The Women @ CC would like to help make exam week a little sweeter by
offering a COOKIE BREAK Tuesday, December 9 from 2:00pm - 3:00pm outside
CCB107. All grad and undergrad students in Computing classes are welcome
to cookies.

Happy studying and see you at the Cookie Break!9)

December 8

All grades (except the final) are up! Contact your TA or me by midnight tonight if you have any grading issues involving hw4, hw5 and/or hw6. Angela Liang

If you're satisfy with your Lab 5 grade, you may modify your webpage. If you still have grading issues about your page, please wait until it has been resolved. Angela Liang

December 7

We have one Quiz 3 with no name on it!

If you have a zero but you took Quiz 3, contact your TA to see if she or he has it, and/or contact me to claim the missing quiz.

December 4

Please don't forget photo ID for your final exam!

Buzz card or drivers' license, just something to prove you are who you are. Thanks!

December 3

Please, PLEASE, go do the CIOS survey at http://www.coursesurvey.gatech.edu/! We especially need feedback on new courses – to fix things going wrong, and to get data of what's going right. Let us know what you think of CS1315! Mark Guzdial

There will be recitation this week and the main topic is the final exam review. Please bring questions. This is also a good chance to see your TA if you have any grading issues. Angela Liang

December 2

All grading issues must be resolved by MONDAY DECEMBER 8 AT NOON. There's literally no time left after that to get the grading done and get all grades done. If you have concerns, talk to your TA or me before then. Mark Guzdial

No Free Pizza, Just for Science sake

We are a group of graduate students in a software engineering
class doing
a brief study on how people reason in computer science problem solving.
We are looking for a few kind individuals who would like to offer a small
piece of their time to further our research. The study will involve some
simple learning and problem solving with pencil and paper problems; we
are interested in you (students in Media Computation) because you have
gained some experience in programming through the class but haven’t
received formal education on the topics addressed in our study.
The time commitment would be a single session of about an hour,
some time
later this week. We hope to use the results of this research to better
understand how students new to computer science solve and reason about
algorithmic problems. We are very flexible on the timing, but would like
to do the experiments this week.

If you are interested in participating in this study or if you have any
comments questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at this
email at jensen@cc.gatech.edu

When Emailing please place the following in the Subject line: Participants
for CS 8030 Study.

Please provide us with your name and email address and your availability
on Thursday, November 13th & Friday, November 14th.

We will be waiting for you after class on Wednesday, November 12th with
your Participation Time Slot and to have you fill out a quick survey.

We look forward to working with you and we thank you for your time and
consideration.

Sincerely,

CS8030 Software Engineering Seminar
Christina Gardner, Peter Jensen, Peter Dillinger, Venkatasubraman
Ramachandran

Fine print: We have obtained IRB approval for this study through our
instructor, Mike McCracken, and Dr. Guzdial has kindly allowed us to beg
you for your participation. There is a consent form that we will provide
for you; basically it indicates that there is no compensation for
participation in this study and that the risks involved are no worse than
normal participation in a class. We would like to videotape your paper as
you solve the problems and then ask you a few questions about your
problem-solving process; the tapes will be destroyed before the end of the
semester and your privacy is of the utmost concern for us.

November 10

I will not have office hours or be available at recitation this Wednesday, as I am taking my qualifying exam all day that day. I will also be a little slow in responding to e-mail until Thursday. Stephen Voida

November 8

Mark Guzdial will not have office hours Monday morning – I have an all day Ph.D. student review in the College of Computing. I will have office hours Tuesday, and I can make appointments as always.

We will post AFTER lab 5 when you can start modifying your pages. The idea is that your web pages should be touched BETWEEN the time of COMPLETING Lab 5 and of GRADING Lab 5. After the due date/time, leave them alone until we can grade them, then we'll let you know that you can update them and play some more. Mark Guzdial

The College of Computing will be accepting applications for undergraduates who wish to serve as TA's for the following Spring 2004 courses:

CS 1050, 1315, 1321, 1322, 1371, 2130, 2200, 2335 & 2340

Positions will be available for pay and for credit.

Ideal candidates will be juniors and seniors in good academic standing and have an A or B in the course you want to TA for.

Please join us at an information session to learn more about being an Undergraduate TA in the College of Computing on

Monday, November 10th at 6 PM
Physics L5

Applications will be accepted from November 10 - November 19. To apply, please visit
http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~TA-app

November 6

I will not be able to have office hours tomorrow morning. Send me an email if you need to meet with me. Laura Parker

I'm moving my office hours permanetly to DMSmith 204. It is an easier place for me to do work while I wait! From now on, look for me there. Kelly Farrell

I'm moving my office hours today to 12:30-1:30 in the CoC. Angela Liang

November 5

Unable to make office hours today. Please e-mail me or IM me if you need me. #25

November 4

Change of LOCATION for my office hours TODAY: I will be in the DM Smith computer lab (DM Smith Building across from the library, room 204). You usually need your buzzcard to get in but if you don't have it, just knock. I will probably be the only person in there. This is just for TODAY ONLY! Thanks. Kelly Farrell

October 30

If you have friends who are registering for CS1315 and are asking what's going on, here's what you can tell them:

Hope this helps! Mark Guzdial

October 28

I really, Really, REALLY encourage you to go to recitation this week!
Mark Guzdial

The Grading Policy page has been updated with details on how bad turnins will be handled. This will be the policy for the rest of the term.

October 27

Ditto on Summer's announcement. E-mail me if you need anything, otherwise see you Thursday! Kelly Farrell

October 22

Take a break!

No recitation this week.

October 21

DO NOT FORGET YOUR BUZZCARD FOR THE MIDTERM WEDNESDAY!

October 20

While student athletes at Georgia Tech are permitted to make up missed work, the responsibility for making up that work resides with the student. I have not received any requests for early midterms nor make-up midterms, even though I have just been informed that at least seven students will be missing Wednesday's midterm. It is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor and arrange for make-up work. As of right now, no one is getting an early or make-up midterm. Mark Guzdial

October 17

I added some additional problems to the Fall2003 Midterm Review 2 to provide a few problems that are easier to get started with.

Since my office is now in a building that doesn't have such high security (just flash your Buzz card), I'll hold all my office hours there. Technology Square Research Building Room 341. Mark Guzdial

October 16

Textbook Chapters now has the debugging, design, and text chapters – all the content through Midterm 2 is now available for the text. Sore Fingered Mark

October 15

My email address has changed... I am no longer at gtg420a@mail.gatech.edu I am now at lo25@mail.gatech.edu. If you sent me an email on or after 10.10.2003 you need to resend it. Larry Olson

There is a new JES Update at Course Software (JES) that makes Windows Sound Recorder work with JES!. Load this update, and you can use sounds in HW3 that you recorded with Windows' Sound Recorder.

October 14

I will hold my office hours this week on Friday from 10am-11am
instead of Thursday. Haile Seifu

October 14

Fall2003 Midterm Review 2 is now available.

October 8

If your turnin goes away without a success or failure message, you didn't have a file open in the main menu. The problem has been fixed in the updated version of JES. If you don't want to install the updated version, make sure there is a file open in the editor area when you turn in. Angela Liang

I will not be holding office hours tomorrow, Oct 9. I will be available by email if you have any questions. Angela Liang

October 4

During the move on October 13, the CoWeb will NOT be available. It will be shut down early on Monday October 13 and will probably be back up by the morning of Tuesday October 14. Mark Guzdial

October 2

Folks, I'm getting moved from CRB to TSRB (directly above the ice cream store and Moe's!) on Oct. 10. I have to box up my office and lab next week. For Oct. 6 and 7 (Monday and Tuesday), I'm going to hold office hours in my office so that I can be boxing when I'm not visiting with y'all. Thanks! Mark Guzdial

October 1

Because of interviews I have shifted my office hours for tomorrow(October 2nd) to 5-6pm in the CoC.
Students in my section who have any problems with hw or take-home exam please feel free to email me with questions.
Ali Kamil

October 1

I am holding limited office hours this week (2-3 and 4-5 today) and will not be at recitation this evening due to a paper deadline and a cold that I don't want to be spreading around. Students in my section should still feel free to email me with questions, and should be able to attend recitation with Brittany at the usual place and time, or, failing that, one of the other sections' recitations. Stephen Voida

September 30

There is now an update available for JES. It fixes some issues with pictures, sound indexing, and turnin. This update is OPTIONAL for now, but you'll probably need it when we get to movies in the class. Adam Wilson
You'll also need it for Homework #4 – it makes makeEmptyPicture work well. Mark Guzdial

September 29

#25 will not be holding office hours this wednesday, october 1st. Please e-mail me instead for an appointment :)

September 26

Mark Guzdial will not be holding office hours on Monday Sept. 29. I have to attend a Dean's Meeting (to talk about this class, for one). Colin Potts will be doing the lectures Monday afternoon – he's the one who took the jellyfish picture shown in class (today). I will be holding office hours on Tuesday afternoon Sept. 30.

The first Take Home Exam 1 is now available (see the Hotspots), and you can ask questions on the Fall 2003 Take Home Exam 1 Questions Page. It is due next Friday October 3.

Today is Last Day to Withdraw from Classes ("Drop Day"). If you are considering dropping CS1315, you should know that next semester, we will be having far fewer TA's. (Possibly 1 TA per lecture section of 150.) There will be fewer people to ask questions of next term.

September 24

I'm holding an additional hour of office hours from 2:00-3:00 today on the 2nd floor of the Student Center (co-located with Brittany's office hours). If people actually show up, this will become a regular office hours time. Stephen Voida

It is a good thing Steve will be there today, because I am sick. Therefore, I will not be holding office hours today. Sorry for the late notice. Brittany Selden

Sorry for the late notice, but I will not be holding office hours today. I'll see you tonight if you need help. Keith McDermott

September 21

My office hours for Monday Sept. 22 will be in my office (289 CRB – see my CoWeb page for directions) rather than in the CyberCafe. Folks visiting me tomorrow will want their midterm exams, I imagine, and I don't want to haul 200 midterms to CyberCafe and back.

I'm starting to use IM to make it easier to reach me. My AOL screen name is mjguzdial. I'll try to keep the AOL IM client running when I'm available.

I will be bringing the midterms to both the 1 pm and 3 pm lectures. Mark Guzdial

I will not be holding office hours tomorrow (Tuesday the 23) because I have a filed trip for another class. E-mail me if you need to set up an appointment. Summer McWilliams

September 19

My office hours ONLY for this coming Tuesday will be in the same
place, but at 12:30-1:30pm. Haile Seifu

September 19

See Textbook Chapters for more and revised chapters of the book.

Feel free to sign your name to your picture in the Fall2003 HW2 Collages. Some of those collages are so gorgeous, you might want to put your name up there and take credit for them.

Midterm grades are now available in WebWork. Average overall for the midterm is 81.2%

For each problem:
P160%
P286%
P378%
P484%
P558%

Here's the overall grade distribution

Uploaded Image: midterm1-grade-distribution.jpg

September 17

The location of my office hours has changed to the student center couches area. Same time, same days. Kelly Farrell

The points allocated to the midterm problems will be different than what was on your midterm. Because there were problems with some students completing the exam, we have decreased the final problem from 20 points to 10 points, and distributed the 10 points among the first four problems.

We'll be doing grading all day Friday, so your midterm grades should be available by Monday. Mark Guzdial

September 15

DO BRING YOUR BUZZ CARDS TO THE MIDTERM! You must have your buzz card to turn in your exam. Mark Guzdial

September 12

Homework #2 definition has been changed slightly. You can mirror in any direction you want and put the images wherever you want – it doesn't have to be images on the left and mirror from left-to-right (though that's perfectly acceptable to do.) Be creative! Mark Guzdial

There will be a midterm review session on Monday, September 15 from 6-7pm in CoC Room 16 (Basement level of the College of Computing). The session will be motivated by questions so please bring questions! Angela Liang

September 11

I was not able to make it to office hours today. I will be holding additional office hours tomorrow (Friday 9/12) from 12-1 in the library computer cluster (front room first floor) for anyone who needs help. Also, please email me if you have any questions! Kelly Farrell

September 9th

Folks, TAs are instructed not to accept any turnins after HW1 via email. That means that if you don't get Lab3 (and beyond) turned in via JES, it won't be accepted for credit. Suggestion: GO TO RECITATION AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO THE JES TURNIN! Mark Guzdial

Due to several requests from students, from now on my office hours will be from 2:00-3:00 on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Student Center on the 2nd floor outside of the computer cluster. Brittany Selden

This week's recitation will be over Lab 3 and Fall2003 Midterm Review 1. Please look over the review and bring questions. Angela Liang

I missed my office hours today, so sorry to any students that stopped
by. Please email me at gt4680b@mail.gatech.edu if you have any questions or need to meet with me before my Thursday office hours.
Haile Seifu

September 8th

I have shifted my office hours for this tuesday September 9th to wednesday 10-11. This change is only for this week
Ali Kamil

September 7

I have changed my office hours. You can see the new ones at http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/cs1315/44.
Keith McDermott

September 6

Students are required, as part of the Student Computer Ownership requirement, to have Microsoft Office. See http://www.sco.gatech.edu/req_soft.html. Mark Guzdial

ON QUIZZES AND PRE-QUIZZES!

September 5

Some students have a new TA. Please check the Class Roll to see if your TA has changed. Angela Liang

September 2

I don't believe that any clusters have JES installed, but you can always install it yourself (it's pretty easy to install).

Also, machines in French and Rich (and maybe Student Center) will soon (or already have?) cameras on them especially for this class so that you can make pictures for use in your collages, animations, and other homework. Mark Guzdial

My office hours will be a little different tomorrow, Wed 9/3. Rather than from 11-12 in the Student Center, they will be from 2-3 at the same place. Sorry for the inconvenience! Brittany Selden

For those who still can't get JES to turn in:
The two things we've found key in making it work for most people are:

The LoMem version (JES-console-lomem.zip) has been made easier to install, if you had troubles earlier.

September 1

August 27

The problem with new Macs not running JES and getting the java/lang/CharSeq error
comes from the version of JAVA they are running. All new Macs come bundled
with JAVA 1.3.X (1?). We need them to have JAVA 1.4.1. That means they
need to run software update a bunch of times till the JAVA one pops up ...
To check java version number on a Mac a student needs to type in
"java -version" at the terminal prompt.

August 26

LAB 2 TURNIN IS NOW OPEN!

Go ahead and turn it in.

August 25

There is a user study in need of volunteer subjects – no relation to this class, I won't know if you're participating or not, and no extra credit is involved. I was asked to pass on this note: Our study involves testing users' memories of different style interfaces
and participants receive $10 compensation for approximately 45 minutes of their time. Additional information about the study along with directions on how to sign up are located on our study CoWeb:
http://swiki.cc.gatech.edu:8080/GlanceStudy

You won't be able to turn in Lab 2 yet!

Give us a day to finally get all the TA's into the system, and we'll post here when it's clear to turn in Lab 2's. Thanks!
