I am trying to start on Lab 5 and when I try to attach an image using the attach button like the instructions say, I keep getting a box that pops up asking for an ID and password. It won't let me attach, what should I do?

When attaching from off-campus, use the username "attach" and the password "carmen" (without the quotes). Mark Guzdial

How do we upload onto the collage page?

Click attach, click browse. Select your picture and click OK. Then click "Upload". Mark Guzdial

Should the midterm be graded out of 100 pts not 105pts? I'm probably confused, but it seems that the 5 bonus pts were not really bonus pts.

The maximum grade is 105, but the percentages were out of 100 (or 75, if problem #2 were dropped). Mark Guzdial

So if it says 70/105.... is my grade a 70 or is it 70/105? Sorry for the confusion.
Your grade is 70%, whether it's out of 100 or 75. Mark Guzdial

was problem #2 dropped?
For some people – see Announcements-Spring 2003. Mark Guzdial

When I try to use Squeak, it will let me select a picture but it won't show it. Am I doing something wrong or is there anything you can think of that might make it work? Sarah Edwards
Did you click "OK"? Mark Guzdial

i know that you said that it was graded out of 100, but i got a one-hundred on the first midterm and a 98/105 on the second, and it says my average for midterms is a 96.66 so i just wanted to make sure that you were going to fix that. it is counting the extra credit when determining our grade.

I don't use WebWork's averages. You have a 98 and a 100, which sounds to me like an average of 99 before the final. Mark Guzdial

Have ALL of the grades been changed on WebWorks to include the problem 2 drop?
No, you still have the maximum of problem #2 dropped or not. What has changed is that I figured out how to tell WebWork that the grades are out of 100 but up to 105 is possible. (Note: AS I SAID IN CLASS THIS MORNING...) Mark Guzdial

what is the best way to set up and appointment with you? Should I just come to your office hours on Monday? David Williams
Yes – directions to my office are on the page Mark Guzdial. I also have my general schedule linked off there – check for an open time and send me email at guzdial@cc.gatech.edu. Mark Guzdial

Why does the color I use for HTML look different on my compter than other computers?
Different video cards have better or worse color synchronization. Different monitors can also shift colors subtly. Mark Guzdial

Your TA'S wrecklessly and unmercifully subtract points.Did you set those kind of standards for them? even in calculus you don't loose 8 to 12 points in each question because you missed a "number" or a "word".At the end of the day, how much points will be left? This is terrible. I don't think anyone in this class is a senior cs major, but we are expected to be perfect.that's why the scores are bad too, the "perfection expectations."
I wrote the grading standards, and I was in the room with the TA's grading(I graded Problem #2), so that I could answer their questions on how to grade. Don't blame the TA's. You are welcome to come see me at office hours and argue your case. Mark Guzdial

I feel like these were graded SO harsh. I am in class, I knew every problem on the exam review, and I studied for hours, and I STILL made a 68. I hadn't even SEEN anything like the list problem ever!! I am so frustrated becuase this class was going SO well at the beginning, and now I feel like I am in hell.
The list problem was the one that was dropped for most people if that helped their grade. The next problem to cause people difficulty was the contacts search problem, and you had seen problems like that in lecture. Problem #1 (with tracing the programs) lost a lot of points, too, and that one you've seen LOTS of times. Mark Guzdial

On our HW, my program keeps giving me an error for this line:
for sourceX in range (1, getWidth (flower1)):
It says: A local or global name could not be found.
Please check line 12 of C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly\My Documents\CS 1315\hw3.py

Doesn't this mean that sourceX hasnt been defined? I am trying the program (recipie 39) out of the book. Please help! Kelly Farrell
It sounds more like flower1 isn't defined. Try putting "print flower1" on the line before it and see what happens. Or, go to the Options and choose "Expert" mode. It'll tell you exactly what name it can't find. Mark Guzdial

Well Sir, could you please reduce the harshness of your grading standards. The points that come off cause so much harm, some of us have to graduate this semester or next. I think we should get more credit for the process too.I study hard and when i feel I'm progressing, then my grades come as a surprise and disappointment and i really don't hold myself all together responsible.

You don't have the midterms back yet – you don't know what you lost points for, and if it was a "number" or "word" or something more significant. Wait until you see them, and if you think something was judged too harshly, come see me! I don't bite, and I do take arguments seriously. Mark Guzdial

BTW, anybody have any responses to those questions at the top of the page?!? Mark Guzdial

Is the final exam comprehensive?

Yup. Mark Guzdial

Just a comment about the week for future classes. I think that the homework assignment is too distant from when the material was taught in class. I think that this homework would have been a breeze when we were doing pictures. Maybe switch it up and put this homework back then, and schedule the labs later.

Thanks – I'm thinking similar things for the Fall. That's why this is a pilot offering of the course... Mark Guzdial
