Lab 1, Part 1: Introduction to Email and the CoWeb
Configuring and Using Email Clients
If you are currently using an email client such as Eudora, Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger, you will need to configure it so that you can access your GT Prism account (gtxxxxx@mail.gatech.edu or firstInitiaLastNameNumber@mail.gatech.edu, aliases are fine as long as they are gatech.edu) through GT Spectrum Mail.
If you do not have an email client, you can use Zimbra Webmail to do this part of the lab. You must still change your email address on the Webmail site. Go to Options -> Personal Information -> Edit Your Identities. Write your address (gtxxxxx@mail.gatech.edu) in the boxes that say: "Your From Address" and "Your Reply To Address".
All other questions you may have about accessing and maintaining your prism account can be found through OIT's Email FAQ
Assignment: Email Turnin
Once you have your email client of choice working with your GT Prism account, email your grading TA (they should have e-mailed you, but you can also find this information on T-square) from your client with the information listed below. The "from" address MUST be your GT Prism email address (gtxxxxx@mail.gatech.edu or firstInitiaLastNameNumber@mail.gatech.edu, alias is fine as long as it is from gatech.edu). We don't want to receive any email from your mindspring, hotmail, AOL, etc. account. If the email is not from your GT Prism account, you will not receive any credit for this part of the lab.
Here's what to include:
Subject line: This should read <Your name> - Lab 1, Part 1
Message: The message should include your Prism ID (gtxxxxx or firstInitialLastNameNumber) and which email client you are using.
Using the CoWeb
CoWeb is short for Collaborative Website. This is where you will find everything you will need for this course (like this lab!): all of your homeworks, labs, projects, announcements from the instructors and the TAs, answers to your questions, etc.
So let's learn how to use the CoWeb! Two of the most common things you'll be doing on the CoWeb is creating new CoWeb pages and editing pages. The CoWeb makes this very easy to do.
Assignment: CoWeb Turnin
Go to the CoWeb Homepage. You can do this by clicking on the "home" link at the top of this page.
You should see a icon labled "People" Click on the People icon. Now you should see a link called "Who's Who". Go to this page.
Make yourself a personal CoWeb page.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and locate the empty text entry field above the button that says "add to the page".
In this field, create a link to your web page by typing *Your Name*. Click the "add to this page" button once you are done.
You will now see your name on the who's who page with a "Create" button next to it. Clicking on this button will create a new CoWeb page.
After clicking on the "Create" button, you should see a new CoWeb page where the title is your name. You've just created your first CoWeb page!
Personalize your page clicking the edit button on the red bar just above your name. Note: If a box popups asking for a username and password use: attach/ carmen. You will be taken to a page with a large text entry field containing the text "Edit (your name) here." Erase that text and Add the following information: your email address, your major, your year, your hometown, and your hobbies. Click "save" after you're done. You can change this page anytime you want - just go to the page and click on the "edit" link at the top. Note: you may want to write your email as Prims ID at mail.gatech.edu rather than the usual Prism ID@mail.gatech.edu. This will prevent your email address from being picked up by spam bots.
If you have any problems, comments, or concerns about this assignment, post them to the Spring 2007 Lab 1 Questions page. If you have a question or a comment to make about a particular part of the class or a certain assignment, post it to the correct page.
Go to the Spring 2007 Lab 1 Questions page by clicking on this link. You will see that this page has a few posts on it.
If you have any questions about any part of Lab 1, post them here. Before posting your question, read through the other questions to make sure that no one else has already posted the same question. Also, if you know the answer to someone else's question, feel free to respond!
Now go to Lab 1 Post. Here we want you to practice posting to a CoWeb page. All you have to do is edit this page and post your favorite movie, your name, and your Prism ID . Don't forget to save your changes! TYPE IN THE BODY OF THE PAGE! Don't change the title!. Make sure you don't overwrite posts by previous students.
Turnin Checklist:
Email from your prism account to cs1315@cc.gatech.edu with subject "Your Name - Lab 1, Part 1" and with message: your GT number and your email client.
Create a CoWeb page reached by clicking on your name in "Who's Who". Page must include your email address, your major, your year, your hometown, and your hobbies.
Post to the #22 page with your favorite movie, your name, and your Prism ID.
If you already know some HTML, most of that will work on the CoWeb as well. You can find some CoWeb Tips and Tricks that shows examples of neat things you can do on the CoWeb and the "code" to make it happen.
