Very Important: Last day for grade changes is this Friday (Dec. 3rd). You are responsible for informing your TA of any possible grading discrepancies. All grades should be posted by Wednesday. Please check your grades and, if you feel there are any mistakes, e-mail your TA ASAP. Greg Leo

My office hours today will be extended from 2-4:30, since I will be cancelling them on Wednesday due to the break. Issues on CS1316

I had this question come in via email:

I'm thinking about taking CS1315 in the Spring. It's my understanding that
CS1315 is going the change next semester to meet the prerequisite for CS1322.

Will the new CS1315 use the current book? Will the class still use JES?

Here was my reply:

Wow – that is quite the rumor! Do you know where you heard that one? I'd like to head that off at the pass!

No, there are no plans to change CS1315 at all! We will be using a new book, but only because we're finally getting a nationally-published version (from Prentice-Hall) rather than having a custom book produced. Yes, we'll still use JES.

What starts next semester is CS1316 – the new SECOND course. CS1316 has CS1315 as its pre-req, and it meets the pre-req for CS1322.

Seriously – if there's an advisor who's misinforming students, I'd like to know and address it.

If you hear this rumor, too, please set people straight. CS1315 isn't changing, but CS1316 is coming. Mark Guzdial

The deadline for HW3 has been moved to Wednesday Sept. 29 from Monday Sept. 27. There's going to be a power outage in the College of Computing Friday to Sunday Sept. 24-26, which will most probably take out the CoWeb server. To make sure that you have the opportunity to ask questions and read responses, we'll extend the deadline. Note, however, that the Take Home Exam schedule is NOT changing (we can't afford to move everything back in the schedule two days), so there will be an overlap of two days on your Take Home Exam 1. If you are a mac user and you're looking for help check out the new mac page: Macs

What's the difference between Second Edition and First Edition of the text? They're about 75% the same. Big differences are:

Bug fixes in Second Edition, objectives statements at the beginning, and summaries at the end.
The new chapter on GUIs
The new section in Speed on what makes a computer fast, so what you should look for in buying a fast computer
The new Joe the Box example in Objects
New examples scattered throughout, like two-level grayscaling and edge detection
Appendix A, summarizing Python
Perhaps biggest issue for students: New chapter and page numbers, so it's harder to track relevant readings.
