the location of my media sources. Can anyone help??

(For the future, please put your comments in the correct area.) It looks like you are running Windows, so did you put the "r" in front of your file name string? If that is not the problem, then you probably installed mediasources in the wrong place. Try walking through the directions for installing it again. Lauren Biddle

If we are going to be out of town and participating in the football game, is our lab still due on friday? We dont get our recitation session since we are leaving early on wednesday so we wont get to ask the need questions.

I'm sorry, but yes, the due date is Friday. The rules are that we allow you to miss the classes, but the responsibility to make up the missed work is yours. All the due dates for all the assignments are available from the first day of class on the Syllabus page. It is your responsibility to ask your questions early enough so that you can get assigments done in time. Mark Guzdial

i am having problems turning in my assingment
I did not see a "settings" button under "turnin" on JES that I installed. But it stated that it accepted my work. How can I verify that my Lab work was turned in

Do you want a detailed analysis for question 2, as to what is happening in each line of the recipe, or just a general idea?

I have tried to install JES for hours a day, every day, for about one week now. Never once have I been completely successful. I have followed the directions exactly, and have installed Quicktime for Java and even have tried to open it using DOS prompt. At best, I have gotten the black prompt screen from Jes-console to run for a few seconds and right when the Jes opening screen should pop up, the black screen disappears and nothing takes its place. My disc works on other computers, just not mine. I do not know what could possibly be wrong. Will I encounter any problems using Jes to program and turn in assignments at public computers, like the ones available at school?? What else can I do to get Jes up and running from my own machine at home???

When I try to open a picture somebody e-mailed me it will not open, I get an error message saying "the system cannot find the specified file" can anybodt help?

i think my computer hates me. well maybe not... anyways when i try to open JES, i get the error message "System cannot find file specified" then "Error accessing file/directory: Classes\ "

Hmm, never seen that one before. You were double-clicking on JES.exe? Mark Guzdial

Make sure that you have the directory "Classes" in your JES folder. If it still doesn't work, try copying the folder from th CD again. Adam Wilson

On lab 2 where it says to cut and paste the recipe, do we cut and paste all of the text or just certain parts, and once in jes do we hit enter

Give me a few days to go through that part of JES, or check it out in the book. You will be hitting Enter, but more importantly, you're going to be Saving and hittng Load, then typing commands in the command area. Mark Guzdial

i'm having a problem in turning in my assignment. I registered my name and gt number, and tried to turn it in. I get an error msg. I looked at the help file and it mentions a server to input however I see no such place for it in registration?

What error message are you getting? I think that's a mistake in the help file – you shouldn't have to input any server. Mark Guzdial

Turnins aren't set up yet, so you can't finish Lab2 just yet. They will be set up next week though, so you'll have plenty of time to finish it. Adam Wilson

For example1() where the string file = r"C:\JES\mediasources\Elliot-hello.wav" is defined, does it matter if my JES directory is not the same?

Yes. That's just an example. If you put the mediasources folder in another directory, you need to change it. One way to find out which directory the folder is in (if you're on a windows machine) is to right click on the folder and go to Properties. The target should tell you where the folder is located. For question 2, when you ask what the words mean in English..do you mean what is the purpose of typing those three words or what they mean in that context?

I installed JES on my computer, but when I double click on the snake icon it says "Error: An instance of this program is already running." However, JES does open properly when I click on the JES black box instead of the snake. Is this okay or am I missing something? Also, I'm not sure if Quicktime for Java was properly installed on my computer–how can I tell if it was? By the way, I'm using Windows 98. Thanks.

It means that you've already started JES somewhere and that you have to close it before you open another one. We'll explain more about QuickTime for Java in a few weeks. Mark Guzdial

I keep on getting an error message when trying to open JES from my C drive. The error reads "Unable to locate suitable Java Runtime Environment on this machine." I already downloaded the QuickTime Java. Why is this error appearing?

It means that you've installed Java already, but the wrong version (not the latest version), so JES is finding that, trying to start, but failing. Since you have your own version of Java installed, you need to update it. Go to http://www.java.sun.com and follow the links to install Java on your computer, then JES should run fine. Mark Guzdial

I'm trying to install QuickTime for Java but when i double click on the QuickTimeInstaller the next box to come up doesnt have an option for custom installation...it only lets me choose from a big list of programs. Am i even on the right path...if so, which of these programs do i choose because there are no choices for QuickTime, Java, or Jes???

Do you have this on a laptop that you could bring it to Recitation? After you click "Custom," you get a big long list, and QuickTime for Java is on that list, but I can't figure out what you're seeing. What's the title on the list? Mark Guzdial

I never get anything that has a "Custom" choice. The box asks me what program i want to open it in but i cant remember the title of the box because i dont have my computer near me until much later today.

Can you clarify what is meant by "Resize the box for the ASCII art to display correctly." It looks fine to me as is. Thanks.

Depending on how you put the text box around the ASCII art, the text box may shrink so you can't see all of ASCII. So basically fiddle with the size of the box until you can see the entire thing. #25

You'll probably want to ask Dr. Guzdial about how to work that out directly (either see him after class on Wednesday or e-mail him). As for asking questions–that's why all the TA's have Office Hours!

My computer has Microsoft Works and not Microsoft Office. Can I do the Word portion of the lab on Works word processor?

So when will we be able to turn it in? What should I do with it because I have finished. Will it disappear? I should be able to open it back up in JES because I've saved it, right?

For some reason i am having problems downloading quicktime, when i double click on it it a window comes up and it says "program not found" " this program is needed to open files of "zip" type, and then it asks me to locate the file.....i have no idea what the problem is,i copied the jes exe file to my c drive and that worked fine..but i cant open the quicktime part...what do i do?

You don't really need our installer. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime and install from there. When you get the choice of Typical/Custom, choose Custom and make sure that QuickTime for Java is checked. It's free. Mark Guzdial

This could be the dumbest question ever posted, but what should we do when we are spell checking the word document and we don't know what to do when the spell check doesn't recognize a word like "writability." There are many words like this in the document that you will find if you spell check. I was just wondering how picky the grading would be if you just left them alone.

We're not going to be too picky. Mark Guzdial

Do you want us to figure out how to correct verb confusion etc. when grammar check offers no suggestions?

If the grammar check doesn't flag it, you don't have to deal with it. Mark Guzdial

I am trying to install Jes on my Win98 system. When I click on the worm or go to jes-console it restarts my computer and my computer has to run scandisk. I removed it and copied it again, but it still doesn't work. Jes-console-lomem.exe restarts my computer as well

I am running Win98 as well and when I go to JES it never loads and then when I go to the JES-console it freezes up my computer.

Try downloading and running JES-console-lomem.exe off of the announcements page. It collects less memory, and should run better on low end systems. Adam Wilson

For Lab2-partB, when I saved the file to My Documents, it saved itself titled "lab3". Is this okay, or should I rename it something like "Lab2,PartB". Does this matter?

the spellcheck flags a lot of stuff that is right, like computer language names. do we decide what is right and leave it, and just correct the things we know are wrong, or do we change everything spell check flags? thanks

Do you want anything other then the page numbers in the footnotes of the word document and do we double space the title and author when it says double space the first 3 paragraphs. Also is Fortran correct or is FORTRAN as spellcheck keeps insisting?.. Thanks for your time.

The lab says to just put page numbers in the footer so I don't think anything else is required. The title and author should not be double spaced (they don't really count as paragraphs?). Fortran is "technically" correct (from dictionary.com):

The name is often written "FORTRAN", harking back to the days
before computers were taught about lower case, but ANSI
decreed, in about 1985 via the ANSI FORTRAN Technical
Committee TC, that it should be "Fortran".

But I don't think we are really being that picky. :) #25

For students who still can't run JES: Here's what you should try –

Try JES-console-lomem.exe on the Announcements page.
Try reinstalling Java on your computer. Especially for the folks who are having the computer restart on them, it sounds like you already have Java installed (so JES is using that), but it's an old or flakey version. You want to install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from http://www.java.sun.com.

my lab wont turn in. it keeps giving me an error message

If your lab's not turning in, and you are online: email your GT Number to your TA and say that you can't turn LAB 2 in.

I have the same question as someone's posted above (about the spell check stuff)yet it hasn't been answered since last night. It seems that spell check flags a lot of stuff that is correct. Should we just keep hitting ignore? It would help a lot if this could be cleared up. Thanks!

For now just go through the document and correct the blatant errors of spelling. If spell check flags something that is correct, you can either add it to the internal dictionary or ignore it. What we are looking for is that you ran the spelling checker on the document and corrected the most obvious spelling errors. #25

every time i try to run example1() i get the same error message, Filename C:\My Documents\JES\mediasources\Elliot-hello.wav could not be read.

Did you remember to do Step #4 of Lab2? Basically you need to copy the sounds and images from the CD to your computer. If you already did this then there is probably a deeper problem that needs to be looked into... #25

i turned in both parts of my lab and the first part was successful, but when i turned in my word document under media files, it said it was a .rtf file? did i do something wrong and if what. thanks for the help.

Word documents usually have the extension ".doc". The extension ".rtf" (Rich Text Format) is basically just another kind of document. It would be better for you to hand in documents in the "Microsoft Word" format. To do this, open up the file in Word again but this time go to File, Save As. Find the drop box that says "Save as type" and make sure "Word Document (*.doc)" is selected. Then hit save. That should change the extension. :) #25

i finished lab 2 part a, and i read through lab 2 part b, i am now trying to open up microsoft word to edit the file and it will not come up,it keeps saying "the page cannot be displayed" ....several people in the class tells me that the same thing happens to them....what do i do?? i cant do part b.

Try right clicking on the link and selecting "Save Target As...". Pick a nice location (i.e. Desktop) to put the file and then edit it from there. #25

The directions for formatting the Word document are slightly different depending on where you open them from. If you open them from the bottom of the Part A page they have a line which tells you to adjust the margins. If you open them from the 'Labs page' that's linked from the main page they lack this instruction. I have already turned in my lab using the directions without the margin adjustment. Will this be alright?

Every time I try to rune the program "example1()", the computer says "a local or global namecould not be found. You need to define the function or variable before you try to use it in anyway. However, my recipe is exactly like the one on this website and both the JES and mediasources folders are on my C drive. I've tried following the instructions over and over again but it still says the same exact thing. What do I do?

Did you make sure to hit the Load button? Another student having that same problem found that she hadn't hit the Load button. Mark Guzdial

I downloaded the mediasources file into the JES directory and the hello-elliot plays in QuickTime but it still won't play in the program. The error still says Filename C:\Windows\Desktop\JES\mediasources\Elliot-hello.wav could not be read.

I have already submitted Lab2, parts a and b. However, I just noticed that lab2a.py was saved in "My Documents" on my computer and it won't let me open it to look over my work again. Where should I have saved this file and how can I get it there now? I would just like to know for future reference because I don't ever remember saving it to "My Documents". Thanks.

It saves your .py file into your JES folder automatically. Look there to see if it is there. You can then move it to My Documents if you want. Also, you can always do a search on your computer for any .py files. This should find it and its location for you. Kelly Farrell

With regards to whoever is having problems getting Elliot-hello.wav to play: Are you sure you copied your mediasources folder off of the CD Dr. Guzdial gave you? Brittany Selden

I have finished lab2 part a, and have been trying since tuesday to get he word file to open up to save and do my editing for part b, but it wont open?...I have tried from a couple different computers and i cant get it to open? Is anyone else having this problem?

for example1() i found that the original function with just 'Elliot-hello.wav' works for me but when i follow the instructions and modify it to r"C:\JES\mediasources\Elliot-hello.wav" it says there is no file there.

The reason that it is not working for you is that you put the mediasources file in the wrong location. The mediasources folder should be inside the JES folder when installed correctly. This is what gives it the path name "C:\JES\mediasources\Elliot-hello.wav": it looks in your C: drive, then in the JES folder, then in the mediasources folder and then it finds the file "Elliot-hello.wav". Try looking at step four again and reinstalling your mediasources folder. Lauren Biddle

Make sure you have the entire path name to the 'Elliot-hello.wav" file in your code. Also, if it works right in the first part and not in the second, it might a problem with the second part of your code. Check over everything again because spacing and capitalizing are crucial. Also, try it with and without the r before the path name. Sometimes that works for me and sometimes its doesn't. Kelly Farrell

I was just wondering.. in question 2 u ask for a detailed summary of the JES code example1(), well when we edit it it becomes file=r"C:\JES\mediasources\Elliot-hello.wav, do u want the summary of that code or the original incorrect code of file=Elliot-hello.wav, thanks. VC

Depending on where you click the link to the WOrd part of the lab, one set of directions states to change the margins and one does not. I completed and submitted my assignment without changing the margins. Will that be accepted?

Could you send me an email at awilson@cc.gatech.edu and tell me what kind of computer(486, Pentium, Pentium3, pentium4, athlon, PPC) you have, what Operating system your have(Windows 98, 2000, XP, Mac 7, Mac X, linux, etc.), how much memory you have (256, 512). Also, JES will work on any school lab computer, you just need to register with it before you turnin assignments. Adam Wilson

I tried to turn in Lab 2 twice and my gt# hasn't appeared on my TA's list yet. Is there a certain amount of time before the gt# appears on the list?? I'm not sure what else to do.

No, it should appear immediately. If you're getting a success message on turnin, it's being put somewhere. There might be a problem in our lists, and it's getting uploaded to another TA's page. Look at the other TA's pages for it, and if it's there email your TA an tell them the situation. Adam Wilson

No, I don't get a success message...after I press turnin, the box just disappears, but no message is given...am I doing something wrong?

Make sure you actually have a file open in JES, that is on the turnin dailog it should say on the second line 'Submitting File: FILENAME' If filename is blank, you're not submitting anything. Also, make sure that you stay online for the entire turnin process. Adam Wilson

I also could not get mine to turn in and i tried several times...i emailed my TA and Professor Guzdial but got no response. I read on the soapbox that if we were having problems to email our TA and put our gt# and that we were unable to get the lab to turn in. Well my gt# is gte970u and i was unable to get my lab to turn in...I followed all the steps and tried to turn the lab in on Wednesday and then several more times today....Can i still get full credit for this lab somehow because it's been completed since Tuesday????? Someone told me tonight that if you live off campus then you have problems turning stuff in sometimes because of a nonsecure connection but no announcements were ever made about this. Amanda Hess

I turned my lab2 in on time but i do not see my name on the turnin list for the TA's. I'm sure i turned it in becausei asked if we had to turn it in by friday when we had been gone for the BYU game. Ather Brown

Lab 3

For Lab 3, you ask for the mode of the MPG column (column C), but the example says to use column D. Since you're asking for MPG, we should use C instead of D like the example says, right?

Thanks for catching our mistake. Actually, we do want to use column D since we are getting the mode of the number of cylinders. The MPG reference was just random. It's been deleted. Lauren Biddle

I tried to turnin my assignment using JES several times now, but everytime it says that "An unexpected error has occured in the turning process. It is likely that the program turnin has failed. Please check your Student ID and Server inside of JES's settings and resubmit the assignment." I tried to change the excel file name so there wouldn't be any dashes but again the same error. I turned in my second lab and first homework using JES just fine.

I just noticed there is no Lab 3 folder in cs1315turnin site, I guess it's not ready yet.

Lab 3 (and Lab 4) now have folders. Knock yourself out with turnins. Lauren Biddle

For Problem 7, my calculated variance answer is different from the answer excel's VAR function is returning. I have double checked my formulas and they are typed in correctly. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Your calculated variance is supposed to be different than Excel's VAR function. As it says in the lab, Excel calculates the VAR using a slightly different method. It's mostly a way to double-check. Lauren Biddle

Once we start sorting data beyond problem 8 our formulated answers will change to incorrect ones on our altered excel sheet. As long as our numerical answers are correct in our JES file will we receive full credit or do we need go back through each question and alter the formulas to make the answers "correct" after resorting?

I am mainly concerned with the correct numerical numbers on the Jes file, because you manipulate so much data that it changes your excel sheet every time. Kelly Farrell

When you sort the weight in problem 12, you are specifically told to do so without including the data columns that you have created. Forgetting to do this is probably what's causing your error. Lauren Biddle

On my scatter plot the x-axis has numbers 0, 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 representing the MPG groups. I have absolutely no idea where my computer came up with these numbers. I have tried changing spacing and everything but it still shows these same wrong numbers. How do I make it say 0-19, 20-29, 30-39, and 40-49, or should I even change this at all (i.e. will the x-axis's wrong labeling count against me in grading)?

On that same note, mine did it too, but it says 0, .5,1,1.5,2,2.5,3,3.5,4,4.5. But on my bar graph it is correct, 1000-1999... Whats up with this?

There seem to be several typos/conflicts on lab 3, and nobody is answering any of these questions. We're supposed to have started it, why is nobody helping?

I need some major help on how to write the Sumif and countif function to get the MPG ranges that are between numbers other than zero.

Look at the examples given for the formulas. Try copying those and then figuring out what numbers you need to change to get the numbers for the next groups. If you are still lost, go to the Help utility. It defines and tells you how to use all of the formulas. Lauren Biddle

When I try to sort the weight column for problem 12, it affects the cells that I worked with in problems 10 and 11. Why is that and how can I stop it. And when I sort the data for the weights should it be in ascending or descending order?

When you sort the weight in problem 12, you are specifically told to do so without including the data columns that you have created. As for what order to sort the data into, look at your "bins" or groups. Are those increasing or decreasing? Lauren Biddle

On problem 6, when I try to copy and paste the formula into the rest of the cells, it doesn't work. It is trying to copy and paste the value that I got in cell I2 instead of the formula...please help I'm really frustrated

Okay, I don't have Excel right in front of me (so this may be wrong) but I think I remember how I did it. You can't use the shortcut keys for that. You must click in the box with the formula that you want to copy. Then go to Edit -> Copy. Then highlight all of the cells that you want to paste into. Then go to Edit -> Paste. Lauren Biddle

I AM ABOUT DONE WITH THIS LAB BUT AFTER LOOKING OVER IT AGAIN I AM A LITTLE CONFUSED WITH THE OPENING INSTRUCTIONS. DO YOU WANT THE ENTIRE EXCEL PAGE TO SHOW ONLY TWO DECIMAL PLACES OR THE ENTIRE EXCEL SHEET? THANKS FOR THE HELP.

Format the MPG values in your spreadsheet so that two–and ONLY two– decimal places are displayed on the screen. Lauren Biddle

i am stuck on problem 11 .. my avg weight for the first group looks good (because we were given taht equation) but the other 3 are really really funky and are higher than the max weights.
my equation for the 2nd group weight avg is this

 =(SUMIF(C2:C328, "<30",G2:G328)-SUMIF(C2:C328, "<20",G2:G328)/COUNTIF(C2:C328,"<30")-COUNTIF(C2:C328,"<20"))

that doesn't seem like it would work mathematically but i dont know how to make it work. i guess i am inevitably asking for the answer but instead maybe someone could give me a hint ... lol

You are sooo close. Look at where your parantheses are and then try to think back to beginning Algebra...groupings...order of operations. Good catch of your error, though. Lauren Biddle

im having a problem making a scatter plot of the avg weight of mpg groups. my x values are 0,1,2,3,4,5. this was frustrating so then i made a line chart and the x values are perfectly labeled and it looks identical to the scatter plot minus the x values. will i get counted off for doing a line chart instead?

I'm having the same problem with mine labeling the x-axis wrong. I've tried most things through Excel to change it but they revert back to 0,2,4,6. Anyone know any way to fix this?

This came up in my thursday recitation and I did try to figure it out but for some reason the X-axis values just wouldn't take. I told my students to just go ahead with the lab and as long as they have the plot semi-close to what is expected no points would be deducted. I assume the other TA's will do the same. #25

I'm having a problem with #6. When I try to use a relative addressing, my excel prog is telling me that: Data on the Clipboard is not the same size and shape as the selected area. Do you want to paste the data anyway. I clicked yes. It doesn't work. I tried everything except shooting my computer.

When you are copying cells (or in this case functions) just try selecting a single cell to begin with. Select the cell that has the function. Then select copy. Then highlight a range of cells and then click paste. If this doesn't work shooting your computer might not be that bad an idea...just kidding :) #25

what are bins
whenever i sort number 12 my graph and everything changes, now i am stuck

Bins are just a made up idea. Think about when you do laundry. Most people sort their laundry into two piles (colors and whites). One could also sort their laundry based on color (a blue pile, a red pile, a green pile, a purple pile, etc). When we say sort the cars by their weight into bins we mean group them. A group for light cars (under 2000 pounds), a group for medium weighted cars ( 2000-2999 pounds), and groups for bigger cars (greater than 4000). Obviously for the labs the groups are different but I hope you get the idea. As for the graphs changing when you sort, take a look closely at what cells the graph is getting its data from. Technically graphs that take their data from a range of cells will not change even if you shift stuff around inside that range. #25

On question #5 for the average, when I put in the formula into H2 and press enter, no nuber value shows up. And For # 6 when I edit, cut, and paste the formula (G2-H2)^2 it shows up the same in all of the columns. It is not different like the example says it should be.

Check to make sure you have an equals sign before the formula. What exactly shows up in the cells after you paste that stuff in? The formula? Or the number 0? #25

On Question 12, are we supposed to sort in ascending or descending order so that 0-19 does actually match up with G2:G138, and so on...

(Answered anyway) You are suppose to sort in ascending order so that the lowest MPG is at G2. The ranges we gave you basically mean that when the cars are sorted by MPG, the car closest to 19 MPG without going over will be at G138. We just made your life easier because we sorted it already and wrote down the "breakpoints". #25

On problem #8, the lab says to calculate standard deviation into cell J2 and J3. Should I just do that, even though the acceleration data is in column J? or should I create a new column J?–

On problem #3, i keep getting a return of "0" in the empty cell block even though I know that is not the correct MODE. I have tried it many times. It will say a different number during the selection process, but 0 shows up in the cell. Please help!

Pick an empty cell. Type in that cell "=MODE(D2:D328)" without the quotes. Does that give you a number? If you are cutting and pasting trying typing it in manually. #25

Concerning the x-axis labeling, I don't feel the response really answered the question. I highlighted the MPG group cells and the AVG weight cells and went through the process of making a chart again, but the x-axis is labeled in increments of 0.5 with the maximum number being 4.5. I've tried manipulating the x-axis labeling, but I can't figure out how to set the intervals to the MPG group intervals. Please help

I too, like many others above, am having problems with the X axis of the scatter plot. Can someone please tell us why the values are not showing up properly?!? I am doing it exactly like I did the bar chart, which worked fine.

for problem 7 it says to type in =SUM(I2:I328)/327 for the first part. then it says for VAR for the 2nd part, to make sure youre finding the variance from column G. so which one are we supposed to find it of, I or G?

Make sure you did problem 6. Problem 6 basically tells you to fill in column I with (Weight-Average)^2. Because we did this all we have to do is add those values all up and divide by the number of cars. Hence SUM(I2:I328)/327. However, when using the built in function for variance, excel needs only the Weights because it can figure out everything else on it's own. #25

In problem 11, is that OK to use Average(Range of G culumn correspond to C culumn that is within our MPG groups)? or we have to use exactly the same procedure as the method explains.

I would try to stick to the formulas. This is because what happens when someone decides they want to add another car? The function SUMIF would automatically take it into account if the MPG was <20 say, but ranges that were selected by an absolute manner will have to be changed. In other words, stick to the procedure outlined and things will be better :) #25

For problem 12, I ended up copying and pasting the original data into a separate worksheet and sorting it by MPG there, since the data in the new columns would get messed up and because the program also wouldn't let me select columns that were not next to each other. Is this ok?

If there is no way around this I would definitely make a note of this to your TA. Your TA will be the one grading this assignment and if he or she can't find the values then that would be bad. #25

To just sort the original data you would highlight all the rows and columns that are associated with each other. Hence you have this one big rectangular block. Then go to Data–>Sort. There is an option called "Sort by". That is the key you want to sort by. #25

For Problem 7, the variance that Excel is getting is different from what I am getting. I know that they are not supposed to be the same, but the answers that I am getting are way off. These are the for formuals:

VAR(G2:G328) = 740779.7375

If you do the lab quickly you'll miss over the fact that in Problem 6 (and others) it makes you do something incorrectly first and then shows you how to correct it. I think your problem may be the difference between absolute and relative cell addressing. Basically your formulas down in the I column should be something like =(G2-$H$2)^2, =(G3-$H$2)^2, =(G4-$H$2)^2, etc. Notice the G's change but the H2 cell remains the same. #25

For problem 11, I cannot get the correct answers. I have found the correct values, just by doing it by hand and they are different from the formulas that I am using. Strangely enough, I have the first and second groups correct, whether by fluke or not, but the third and fourth groups are showing incorrect. The formulas are as follows:

To sort ONLY the original data, highlight it by dragging your mouse across the orginal columns, then go to Data, Sort, etc...

The only problem with that is you have new columns in between the orginal columns, so you can't sort it.

One way to get around this is to hide the columns that have the new data. To do this click on the Column Heading (like H or I). Then right click and select "Hide". Now you can select the columns you need to sort. After you are done sorting you can unhide them by selecting cells in the column to the left and in the column to the right of the hidden columns. Right click and select "Unhide". #25

When you check the turnin verification page, is it there? There might be a problem turning in your presentation if it's a big file. Make sure your picture is either .gif or .jpg format. .bmp pictures are really big and there might be a problem turning in a powerpoint file if it is really big. How do I draw my own picture in powerpoint? The directions given on coweb aren't specific enough?

When you go to View -> Toolbars and select Drawing, the toolbar appears on the bottom of the powerpoint presention. If you want to make a rectangle, click on the rectangle button. My turnin isn't working either?!

There is no size limit on files for Coweb Turnin. If you are trying to submit without an open, named, (saved), blank file, then nothing is going to happen. You will push submit, it won't give you an error message, but it won't show up on the turnin page. This error is fixed in the updated JES - it tells you if you are trying to turn in a blank file. So you need to open JES, go to "save", name your file "lab4.py", and save it. Then go to turnin, attach your powerpoint file, add TA comments, and then press submit. I hope that clears everything up! Lauren Biddle

how to move a drawn object in a slide to make animation out of it. Let's say I have drawn one circle and one rectangle I want to use animation to make them moving toward each other in the slide. How can I do this. Thanx for your help

Ok, here's how you would do it. Draw the combination of circle and rectangle on the slide like how you would want it at the end (final image). Select one of the shapes and go to Slide Show -> Custom animation. Check the objects you would like to animate in the upper left. Under the order & timing tab, you can change the animation order to whatever you want. You can also time the object by clicking on the Automatically button and specifying the number of seconds. Under the effects tab, you can specify the type of animation and the direction where you want it to come from. Hope this helps. Angela Liang

If you're trying to put a picture that's in the same folder as your html file, try this:

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I think I need to see it to know what you're talking about. You can put your image tag at the end of your paragraph if you don't want it to interrupt the paragraph. If you want it on the next line, you can use <BR> before and after your paragraph. Angela Liang

I finaly got my pictures to show up, turns out the .JPG is case sensitive on the Coweb, but not on my computer!!! Anyway, Now I have like 6 versions of lab5 (eg: lab5a lab5b lab5final lab5correct)etc. I understand that I can't take them off, so is it o.k. if our file is named something else, like lab5correct? It is the only refernced link on my Co-web page so it shouldn't be too confusing.

You can upload multiple versions of lab5.html on the coweb. The coweb will automatically overwrite the last version of the file. Make sure it's named correctly because that's probably going to be worth some points on the grading criteria. Angela Liang

I cannot move my files into my public_html folder. i keep getting an error. It says that the copying has failed for each of my files. I tried to recreate the public_html floder, and it won't let me do that either. what am i supposed to do?
at one point a few years ago, i had to create a webpage using dreamweaver and I had the folder created for that. I deleted all the files in the pulbic_html folder that were for that old webpage and now it won';t let me use the folder anymore.

What are your permissions for that folder? Make sure it's not read-only. The folder needs to have read, write, and execute permissions for the owner. After you set your permissions for your folder, you should be able to copy files into the folder. Angela Liang

If you are doing your webpage directly on your Who's Who page, you need to upload your picture to the coweb, then use img src="http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu:8888/uploads/cs1315/672/thenameofyourpicture.jpg" Laura Parker

Take out all the http:// stuff. Just make it <img src = "picture.gif"> and as long as you have your images uploaded to the coweb, it should work. Angela Liang

I have a question about editting my page. I put my page up on prism and it's fine and has all the requirements but I want to add some other stuff. I use WinSCP to and edit my Lab5.html. When I double click to check it comes us with the C://My Documents blah blah stuff as the address and it's right, but when I view my page from www.prism.gatech.edu...blah it is still my old page. How do I make the changes show up on my actual prism page?

You need to upload your changes to your prism account. You should probably change it on your desktop and then upload your file when you're happy with your changes. Unless you know what you're doing with WinSCP, I wouldn't recommend using it to edit. It'll get pretty confusing. Angela Liang

What if our webpage has everything it is supposed to and all the links work, but maybe our code isn't perfect- just good enough so the system figured it out. For example if I started a paragraph but didn't end it before begining another one- but it looks fine on the webpage. Is this okay; will we be counted off for small errors like those?

It might look good to you, but it might look different to us. We're allowed to use any brower to grade this assignment. If your HTML page does not show up because we use a difference browser than you, and you get a zero, it is not our fault. You can risk it or do it correctly. i have my images uploaded to the web and the img src=picture.jpg stuff works on my html page but then it just shows up as a box whenever i upload the html page....the link still works but i just cant get the dumb image to show up for the life of me??????????

Are you doing it on prism or on the coweb? The only thing I can say is to check your spelling and make sure it's uploaded corrected. Also, the coweb is case-sensitive so make sure your case is correct. Angela Liang

Not really. Usually, if a person can see the image, they can save it to disk one way or another. There's a couple of ways that you can stop the "less knowledgable" user to save it. One way is to make right clicking on the image pop up a dialog box instead of giving you the save option. I don't really know how to do that off the top of my head but I've seen it done. I am having the same problem with the prism as earlier folks. I did everything as the instruction page told me to do, setting the permissions and everything. Well after setting teh permissions on my public_html directory, and double clicking it to set the permissions on the actual files, it said that permission was denied. So I cant get in to edit the files int eh folder and my web page wont coem up when I type in my ~gtg... thing.

I got my friend to take a picture of me with a digital camera and then he emailed it to me, but the file is an html file, is there any way i can make it a ".jpg" file?

even when i right click on the picture and save it as a .jpg file, it wont show up in my lab5.html, it just shows the box with an "x" in the upper left hand corner. I've also tried opening it and then saving as a .jpg and then it wont let me open it, it says file cannot be opened and then shows image expert example pictures

make sure you're cap lock isn't on. Just keep trying. If it doesn't work from your computer, try another one. Angela Liang

I have my page posted to coweb and prism. All of my pictures work fom my html file on my computer and on prism, but on the coweb link two of my pictures show up as boxes with red x's in them. Any ideas on why the pictures don't work just on coweb and will my grade be affected?

Well, depending on which one your TA grade, your grade might be affected. What type of pictures are you trying to upload? Only upload jpgs and gifs. And check the case because the coweb is case-sensitive. Angela Liang

Some of my images are not jpeg. they are gif and bitmap images. so should i just type gif instead of jpg or is there a way to change the way the file. Thanks

Leave them as gif or jpg. The coweb will take those formats. Do not upload bitmaps. They're really large images and the coweb might not let you upload it Angela Liang
