Spring 2006 Lab 1 Questions

Add your question below. The TAs will be checking periodically and answering questions. If you think you know the answer to one of the questions, feel free to answer it.

When you go to the "Who's Who" webpage, there is no text field at the bottom of the page where you can add your name. Or, at least, I don't see it. Am i blind? Please help! Reply to: chanee at gatech.edu
Fixed. -Albert d'Heurle

ON the OIT Distribution Webpage, Proventia Desktop 8 has replaced RealSecure Desktop. Are we supposed to download that Personal Firewall instead?
Yes. -Albert d'Heurle

I am having the same problem. I don't see a text field on the "Who's Who" page. - gth750h at mail.gatech.edu
Fixed. -Albert d'Heurle

I don't see create next to my name. gth725m
It looks like you go it :) -Albert d'Heurle

I just added my name to the page and it worked fine and the next time I clicked on it it was on there twice. I tried to get rid of one but now I have 3 links with a #2 by my name. I am not sure where that came from.
We will clean up that page. Go ahead and recreate your page without the #2. You can copy and paste the content from your old page to the new one. -Albert d'Heurle

I don't see create next to my name either. gth302a
Make sure you have *s around your name. -Albert d'Heurle

If I have changed my "gth..." address to an alias, can I send the assignment email from my alias@gatech.edu. If not, how do I change it back to being from my original gth?

Essentially, your alias and gth number are the same thing. Just make SURE that the subject line is EXACTLY the way we tell you, otherwise we won't be able to find your e-mail message, and that could be bad! Amanda Bennett

I recieved the following message when I tried to send the assignment email. There was an error sending your message: unable to add recipient [cc1315@cc.gatech.edu]: Invalid response code received from server. How can I correct this issue? ddunbar3 at mail.gatech.edu
cs1315, not cc1315. -Blake O'Hare

I was dumb and forgot the **** so yeah..can that be fixed please? Brittanie Crain
Just sign up again. We'll be deleting all the mishaps periodically. -Blake O'Hare

I have discovered the problem was the wrong email address to the following problem :I recieved the following message when I tried to send the assignment email. There was an error sending your message: unable to add recipient [cc1315@cc.gatech.edu]: Invalid response code received from server. How can I correct this issue? ddunbar3 at mail.gatech.edu Derrick Dunbar
cs1315@cc.gatech.edu -Blake O'Hare

Not that anyone has asked or brought it up, but...
If you have some sort of firewall software running on your computer (which you probably do, if you're using Windows XP and you have Service Pack 2) then you do NOT need to download the additional firewall. -Blake O'Hare

A bit more with the ^ alias question: In the message, we are to put our gt... number and which email client we are using, is it okay just to write my alias there (which happens to just be my name which could make it look like I was confused about the assignment)? If so, do I need to include@gatech.edu? Or should I put my original gt.... number? Also, is "SPECTRUM webmail" a right title for the "email client" part of the message?

You MUST use your issued PRISM ID. Please do not use an alias. "Spectrum Webmail" is sufficient for the email client. -Blake O'Hare

Hey, lol. I already took this course once and all of my info is still there when I tried to add to who's who, hahaha, is that okay? Are the labs the same? If so, do I get a freebie, or are you going to erase it? lol Let me know- Hillary Jones gtg809w

As long as it's made and has the correct information, we'll never know the difference (this is on your who's who page ONLY!)... Amanda Bennett

That link about the viruses goes to the list from 2002. Are we supposed to pick a virus from that year or a top 10 from 2005?
It is ok to pick a virus from the 2002 list or if you want a virus from 2005. Your choice. -Albert d'Heurle

How do we know that our e-mail was received? Eric Walker
Well if you did not get an email back saying that the email could not be delivered, then it was probably recieved. You could also double check the address you sent the email to. -Albert d'Heurle

Why is my name showing up under the "Z" category under the Who's Who page?
We have to manually alphabetize the names. When you wake up tomorrow morning your name will be under the correct letter. -Albert d'Heurle

Um... I downloaded the software and saved it and everything, but when I hit run it does nothing. What's wrong? Alexandra Pauley
Which software? -Albert d'Heurle

I was just messing around with the Who's Who page without realizing it was part of lab 1. Is there anyway you can just delete my entry because I can't add any information on my page? - Ranni Tewfik
Ranni, Read the rest of lab 1. You've made your page, now go to it by clicking on your name, click on edit on the red bar across the top, and then you can edit and add info onto that page, then save it. So far, it works fine, you just need to add the info. :) Amanda Bennett

I can't send emails to cs1315@cc.gatech.edu from Outlook Express or from Webmail. I'm getting the same message that the other two guys above said that they had been getting. Lindsey Thrift

I am having the same problem, and I thought that I might be mistyping the e-mail address, so I copied and pasted, and that still didn't work! Toni Walden

I've sent a test email to that address and checked it and it went through. There is a possibility that the mail server was down for a while when you tried. Double check to make sure you have everything correct and that you're sending it from your PRISM account. If it continues to send bounce-back messages, find a TA and forward the bounceback message to him/her or visit one of us in person and we'll see if we can get it sorted out. -Blake O'Hare

I recieved the following message when i tried to send the rest of lab 1 There was an error sending your message: unable to add recipient [cs1315@cc.gatech.edu]: Invalid response code received from server. What could be the problem?
Try again, I just sent an email and checked it and everything went fine. Double check your spelling ... If you have the same error (or a new one), then forward the error to one of the TAs. Larry Olson

I cannot downlaod JES, I read in the book that I need to maybe get a new version of Java but when i tried to download that it said error 1606
I just downloaded JES. It was painfully slow but it happened. Make sure that you're getting the version of JES for your operating system from Software and Tools. The error code 1606 you're getting from trying to install a new version of java comes is most likely because you're trying to do an online install. To fix this problem, there are downloads of java you can get where the whole thing is downloaded first and then installed. They can be found here (click on either Download JRE 5.0 Update 6 OR Download JDK 5.0 Update 6) then look for an installer listed as "offline". However, JES comes with the Java that you should need to run it. So try to download and unzip JES again or post more information if you continue to have problems. Larry Olson

the Proventia 8, and I feel stupid because I already had antivirus software and deleted it to do this... I am probably the worst person with computers ever! -Alexandra
So are things working now? Albert d'Heurle

It still is saying this when i try to send "I recieved the following message when i tried to send the rest of lab 1 There was an error sending your message: unable to add recipient [cs1315@cc.gatech.edu]: Invalid response code received from server." there is nothing wrong the spelling but i keep getting this message. George Cooper
What are you using to send the email? If using something like outlook, do you have multiple accounts configured? Would love more info. Larry Olson

I tried again to download and it still did not work, What should I do? HELP!
How are you trying to download? What exactly is happening on the screen? Larry Olson

oops, and I forgot my last name, so can you please delete the page I accidently made with only my first name? - Alexandra Pauley
Sure. -Albert d'Heurle

I could not add my name to the TA page #3 in accordance to my last name. I have added it at the end of the page. How can I move to the H section which starts my last name?
Dont worry. We will move it for you. -Albert d'Heurle

The coweb who's who seems to be locked by a password and I am unable to add my webpage. How do I get to edit it?-
Leland Franks
Add your name at the bottom inbetween 2 astricks. And then click "Add to Page." You should be able to create from there. -Tia Doppenberg

My computer broke over Christmas and when I tried to do the email lab from a friend's computer it was having problems. I am trying to do as many assignments as possible, but I'm having difficulty because it really won't work and I have tried everything. Would it be possible for me to get together with a TA to get help?

Sorry I didn't sign it... -Archel Bernard

I have attempted to add my name with astricks, however at the top of the page there is an error message stating the password is incorrect and I need to contact the system administrator to clear the lock. -Leland Franks
Do not click "edit" on the page. Just scroll to the bottom, and there is a comment box where you can add yourself. -Tia Doppenberg

I live off campus and my internet at my apartment, along with my phone line and cable, have been down for the past 3 days. Due to this, I am working from a library computer. How can I go about doing Lab 1, Part 2? -Miquela Simone Hiller
Miquela: Download the security software once you can get online again on your own PC. For now (i.e. in the library and before the lab deadline), assume that your computer is clean of viruses and answer the questions in Part 2 accordingly.
(forgot to sign that reply..... Colin Potts)|

Do we get TA's assigned by our last name? or we can just randomly contact any TA if we need help? If we do have particular TA's assigned, how do we find out who's for who?
You can ask any TA anything... well almost anything. You can also use AIM to contact a TA but first you have to find one that is online. -Albert d'Heurle

I've added my name and it wont show a "create" link so I tried adding my name again and still didnt work. How do I delete the extra name and get the create link?-Mary K Patton
Did you try putting *s around your name? -Albert d'Heurle

I tried sending it to the e-mail that you listed. It couldn't go through.

I sent it at 4:22 today(friday)

I just got an email that said that my Lab1 Part 2 email i sent failed to send. and its now well past 7 and i sent it in before it was due. can i send it againg or something or what? Marnie Schulz
Hi, Please forward the error message that you got back to me albert@gatech.edu. Also please try again and resend the email to cs1315@cc.gatech.edu -Albert d'Heurle
