Spectrum webmail is an acceptable way to receive email. There were some confusion among TAs (read below). Angela Liang
Do your lab, as much as possible, on a friend's machine or on a lab machine. When your TA sends you an email introducing him/herself, let them know the situation and explain that you couldn't do all of it, e.g., install the antivirus software. Mark Guzdial
| Your email is coming from somewhere. When you go to your account, do you sign in somewhere? Where did you type in your Ga Tech account password when you set up your computer? Are you using Spectrum's Webmail? If so, that doesn't fulfill the assignment. | |
Spectrum Webmail is an acceptable way to read email. There were some confusion among TAs since we did not accept this answer last semester. Sorry for the confusion. Angela Liang
I couldn't find anything out with just that information. If you still can't get it to work, please email me with your operating system, your exact problem (error message), and any other relevant information. gte613z@mail.gatech.edu
The Georgia Tech computer ownership policy states that you must have a computer with Internet access. We're supposed to expect that of you. If you can't get Internet access off-campus, I suggest you drop the class – you'd be at way too much of a disadvantage. Mark Guzdial
Georgia Tech has a set of programs and configurations that they support. Unfortunately, Windows Me is not supported by OIT, so there is no licensed downloadable software for it. The list of supported hardware and software, as well as Internet connectivity policy, is available at the Student Computer Ownership site. If you are not operating to the specifications of this list, chances are that the antivirus software and the firewall from OIT will not work for you.
There is probably nothing wrong. It just takes a while to complete the system scan. It is checking all the files and folders on your computer to ensure you are not infected with a virus.
Is there a menu item that says to send messages? Mark Guzdial
Zeb, to whom are you trying to send the message? I assure you that my Inbox is working way too well! (I could only wish that it would fill up and not accept anymore!) Mark Guzdial
You'll know who your TA is once the class roll is set (which will be sometime next week). If you have a situation with your computer, indicate that in your writeup and do your lab as much as possible. Lab 1 is still due on Friday. Angela Liang
I don't know which mail program you are using. But for each program, you are providing the email address. To change it to the correct email: Outlook- put address in "Email Address" box in the Internet Accounts window. Eudora- put address in the "Return Address" box when you are in the Options window. Mac Mail- put address in the "Email Address" box in the Mail Preferences window. This is the same type of process for any other mail program.
Your GT email and prism account are the same thing. The lab says that you have to use another email client, such as Outlook, to check this GT account. You can choose which client you like best. Use the instructions of Lab 1, part B for configuring this client. If this doesn't answer your question, feel free to post again! Also, when you ask questions, if you would like to sign your name you can put it in stars, which link it to your who's who page. Kelly Farrell
It is acceptable to use Spectrum Webmail (webmail.mail.gatech.edu) to do this assignment. Sorry for the confusion. But it is possible to change your email address on the Webmail site. Go to Options -> Personal Information -> Edit Your Identities. Fill in your address (gtxxxxx@prism.gatech.edu) in the boxes that say: "Your From Address" and "Your Reply To Address". Lauren Biddle
Download the Win 95/98 version of the software (if there is one). Win ME was very similar to 95/98. You should consider getting an updated operating system – ME is pretty old, and was never very stable. (Notice how long it remained on the market...) Mark Guzdial
Somebody probably accidentally deleted it when they put their own name in. Please do add it back. Mark Guzdial
There are two really common problems. The first is that the picture must be either a .jpg file or a .gif file. The second is that the file name cannot have any spaces in it, i.e. Ashley pic.jpg will not work. If that is your problem, just rename your file so that it has no spaces and upload it again. Lauren Biddle
There are Help directions, both on the OIT website and on the ZoneAlarm website about how to configure your firewall correctly so that it protects you without being an inconvenience. A firewall is an almost vital security to have. Please don't get frustrated and give up on this. It's really for your own protection. If you need more exact directions on how configure this, please email me (Lauren Biddle) at gte613z@prism.gatech.edu
We're not using webct; we're using webwork (www.webwork.cc.gatech.edu). They're complete different. If you registered before Tuesday, you should be able to log onto webwork. If you have never been to webwork, you need to setup your account before you log in. For people who registered after Tuesday, you should have access by Monday, Aug. 25. Angela Liang
I think Norton's is just fine. Just email turnin for this lab. Mark Guzdial
No, it's probably that the server is acting up. All the mail servers I use are terribly slow tonight, probably because of the SoBig.F virus. (I had 160+ virus-infected emails just tonight! Mark Guzdial
This may not be it, but sometimes when you try to save on the CoWeb at the same time as someone else you conflict each other. Maybe everyone was hard at work on their Lab 1 when you tried to save. Lauren Biddle
Nope, it's working fine for me and it looks like we've been receiving emails all night. Please sign your name when posting a question on the coweb. For certain problems, we can email you for clarification if we know who's asking the question. Angela Liang
check your smtp server. If you're off campus and using an ISP, then your smtp server might be different. Angela Liang
You can make an appointment with a TA to get help. Also, in recitation (which begins tomorrow) we will be taking questions and going over JES installation. Lauren Biddle
The way JES works is that it looks to see if you have Java on your computer already. If so, it uses that. If not, it uses the Java that we provide on the CD. If your Java is too old, it will try to use that...but will fail. You'll need to install a new Java Runtime (JRE) from http://www.java.sun.com. Mark Guzdial
