Yes. This is fine. If you already have a firewall on your computer, skip the downloading a firewall section of the assignment, and follow the instructions for if you don't have a virus. Go to the website listed. Pick one and write about it. Do NOT (as you unfortunatly learned the hard way) install two firewalls on your computer. They do fight and it's not pretty. Kelly Lyons
If you are sure it is your router's IP address, then yes you should be able to trust it. For more specific questions about things like this, you should talk to OIT or resnet as they know more about such things than I do. Kelly Lyons
Any of them is fine. Kelly Lyons
The alphabetizing is done manually by one of the TAs. Do not worry if yours is still not alphabetized. Just make sure that you did put asktrisks by your name at least one of the times you added it since you need to do this to make a page. Kelly Lyons
If you still don't see your name alphabatized and if it's not listed at the bottom of the page, you may want to add your name (with astericks) again at the bottom Amanda Bennett
The alphabetizing is done manually by one of the TAs. When you add your name, it should appear at the very bottom of the page. This is normal. Do not worry about the alphabetical part. That will be done later Kelly Lyons
If you would like the Realsecure instead, yes you should get rid of the other one first. However, you can also just keep the firewall you have as this will be much simpler and the firewall that comes with Windows will work perfectly fine. Kelly Lyons
It's fine if you're on there twice. You might want to make sure there's the correct information on both pages though, since you don't know which one your TA will look at. If you want one of them removed, let a TA know and we can do it for you. Amanda Bennett
Give the writeup in the email that you will send Kelly Lyons
There is no way for you to tell. Try again if you need to. Multiple submissions are okay. Amanda Bennett
Yes, as long as it is set up correctly. Amanda Bennett
Don't worry about that. You'll still get credit as long as your information is on the page somewhere. I'm trying to fix it right now. Kelly Lyons
What problems? It's hard to help without specifics. I would also suggest asking OIT since they are the supporters of the software. They would be more able to help with the installation. Kelly Lyons
Make sure that the filepath that you are entering in the writePictureTo function exists on your computer. Kelly Lyons
If you are 100% sure that the filepath is set up correctly and that you're checking the right folder, it's probably best to show your code to a TA in person. Since recitations are starting this week, take your code with you and try flagging your TA down before or after recitation. -Blake O'Hare
What error message do you get? It's hard to say what's happening without knowing that. If you can't get anything else to work, try restarting your computer. Amanda Bennett
You may want to try re-installing JES (from the CoWeb, not the CD). If that doesn't work, then you could have a Java problem and you may have to install a newer version of Java. -Blake O'Hare
If it takes more than 30 seconds to load, then something has gone seriously wrong. Try the usual fixes: restart computer, re-install JES. If that doesn't work, consult a TA or (if you are feeling brave) re-install Java. -Blake O'Hare
If you have a slow computer, it can take up to 2 minutes to load, so don't worry if yours takes more than 30 seconds. 2 hours is WAY too long however and there is definatly something wrong. Kelly Lyons
This is an issue with JES, not with webwork. JES does not have the ability to open itself when you click on a file. You must open JES itself and then from inside JES open the file to be able to view it in JES. Do not worry. Your assignment should be fine. Kelly Lyons
You're supposed to add that yourself to the filename when you save it. (And be sure it's .py, not .ply) -Blake O'Hare
Make sure you are downloading the right file. It should read JES.zip If you are still having trouble, get the copy that comes on the CD with the book. Kelly Lyons
It is showing you a path C:\Documents andSettings\Owner\Desktop\Jes\JES\waikiki.jpg and saying that there is no file at that path. Check to make sure that this path is a correct location in your computer and that it is spelled correctly. Kelly Lyons
The icon doesn't have to be a python. it can be anything. for instance, mine is just a little notepad icon, it depends on what you tell your computer to see it as. It is not the same reason JES can't open itself. JES can't open itself due to the way it was made. Just remember that. Anytime you want to open a *.py file, you need to open JES first and then find the file. Amanda Bennett
After you download JES, you do not want to open the .py file to get JES to run. You need to run the JES.exe file to open JES Kelly Lyons
If you know where the media files are and can find them you should be fine. THere is no exact place where you should put the files just recommendations. Albert d'Heurle
Make it big enough so that everything shows up. It should be about a half of a page if it's correcty sized. Kelly Lyons
When opening a .py file through JES, you have to first open JES and then open the file through JES. Kelly Lyons
When you ran writePictureTo in JES, the picture was saved on your computer. From within Word, you just want to insert that picture that was saved onto your computer into Word. Kelly Lyons
Are you able to type in the window? Are you opening the JES.exe file? Kelly Lyons
You can if you'd like. It's not necessary. Kelly Lyons
Make sure you are downloading the mac version of JES. Kelly Lyons
The .sit file is a compressed file. When it downloads, it should unstuff itself leaving a folder in the same directory called JES Folder. The JES that you want to run is in that folder. If it isn't unstuffing it automatically, try ctrl click and see if it's an option. Kelly Lyons
I've never seen an error like that. Does it give any sort of error message? If you have a laptop, I'd suggest bringing it to a TA during their office hours. Otherwise, you can go to a computer in the library and download JES onto that computer for this assignment. Kelly Lyons
This question has been answered elsewhere on this page. An answer has also been posted to the announcements page. You must first open JES and then open the file from within JES. This does not mean that your submission is in error. It is a JES issue, not a webwork issue. Kelly Lyons
See above Kelly Lyons
I'm not sure I understand your question. You need to insert whichever picture you wrote out in example2 into the word document you submit. Kelly Lyons
No, you must turn in ALL of your files at once in webwork. each time you submit something, it erases your last submission. You can e-mail yourself the document you used for the word part of the lab, put it on your computer at home (even if you don't have word...just don't try opening it) and then sending in everything together from there. If you need more help with this, IM a TA or go to someone's office hours. Amanda Bennett
Did you download the course software from this site http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/mediaComp-plan/94 ? Albert d'Heurle
In your eample 2 code are you sure you have the line file = pickAFile() ? Albert d'Heurle
The answer to this question is posted elsewhere on this page, as well as in the announcements page. Kelly Lyons
no and no Amanda Bennett
As long as you have all of the requirements and there is nothing offensive it should not count against you. If you're worried about it for any reason, I'd suggest you leave it out until after you recieve a grade and then feel free to add or subtract whatever you'd like. Kelly Lyons
Use a different text editor. Kelly Lyons
The easiest way would be to create a new file with the correct html in it and with the same filename (index.html I assume) and then reupload it. This should copy over the previous file and update your site. You could also edit the file directly. This would require connecting to and working from the acme computer. Kelly Lyons
They can be on linked pages so long as all of the requirements are linked from the main page. Kelly Lyons
Pretty much :) Amanda Bennett
Check the syllabus. -Blake O'Hare
<body background="your_image.jpeg"> -Blake O'Hare
As long as you don't blind your TA with flashing popups or exploit Internet Explorer weaknesses. -Blake O'Hare
"Submit?" When you upload your page, we will go to the following URL... http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gt[whatever your prism ID is]/ When we get there, we'll expect to see your page. That is all. However you want to rig it up is fine by us as long as we see it by going to that URL which requires the first page you see to be called index.html. -Blake O'Hare
Remember to use a relative URL and not an absolute URL. Also, make sure your capitalization is correct. -Blake O'Hare
It's just to make it easy to read. You could do your entire web page on the same line and it would look the same in the browser. -Blake O'Hare
As long as they display correctly, GIFs are fine. – Matt Britt
when you save it, go to all files. when you type in the name, type in name.html and that will save it as html :) Amanda Bennett
<p align="center"><img src="whatever" /></p> -Blake O'Hare
...or can we just put
Make sure you have a file in your list of files that is named index.html -Albert d'Heurle
Upload pictures from your computer to your personal webspace so that when people view your webpage, the pictures they see are FROM YOUR WEBPAGE as opposed to linking to images that are on some other website. -Blake O'Hare
<img src="me at homecoming 05.jpg" />
Relative URL's are like the one you have shown above. Absolute URL's are things like http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~your gtg number/me at homecoming 05.jpg. Is your webpage on your desktop too? When you upload your .html file, make sure you put that image in the same folder. -Blake O'Hare
Question 1: It needs to be named index.html or index.htm, not just index. Question 2: there is something wrong with your HTML. You are probably using an <a> tag instead of an <img /> tag. -Blake O'Hare
Do keep in mind that yesterday was still Fall Break and TA's go out of town too. We're required to check our email every 24 hours while school is in session and only once during breaks, so you should be receiving a response soon. -Blake O'Hare
Anytime. -Blake O'Hare
It does need to be index.html, but the text you pasted indicates that it's just called index without the .html. Rename the file and (assuming all permissions are set correctly) it will work fine. -Blake O'Hare
index.html -Blake O'Hare
The permissions need to set correctly. This information is located Here -Albert d'Heurle
Make sure your main html file is named index.html -Albert d'Heurle
Sometimes things are case sensitive. like .jpg is not the same as .JPG. Let me know if that helps. -Albert d'Heurle
Sure but I would hestitate to put my ID card on a website. -Albert d'Heurle
you are correct -Albert d'Heurle
Did you make sure you uploaded the html file for the other page? -Albert d'Heurle
You can use the following tags where link is the color of links that have not been clicked, vlink is the color of links that have been clicked and alink is the color of the link as it is being clicked. Hope this helps -Albert d'Heurle
Did you make sure that they are in the same directory as ypour index.html file? When you created your webpage where all of the html files in the same folder? Make sure you set you the links correctly in your main index.html file. Spelling counts. Also your premissions might not be set correctly -Albert d'Heurle
Glad to help -Albert d'Heurle
When you are using winSCP you should be albe to right click on the file and click on rename. Another way would be to save the file as index.html. -Albert d'Heurle
Sure -Albert d'Heurle
Sorry, I forgot to link the html part. I just had the explanation before. Try this: <body bgcolor="#FFFFFF" vlink="#FF0000" alink="#00FF00" link="#0000FF">-Albert d'Heurle |
I do not think a .psd will work. I would open up photoshop and save the picture as a jpeg. -Albert d'Heurle
Yes, include a DOC type. You can use this one <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">-Albert d'Heurle |
After you start your table add the line <Table border ="1">where the number is the size of the border. -Albert d'Heurle |
Do use a background image you have to use the tag <body background="image.jpg">. The .jpg should work fine but be aware that the endings can be case sensitive -Albert d'Heurle |
Yes. Or if you're modifying the text inside the heading so much, you could just leave off the <h#> tag and just use <font. -Blake O'Hare
Instead of having text after the a href tag you will use the tag to insert an image. So <a href="page.html"><img src="turtle.jpg"></a>. -Albert d'Heurle |
Did you make sure you uploaded the picture you used for the background? -Albert d'Heurle
I think that will be fine -Albert d'Heurle
Im not quiet sure what you mean by dogtag. But if you meant doctype then yes it should go on the top of the index.html file and every other html file you creat. -Albert d'Heurle
You could use JES to make the picture bigger :) or you could use another program to edit the picture and make it bigger. -Albert d'Heurle
You need to set the permissions for the folder, files, and your ~gtg#### folder. -Blake O'Hare

Those are the right tags, but you have a few space and slash typos. If you want to go to a different webpage, please remember to include the http:// -Blake O'Hare
That's your prism ID and password. Please read the WinSCP tutorial. -Blake O'Hare
Well you have to creat a new page with a different name say newpage.html. Then in your index.html you would add the link <a href="newpage.html"> New Page</a>. Hope that helps -Albert d'Heurle |
Yes. Make sure you can load the page from your prism account. -Albert d'Heurle
Internet Explorer is evil in its purest form! Hope this helps you with your centering problem. In all seriousness, IE makes some weird guesses about alignment especially when it comes to tables. You can get around this by specifying that you want certain text to be left-aligned. Usually this involves adding an align="left" attribute to the tag containing the text that you don't want to be centered. -Blake O'Hare
? Please rephrase this. -Blake O'Hare
Oops, I read that too fast. Even though you figured it out, if anyone else is having the same problem, just take what I said above and replace "left" with "center" to fix it. -Blake O'Hare
If your page renders in one browser but not in another, this is usually a good indication that something really funky is going on with your tag placement. Double check your main tags such as <head> and <body> and make sure they're being used the correct way. Also check to make sure all your tags are closed and all attribute values have both an opening AND closing quotation mark. This is kind of odd, because it's usually the other way around since IE is more forgiving about that kind of thing than FireFox. Or I might be misunderstanding what you mean by "pull the page up". -Blake O'Hare
There is only one body tag. Ever. -Blake O'Hare
Your webpage on your computer is not case sensitive about filenames. On prism, it is. Usually when this happens it's because you used .jpg instead of .JPG or vice versa. -Blake O'Hare
Javascript isn't HTML. So yes. -Blake O'Hare
<img src="whatever.gif" style="border: 0px" /> if memory serves correctly. -Blake O'Hare

If it works, it works. Personally, I'm not sure I can entirely explain the code you posted. However, I can say there is a MUCH shorter way to do this. Keep Googlin'. -Blake O'Hare
Use < in place of < The gray box on each page's edit page has a list of these codes. -Blake O'Hare
See my above statement. -Blake O'Hare
You should be able to use WinSCP without going through this. -Blake O'Hare

Specify the colors rather then let it use defaults. Use the color attribute in the font tag or the link, alink, vlink attributes in the body tag to specify color. -Blake O'Hare
There is something wrong with your onmouseout code. Perhaps an invalid filename? -Blake O'Hare
Rename the main page index.html -Albert d'Heurle
No you do not need a bibliography. The goal of the assignment is mainly to learn powerpoint. 85% of your grade is determined by your powerpoint skills and 15% on your topic. Kelly Lyons
There needs to be at least one of those listed (picture, graph, chart, etc). You do not have to have one of each. There is no extra credit for this assignment. Your TA was mistaken. Kelly Lyons
I do not think that will work -Albert d'Heurle
Monday, November 14 -Albert d'Heurle
If you use something on the drawing toolbar to make a slide, you should get credit.poof #10
If you can provide a valid link to computers, it would count. Kelly Lyons
My, my, you're jumping ahead. -Blake O'Hare
The percent change can be negative Kelly Lyons
The motion below is calculated the same way as the motion above, only you will use the low column instead of the high column to get it. Kelly Lyons
The submission for Lab 5 becomes available tomorrow when the assignment officially comes out on the syllabus Kelly Lyons
As long as the error bars are there, you can ignore the message. It's usually just a warning. If the error bars aren't showing up, you should go see a TA. There might be something else weird going on. Kelly Lyons
Just the bold red and bold black. I believe the instructions tell you explicitly how to do one of them. So the on your own part is referring to the other one. Kelly Lyons
You can do that, or you can put the formula in and it will just have an error. Kelly Lyons
No. It was just there to tell you it exists. Kelly Lyons
The x coordinates should be the date. Kelly Lyons
If the points are all around the same area, then it means that the stocks never rose or fell. Go back to your data and look and see the stock values. If they don't ever change much, then you're ok. If they do change then you've made a mistake somewhere. Kelly Lyons
It shouldn't completely change the graph. You probably did something wrong somewhere. Kelly Lyons
It's difficult to fix this problem without seeing what is happening. You are probably using a different version of Excel than the lab was written in. Try going to a computer lab on campus or seeing a TA in office hours. Kelly Lyons
It's due on Wed. The lab page says Wed. Kelly Lyons
The whole column should be red/black. The first column however may not be depending on how you did it because there's no previous day to compare with. Kelly Lyons
You need to change the output location so that it is saved to a place on your computer. The values should not be identical to the .txt file. They dates should be more recent up to the present time. Kelly Lyons
If you do it in one and then copy and paste, it should save the $ Kelly Lyons
Webwork is having issues. GIve it a day. Kelly Lyons
The graph should automatically change when you change the data by sorting it. Blair MacIntyre
| For selecting the column in the Error Bar dialog box, I did a little Google searching, and found an example that caused me to do something like this for the +: | |
=DisneyPrices.txt!$G$1:$G$66 | |
with the corresponding thing for -. Blair MacIntyre
The #### should appear in some of the data from the txt file. This is ok. If you are getting that in the cells that you are altering, this is not ok. The I2 column can be blank. That is ok. I can't tell if your formula is wrong if I don't know what you wrote. If you did the extra credit, your data will be more recent and the TA will notice the difference in dates. The file on the website is from a few months ago and so the dates are from a different time than if you do the extra credit and get the newer information. To turn it in, all you need to do is submit your .xls file which should contain the data sheet and the graph on a separate sheet. Kelly Lyons
You should email your submission to your TA in addition to attempting to resubmit it. Webwork was having issues a few days ago. It should be fixed by now. But just to be safe, I'd email your submission to your TA. Kelly Lyons
