No Free Pizza, Just for Science sake

We are a group of graduate students in a software engineering
class doing
a brief study on how people reason in computer science problem solving.
We are looking for a few kind individuals who would like to offer a small
piece of their time to further our research. The study will involve some
simple learning and problem solving with pencil and paper problems; we
are interested in you (students in Media Computation) because you have
gained some experience in programming through the class but haven’t
received formal education on the topics addressed in our study.
The time commitment would be a single session of about an hour,
some time
later this week. We hope to use the results of this research to better
understand how students new to computer science solve and reason about
algorithmic problems. We are very flexible on the timing, but would like
to do the experiments this week.

Fine print: We have obtained IRB approval for this study through our
instructor, Mike McCracken, and Dr. Guzdial has kindly allowed us to beg
you for your participation. There is a consent form that we will provide
for you; basically it indicates that there is no compensation for
participation in this study and that the risks involved are no worse than
normal participation in a class. We would like to videotape your paper as
you solve the problems and then ask you a few questions about your
problem-solving process; the tapes will be destroyed before the end of the
semester and your privacy is of the utmost concern for us.

Mark Guzdial will not have office hours Monday morning – I have an all day Ph.D. student review in the College of Computing. I will have office hours Tuesday, and I can make appointments as always.

We will post AFTER lab 5 when you can start modifying your pages. The idea is that your web pages should be touched BETWEEN the time of COMPLETING Lab 5 and of GRADING Lab 5. After the due date/time, leave them alone until we can grade them, then we'll let you know that you can update them and play some more. Mark Guzdial

If you have friends who are registering for CS1315 and are asking what's going on, here's what you can tell them:

CS1315 is moving to a new structure, in part because of the budget crunch. There will be two required lectures in a large lecture hall, and a third required "small lecture" hour (plus 30 minutes Q&A) with only 50 students with an instructor or faculty member.
The two lecturers next term will be Colin Potts and Blair MacIntyre. Both volunteered to teach CS1315 and are really excited about it.
I will be leading three of the "small lecture" sessions. I don't know which ones yet.
I will also still be the "course administrator," e.g., I make up assignments, exams, grading criteria, lecture slides, plans for the "small lecture" sessions, etc.

I really, Really, REALLY encourage you to go to recitation this week!

They'll discuss HW4 and how to do it, especially how to scale.
They'll discuss how to update your JES for the latest features.
They'll discuss Problem 2 on the Midterm. You may need to know how to do that for the final (which WILL be cumulative!).

While student athletes at Georgia Tech are permitted to make up missed work, the responsibility for making up that work resides with the student. I have not received any requests for early midterms nor make-up midterms, even though I have just been informed that at least seven students will be missing Wednesday's midterm. It is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor and arrange for make-up work. As of right now, no one is getting an early or make-up midterm. Mark Guzdial

There is a new JES Update at Course Software (JES) that makes Windows Sound Recorder work with JES!. Load this update, and you can use sounds in HW3 that you recorded with Windows' Sound Recorder.

There is now an update available for JES. It fixes some issues with pictures, sound indexing, and turnin. This update is OPTIONAL for now, but you'll probably need it when we get to movies in the class. Adam Wilson

Mark Guzdial will not be holding office hours on Monday Sept. 29. I have to attend a Dean's Meeting (to talk about this class, for one). The first Take Home Exam 1 is now available (see the Hotspots), and you can ask questions on the Fall 2003 Take Home Exam 1 Questions Page. It is due next Friday October 3.

Today is Last Day to Withdraw from Classes ("Drop Day"). If you are considering dropping CS1315, you should know that next semester, we will be having far fewer TA's. (Possibly 1 TA per lecture section of 150.) There will be fewer people to ask questions of next term.

The points allocated to the midterm problems will be different than what was on your midterm. Because there were problems with some students completing the exam, we have decreased the final problem from 20 points to 10 points, and distributed the 10 points among the first four problems.

We'll be doing grading all day Friday, so your midterm grades should be available by Monday. Mark Guzdial

Homework #2 definition has been changed slightly. You can mirror in any direction you want and put the images wherever you want – it doesn't have to be images on the left and mirror from left-to-right (though that's perfectly acceptable to do.) Be creative! Mark Guzdial

The quiz will be in the FIRST 15 MINUTES OF CLASS WEDNESDAY! Come late and you miss it.

I don't believe that any clusters have JES installed, but you can always install it yourself (it's pretty easy to install).

Also, machines in French and Rich (and maybe Student Center) will soon (or already have?) cameras on them especially for this class so that you can make pictures for use in your collages, animations, and other homework. Mark Guzdial

For those who still can't get JES to turn in:
The two things we've found key in making it work for most people are:

(a) There must be a file loaded into JES. The Program Area can't be blank.
(b) Make sure that it's your gt Prism username, not your gtID, in the Register screen

The LoMem version (JES-console-lomem.zip) has been made easier to install, if you had troubles earlier.

CS1315 (Wed. recitation) that was scheduled for Room 215 will now be in Room 217 from now on (Larry and Laura's sections). This move is to resolve the conflict with CS1322.

Larry Olson figure out the problem that new Macs are having with JES!

The problem with new Macs not running JES and getting the java/lang/CharSeq error
comes from the version of JAVA they are running. All new Macs come bundled
with JAVA 1.3.X (1?). We need them to have JAVA 1.4.1. That means they
need to run software update a bunch of times till the JAVA one pops up ...
To check java version number on a Mac a student needs to type in
"java -version" at the terminal prompt.

Lab 1 grades for my section are posted. I did these early so that you can check them and make sure things are right (and learn how to use webworks). If you have a 0 for "not recieved", and you DID turn in your assignment, please email me. See you tomorrow in recitation! Kelly Farrell

LAB 2 TURNIN IS NOW OPEN!

Go ahead and turn it in.

Find out who your TA is at TA-Student Pairings. This is the person who will be grading your labs, quizzes, homework, and take-home exams, and has primary responsibility for your questions and concerns. Your TA will also be one of your two (or three) Recitation TA's.

If you are having problems with JES running very slowly or taking a LONG time to start up, you might not have enough memory inside your compter. If you have 256 Megabytes of memory or less, you might want to try to download this low memory version of JES: JES-console-lomem.zip. Just unzip the file inside your JES directory (download it and double-click on it, then place the file in there next to your JES.exe and JES-console.exe files), and double click it to start JES. There is a user study in need of volunteer subjects – no relation to this class, I won't know if you're participating or not, and no extra credit is involved. I was asked to pass on this note: Our study involves testing users' memories of different style interfaces
and participants receive $10 compensation for approximately 45 minutes of their time. Additional information about the study along with directions on how to sign up are located on our study CoWeb:
