Jython Environment for Students

For older versions of JES, see the
Media Compulation Planning Swiki
For this course, you will need to install JES (Jython Environment for Students). You will be doing all your homeworks with this. JES is a full-featured media computation environment for programming in Jython. It includes facilities for programming, debugging, and media examination. JES also comes with an extensive multimedia API, enabling easy and rapid manipulations of sounds, images, and on some platforms, video.

JES 3.0.6 --> NEW (August 21, 2007)

For Windows
For Mac
For Linux

Version 3.0.6 supersedes previous versions linked from this page and the Version 2 available on the textbook's CD-ROM.

If you have difficulty running JES (e.g. if it will not start or if it hangs repeatedly) please make sure you have the latest version of Java. If you are unsure, then seek a TA for help.

To run a program contained in a Python file, you must start JES directly and then load the Python file using the File menu. You cannot double-click on a Python file and expect to JES to start automatically and load that program.

Media Tools

There is an experimental version of MediaTools application available at mediatools-v5-sa.zip (Windows) and Mediatools-v5-Mac.sit (Macintosh). This version includes the facility to scale down (or up) pictures, so if you have a huge picture from a digital camera, you can scale it down to make it easier to use in movies and collages.
