Final Exam Review Spring 2003: Network Ideas

Questions, answers, comments?

(Back to Sp2003 Final Exam Review)

1. An IP address is 32 bits wide and is composed of a network number and a host number. The hosts are connected by one or REMOVED networks and the IP address identifies each individual machine. Valid IP addresses range from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255.
2. The internet is a gigantic collection of millions of computers all linked together on a network which allows communication between all computers. Internet service providers (ISP's) provide the connection between all of these machines.
3. HyperText links all the resources of the internet together. It is a link that, when clicked, reroutes you to a pre-specified website.
4. HTTP = HyperText Transfer Protocol. This appears before the www. in a web address (URL) in the window at the top of your screen. Kelly Farrell

The Internet existed before ISP's. How is it that they all interconnect? HyperText also existed long before the Web. Mark Guzdial

Also, number 4 isn't defining a protocol. HTTP, FTP, and MAILTO are all protocols. Mark Guzdial

So even though there was internet befor ISP's and HyperText arn't those answers still correct? I think I am just a little confused.

A protocol is a standard procedure for regulating data transmission between computers, and it appears at the beginning of a URL.

If HyperText existed before the Internet, then how can the definition "links all the resources of the Internet together" be right? To call a protocol a "procedure" is okay, but REMOVED, it's an agreement – what's going to be said by each side. Mark Guzdial

hypertext was invented to facilitate non-linear reading. like read part of the document, click, read another one.

Hypertext IS non-linear text. Mark Guzdial

omg ok bijal here it is:

1.IP address: is essentially 4 numbers, seperated by periods, and the numbers are between 0 and 255.... also prof guzdial said something about converting 32 bit number to something i dont remember... yeah

2. the Internet: network of networks formed by sets of protocols

3. HyperText: non-linear text [linear would be like a book], the web is an example of hypertext.

4. protocol: agreement on how 2 computers communicate. "like a hand shake" i dont know where it appears in a URL, i guess its the "http://" part but i dont know for sure..
Whitney Watts

1. SQL is a standardized query language for REMOVEDing information from a database. It enables several users on a local-area network to access the same database simultaneously.
2. A global network connecting millions of computers.
3. A special type of database system in which objects (text, pictures, music, programs, and so on) can be linked to each other.
Hypertext systems are useful for organizing and browsing through large databases.
4. An agreed-upon format for transmitting data between two devices. your computer or device must support the right ones if you want to communicate with other computers. The protocol can be implemented either in hardware or in software.

Whitney and Bijal, very nice answers. Bijal, you are right that hypertexts are often a kind of database. But I think that your answer about SQL is from another page? :-) Mark Guzdial

Yes...I know the answer is in the slides but i just couldn't seem to find it late last night, so i just looked it up incase no one had posted on it.

I just realized that I posted on the wrong REMOVED.. my bad...
