Summer 2004 Soapbox

oh! whats up with us. We felt so sorry that Larry left that we did not even change the bubble. come on! cheer up summer semester is getting over.
This is YOUR platform! Tell us what you think!

Last term's Soapbox is at Spring 2004 Soapbox.

Put your comments at the bottom separated by underscores. The bottommost phrase, comment, issues shows up on every page.

Welcome to CS1315, Summer 2004!

Hey, someone fixed the lab page. I guess this means we can ask questions now.

If you had already done your Lab 1 post to the coweb, then please redo it. There is a new Lab 1 post page that is for this semester as opposed to Spring 2004. I tried to bring as many posts over as I could but invariably I missed some. Please be sure to check. Larry Olson

TA-Student Pairings are now here. Larry Olson

Up-to-date TA-Student Pairings are now here. Sorry for the confusion. Larry Olson

The turnin system should now be up and running. If you have problems, email me. Larry Olson

Would you like to make a comment?!? Click on the Snake at the top of the page. (It will say change bubble.)

PREQUIZ 1 IS NOW AVAILABLE AT PreQuiz1. Instructions are there. Be sure to have it done by class on Monday. Larry Olson

[Crickets chirping]

i'm gonna name myself 'nofeet'. i'm from the cartoon called LITTLE BEAR.

Is hw 1 still due on Memorial Day?

Sure is....

How do you turn a fox into an elephant?

stupid idiot!!

QUIZ 1 "CURVE"As you get quiz 1 back, check to see if you got the pixel rounding problem correct (127.5 should have been floored to 128). If you didn't AND you had points taken off for it, then you are due to get 1 point back on your quiz. To redeem this one point, see your nearest TA at breakout or office hours. Larry Olson

The Midterm Review for the first test has been posted! More questions should be posted by Monday. Check back frequently. Don't forget to post any questions or comments that you might have.
Lauren Walker
More Questions have been posted
please note the small changes on question # 4, But what does it do?

When can we expect responses to answers on the Midterm?

We try to check them as often as we can, so I would say within a day (much likely less) from when you post your question/answer. Fair enough? Nicole Seekely
Also, I think it might help to post your name after you post something. Of course, if you'd rather stay anonymous, go for it.
Also note that we will not tell you whether or not you are exactly correct. We will just tell you that something doesnt look right or that something is wrong. Larry Olson

When's the last day to drop a class and get a W?

I'm pretty sure its June 18..._

Hope everyone's enjoying their weekend before the test!

Is there a REVIEW session today?! Please say yes!

Midterm 1 will not include anything on sound processing :) - monica
PEOPLE, people... to post your code on CoWeb so it appears with the same indentions and everything as it does in JES, put <HTML><CODE> in front of your code and </CODE></HTML> after it. It will make it much easier for everyone to read. Thanks and good luck on your midterm!! Nicole Seekely

so about the takehome exam...will it be available online soon? -gtg014s

will the midterm grades be in in time to know if we need to drop the course or not? Is drop day Friday June 18?
We've turned in the midterm grades. If you really want to know your grade, email me (or Monica). Yes, June 18th is drop day. -kk

When should we expect the take home exam to be released... is there a standard time that everything gets released at on it's set day?

I would like to get started on the take home exam as soon as possible so that it will not dominate my weekend.

The take-home exam is posted... please remember not to post any code related to the exam on the coweb. -kk
To any students who need to take a MAKEUP for MIDTERM1, come to class tomorrow as if it was a normal Monday or Friday (Meet me in the Physics building, lecture hall 3 at 1040). I will give the Exam from 1050-1150. You cannot makeup the Exam unless Prof. Sweat has authorized it. Contact me if you are going to be there. Also my office hours for this week are canceled. Larry Olson

For any of you who have gone that far ahead and finished the work, there is a brand new Lab5 to do. My hats off to those of you who did lab5 already, but Im gonna have to ask you to do the new one instead. Larry Olson
Monica here - My Office Hours are at a new location. I'm holding them in the College of Computing room CCB 130 (Mac Lab). Very near the water fountain across the commons area from the breakout classroom. Come see me. Monica Sweat
My office hours are cancelled today! Lauren Walker
I've changed my Thursday office hours to 4-5 in the Library West workstations. Nicole Seekely

where is prequiz 2!
Look for it online by the other one at 6 tonight Larry Olson
It was handed out in class - 10:40 a.m. Remember lecture?? Prequiz 2 is also available online. See the quiz link from the top page. For the record, the next prequiz will not be available online. It will be handed out during class only. Be there. Monica
There is a good discussion on the comments page that probably has to do with what a few of you are feeling/thinking with regards to the course.
I can now be found on the second floor of the library during my office hours, no more first floor. -Blake O'Hare
My office hours have been changed to Monday evenings in the CoC. Check out TA contact info for details -Kelly Lyons

WASSUP with the blinkin weather ... not to say I dont enjoy a good thunderstorm but this is ridiculous

What did the five fingers say to the face?

I don't know...what?

SMACK!!!

Is anyone else on here a fan of the show Reno 911! besides myself?

I am!! I love Officer Jim Dangle. The short-shorts do it for me :).

"Don't mess with Meth...Gwyneth..."

My office hours will be from 3-5 today! Lauren Walker
where can we ask questions for prequiz 2!
You could ask a TA (in person, via EMAIL or IM), another student, or tomorrow right before the quiz. Larry Olson

Can we expect the second midterm review this weekend?
Yes, either late Sat. or early Sun.

Our Beloved TAs, the sooner you can see that the Midterm2 Review is available to us, the more we'll love you. :o) We have a lot to get done before (and after) the holiday.

Midterm 2 Review is up (at least most of it). Please check back soon for a couple more questions. Nicole Seekely

bah, I can't figure out when our final is for this class, can someone help a girl out?

I think it's the Monday of Finals week at 11:30am

One more question has been added to the review. Please post any questions, answers, etc. and help each other out! We'll hold a review session Thu. evening for the Midterm - more info. on that later. Nicole Seekely
My office hours for tomorrow (6.30.2004) have been pushed back to friday. They will be at the same time and place, just a different day. Larry Olson
I will not be having my office hours this Thursday at Starbucks; instead we will be having a review session. Specific time and location will be posted later. Dannon Baker

Review session will be on Thursday from 7PM to 10PM in Room 101 of the College of Computing. Larry Olson
Can someone tell me exactly where in the sylabus I should start studying? Is sound on this test?
Almost everything in this class builds on what you have learned previously. You should really know the subject matter of the first test, and everything since. Sound will be on the test. Check out the test review. Dannon Baker
Where should we stop studying?

So is network, database and movies on the test too?
My office hours are cancelled today! Lauren Walker
Know what is on the review. Know what was on the first test. Know these two things very well and you will go far.

We might not put anything on networks, databases, or movies on this test. However, you should have a very general knowlege of them by now. Get the big idea in these things and dont worry about having to code them or get into details on them. Larry Olson

Good luck all on the test tomorrow. Also, DONT FORGET TO BRING SOME PICTURE ID. One more thing, my office hours for this week are canceled ... send me an email, or IM me with questions (I will also hang around for 10mins or more after the test to take questions.) Larry Olson
I'm missing a couple of things from the homework, but am almost done, if anyone else is in the same boat and wants to collaborate then IM me at cdehn305

I noticed that when you paste code into AIM, AIM tries to interpret it and messes it up. So I made this little script that converts code into text that can be pasted into AIM without it messing it up. -Blake O'Hare
If a simple Homework 4 soloution can be posted somewhere than it will help us with TakeHome2- TA's please
It will be done. Look for it on or before the 4thLarry Olson
Here's a few HW4 Solutions I wrote out -Blake O'Hare

A little observation about the tutorials, such as the one for Lab 5. Maybe you shouldnt explain how something works, and then try to teach the concept by starting off doing it wrong. Its confusing as hell if you understood the idea to begin with (such as rfind). Otherwise they are very informative and well-written. Thanks

Larry could you point us where have you posted the simple solution to HomeWOrk 4 and can we expect you to see in the breakout sessions so that we can ask you questions about homework and takehome 2.Thanks

Maybe I am just not looking in the right place but I cant find the easy solution to HW 4, is it the one provided by Blake O'Hare or has Larry Olson done his own?
Go with the one that Blake did ... I could write another one that I would consider easier. However, I would wager that most students would disagree. Also, I think that Blake's works well enough. So unless I see demand for another solution yet, then Blake's is it. Larry Olson

My office hours for today will go from 1-3 instead of their normal time (they will still be in the library). Larry Olson

Look! I can edit the bubble!
i'm proud of ya, son.

sucks, know how to do the extra credit, but just too tired...

You guys probably hate collages by now, but if you don't, I wrote a collage generator that I've actually had some cool stuff come out of.
Check out the example collages. Dannon Baker
I think you're outta luck, it won't be posted due to poor class attendance.

Actually none of the pre-quizzes are supposed to be posted. This semester the first two were, but after the second one, I did post a warning that the remaining ones would be as usual for the course - not posted. They are meant to be handed out in class only. This was not decided the day of class due to attendance. Monica Sweat

HOLY COW!!! Exam 2 was insane! Can we possibly hope for some sort of "consideration" or "mercy" type grading if the overall grades aren't too stellar? That would be super. I'm not looking for an easy way out but I think it's fair to say that even students who have been doing extremely well in the class had difficulties with it.

Monica
I was in class the day we were supposed to get prequiz one. It wasn't handed out in class and I had to go to you after class to ask where it was and you said it would be posted online.
On the first day of class you said that the Soapbox was a place where you could "play around on the coweb".
That bubble changes very often sometimes and you never said we were responsible for what is posted it the soapbox. This is very unfair.

There was some confusion at the beginning of the semester between the TA's and the Professors about Quiz 1, that's why it wasn't available in class. We posted it online because this problem was obviously our fault. Because the problems were caused by us, we posted the second quiz as a courtesy to anyone who might not have heard that it would only be available in class. We then posted a warning in the Soapbox stating that the 3rd quiz would not be available online. If you were not in class when the 2nd pre-quiz was handed out, or this past Wednesday, or didn't happen to catch the Soapbox message, then I guess you missed the announcement. I'm sorry if anyone feels that this is unfair but, there is only so much we can responsible for. Lauren Walker

Monica said the soapbox is a place where you can mess around on the coweb. She did say to check the announcements page and there is nothing about the quizes on the announcement page. This is not just unfair but it entirely goes against what Monica said.

I think what it was, was that only the first part of monica's message got put up on the snake... so most people didn't catch the second part of it. Either way it says lectures are mandatory on the first day's slides

Whatever reason it was it is unfair and everyone knows it. There is no reason to do this to us it is entirely unfair.
You are all adults. If it is set forth that lectures are mandatory, then you are responsible for anything that happens during them. I made it to class. Why didnt you?
because i dont learn anything in that class and the quizes were ran the other way all semester long
So youve got a 100 in the class up till now and could teach the class as well as or better than prof. Sweat or KK ?

Exactly. Go over the material that was in the lecture this past week and you should be fine with the quiz. When it comes down to it, it's a fraction of a fraction of your grade and if you're learning so much more by not showing up, it really shouldn't make that big of a difference.

And um...everyone doesn't think it's unfair. I think it's totally fair and I'm sure a few others think it's totally fair too. Take responsibility for your actions.|

Could someone kindly show me where on the syllabus it says that lectures are mandatory? Sorry but I have to agree whole heartedly that prequiz 3 is BS.

Not able to find any info on this???

Okay. Let me point you to two places that state that attendance is required. Go to the class's website. Click on "syllabus and lecture slides." The very first link to the powerpoint slides named "IntroductionToCourse.ppt" slide 17. Also, top level of coweb, click on "grading." Here is a direct quote: "Attendance in lecture is not recorded, but is still mandatory."

I'd say it is quite clearly documented.

Monica Sweat

YOU KNOW YOU GO TO TECH WHEN....

...your friend makes a funny comment and you say "That's going on my profile"...
...you speak in acronyms
"CS", "CRC", "COC", "gaTech", "IC", "OIT", "Double E"...
...you turn everything into a drinking game...
...you know how to make all different kinds of smiley faces using your keyboard.... :)
...you find nothing wrong with sitting in front of the tv watching the discovery channel, the history channel, or the weather channel...
...you hope that the cs1315 students in England are reading the soap box...
...you get excited about an updated version of the TI-calculator...
...you talk about going out to Buckhead and end up at Peachtree Tavern and/or Moondawgs...
...you know at least one person who has mastered DDR...
...you argue about a CS quiz over the class website...
...you get excited when you try posting something to the soapbox and it works...
first powerpoint lecture (first day) first few couple of slides
I won't be having my office hours today. Nicole Seekely
now look what you did. cause of that list, she won't be having her office hours.

I agree, it is fair. For those of you still hung up on that issue, you've got bigger problems than CS1315 if you think life will be fair. (Probably that public education indoctrination at work.) However, delude yourself not, the intention and method of implementation are decidedly petty

This class is so poorly managed. This class is not very representative of a first class school like Georgia Tech. And a matter of fact I do have an A and I haven't been to class in weeks. Everyone knows this is true and there are only a handful willing to speak out on it.

If you would like to be a TA in the fall, please apply at the following link If you did well, enjoyed the material, or perhaps want to see something changed, or would like a challenge or something different. Also contact me if you want more info. Larry Olson

Reading of the soapbox is not required. Lecture and breakout attendance is required. Someone was unable to find the information about attendance being mandatory. Let me point it out. Go to the class's website. Click on "syllabus and lecture slides." The very first link to the powerpoint slides named "IntroductionToCourse.ppt" slide 17. Also, top level of coweb, click on "grading." Here is a direct quote: "Attendance in lecture is not recorded, but is still mandatory." I'd say it is quite clearly documented.

Secondly, this is not some sinister plot that some posts here might have others believe. Pre-quizzes are not supposed to be posted. They are to be handed out during lecture. Lecture is mandatory. In the end, it is your choice.

Monica Sweat

Let's all get along for these last couple of weeks together. In the vast scheme of CS1315, the Pre-Quiz 3 confusion doesn't matter all that much. Sure, some of us were a little upset, but it's almost over. There's no sense in remaining mad about it. By the time we've graduated and moved on with our lives, the grade we received in CS1315 won't even matter, so let's try to have fun with the stuff we're learning for the remainder of the summer. crystal

I am leaving town on Wed. this week and will not return until this Sat. As a consequence, my office hours will be canceled for this week. Larry Olson

oh! wats up with us. We felt so sorry that Larry left taht we did not even change the buble. come on! cheer up summer semester is getting over.

Are we going to be given a review for the final too? If so, when is it going to be posted?

I will be in the library later this evening (probably around 7/7:30ish or so) if you need last minute help with hw5 -Blake O'Hare
...and I'm here till midnight -Blake O'Hare

We haven't had a chance to discuss whether of not we will be able to do a review for the final. We will be posting an announcment as soon as we know something. Lauren Walker

Do we at least get a review packet with questions?
Oh yes, but I'm not sure who's in charge of doing that yet. And most likely we will have a review session if you guys would like one. Nicole Seekely

yes, please :)

The final review is up. Larry Olson
My office hours will be moved from Thursday to Wed. from 2:30-4:30 Lauren Walker

Vote in the primary today!

Will someone please read hw6 questions...mine have been there awhile and no one's answered them. Thanks!

There was a question below the text box that I didn't see before. I think all the current questions are now answered. Sorry if there was a delay. -K.K. Lamberty

I will not be holding my office hours today. Please e-mail me if you have any questions or anything. Nicole Seekely

Final Exam review will be this FRIDAY from 7 - 10 in the CoC rm. 101. Come with questions. Larry Olson

Is Friday night 7-10 really the best time for a review? Why not earlier and why at dinner time?
Well... we wanted it on saturday but when I went to reserve a room, friday was what was there. Earlier ... thats when I thought dinner was. Im normally munching about 6ish and finishing around 7. You can always come later seeing as we go until 10. The only complaint I figured people would have was about wanting to go out on friday night.Larry Olson
I have some places to be at, this firday to which I have commited previosly and since I thought they would not conflict b/c our TA said the review will be on weekend. Larry is there no room available Saturday or Sunday? and if not can you please be there after class tomorrow so those of us who can't come ask our questions there?
I am going to attempt to change the room tomorrow. If you do not hear from me before the appointed time though (ILL POST ON THE ANNOUNCEMENTS PAGE), then assume the review is still in the same place at the same time. I am unable to stay after class tomorrow as well. Larry Olson

Larry did u get the room if not then can we ask you questions over the weekend about finals
Is the finals comprehensive or only the stuff from after midterm2?

Heck yeah man! I eat dinner at 7 and drink myself stupid till 10!
Can I come?

Looks like the review is on for tonight from 7-10. Sorry y'all but it's better than nothing! Nicole Seekely

Maybe it's just me, but isn't the main coweb page supposed to be locked? I think someone inadvertently added some code at the bottom.
Is the finals comprehensive or only the stuff from after midterm2?
The final is not going to focus on stuff from midterm 1 and 2, but there are big ideas that were mentioned and taught throughout the course with which you should be familiar. So, while it's all "fair game", it will emphasize the things you've learned more recently. It will be a lot like the review. Make sure you understand the code in the review, not just well enough to answer the questions, but well enough to recognize why it would do what it does and how you could change its behavior. As always, everything from lecture, breakout, assignments, and the book are fair game. This exam is a lot like the other exams, but longer. -K.K. Lamberty
If you have specific questions that you would like answered and cannot make the review session, please post the questions on the final exam review. The review will be Friday from 7-10 pm. -kk

dinner and hanging out tonight(last day of classes right?) whos in?
Some people during the review inquired as to whether there would be a homework 6 solution posted on the CoWeb. As soon as I find out whether or not there were any official extensions for homework 6 for anyone, I will post a solution. -Blake O'Hare
We are in the CoC basement room 17 right now (that's the lecture hall to the left of the vending machines), for anyone that wanted to come to the original Saturday review session. We will be here till 7. Please come. I drove here from Woodstock. Gas is expensive. -Blake O'Hare
...only one person came. -_-
ok so our Final is Monday 26th from 11:30-2:20 in the same room and is it somewhat like our Midterms or is it other than taht?- TA's any comments.

Yes, the final is on Monday at 11:30 in the same room and it will be like the other two Midterms. Nicole Seekely

Could one of the TAs please answer the questions? I've been waiting for over 5 hours to check my answers...and some are still unanswered from yesterday...

They have finals too....

I don't have any finals, but I do need to get some last minute grades in (sorry guys). I am currently going through all the unanswered questions and answering the ones I can. PLEASE READ THE TOP OF THE FINAL REVIEW PAGE to see our policy on answering your questions. -Blake O'Hare

That is all until I get more tired and rantful.

Congrats on being done. Hope everyone has a great couple weeks off!
Which day is the final?
Whomever wrote that is really clueless. When can we expect our final grade?
You will probably know what you made in the class by the end of today, unless you have some strange circumstances that you've discussed with us previously. -Blake O'Hare

When and where can we pick up our graded final?
YAY!!! I'm FREE!!!

My final grade is not up on the webwork is it just me or no one's grade is up yet!!

Despite what Blake said, you will not know your final exam grade until your actual final average comes out. Do not expect to see the final exam grade appear in webwork. Sorry. Hope everyone has had fun in the class, I have. Good luck in each of your future endeavours. Larry Olson
When will we know our actual final averages?
Dunno ... it is whenever GaTech normally posts them. Monday of next week I think ... Larry Olson
That recursion problem on the finals, has been bugging me all day... what was the solution for it?

PLEASE POST THE GRADES ON WEBWORK!!!! I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!! I believe everyone feels the way I do....

Yess!!! PLEASE POST GRADES!! Please :(

Sorry guys...you are just gonna have to wait... Lauren Walker

Ok, since Larry said we cannot expect to see our final exam grade posted on webwork, can we come pick it up somewhere? How are we going to find out what we made?

I don't understand the secrecy surrounding our final grades. It's torture!!!
Youll find out your grades when they come out on OSCAR. It is the same way that I do it to get my grades. We all must wait until good ol ma Tech posts them. Thats just the way the system works. Larry Olson

Does anyone else think that the Oxford program has an easier (although more compact) CS course than ours?
What wasn't easy about this course?

um. we go to tech, dear. nothing's exactly "easy".
If I have an 'A' in this class, then it was easy...and by the way, don't call me 'dear'...you ain't my grandmother

When will our grades from the test and our grade in the class be posted on Webwork?

They won't be

Why don't you guys just be nice and post the grades on "accident". WE would ALL love you FOREVER!!!

I don't get why just the final exam grades can't be posted. We can figure out our class grades on our own. Have mercy!! :(
I don't get all this complaining...suck it up!

suck it up???? Why dont you just be nice and post them... I know it can't be that difficult...

You will find out your letter grade for the course when it is published by Georgia Tech. Those should be up by next Tuesday or soon thereafter. Please don't harass the TAs - this is not their decision - it's mine. There are reasons I am taking this route that I am not going to discuss. Sorry. - Monica Sweat

Ok, so we have to wait for our final grade on OSCAR. But no one has answered the question as to when we will find out what we made on the final exam. Can one of the TA's or Monica please, please answer this question?

Letter grades and scores on finals...

I'll post the final exam grades on WebWork once I have turned in the letter grades to the registrar's office. Read on, regarding final exam review and such.

Reviewing your Final

Once you have your letter grade, if it is not what you were expecting, contact me - but please keep reading.

A) If it is an emergency situation because of a scholarship, HOPE, financial aid, getting kicked out of school, or having to re-register for the course immediately, then contact me asap.

B) If you did not get the grade you expected but it is not having an "emergency" impact like those listed above, then please wait until the third week of Fall semester and come get your final exam to see what happened. And heads up (for all classes) GT does have a deadline for letter grade changes: you must deal with any issues over the course grade you receive before the end of the following semester (if you are enrolled). So, you should get your final during Fall semester if you are hoping for a grade change.

CS1315 does not return the finals - they are kept on file. Actually, news flash- good news :) You CAN pick up your final - they will be available for pickup from Mark Guzdial's office Fall semeseter.

Take care! Monica Sweat

See Announcements for more on GT campus CS1315 exam grading and getting your finals.

Oxford folks!

I'm grading the final today (Friday). I'll email grades out this afternoon if I get DSL back in the house, otherwise, I'll email them tomorrow (Saturday) when I next visit the coffee shop to upload Oscar grades. Safe journeys home!
Mark Guzdial
