STUDENT REVIEW OF OXFORD SUM04

The Course-Instructor Opinion Survey (CIOS) system doesn't work for Study Abroad classes, but I'd really like to hear what you thought of how this summer worked – ESPECIALLY as this is the first time we've ever offered a CS course here at Oxford and we'll want to consider how well this one worked before we ever do it again.

I ask if you would, please:

How was the pace of the class?

Was it too rushed? Was it acceptable?

Here is an example answer.

The pace was not a problem. One homework assignment per week plus the exams was a good pace.

The pace was just perfect, hw assignments, the midterm and final were all perfectly placed during the semester.

The pace of the class was perfect considering all of it had to be squeezed into six weeks. You could probably assign more than one homework per week as long as one was moderate compared to the other. For instance, I wouldn't put anything else in the week where you have to make a movie, but you can assign smaller assignments along with others. However, not having to think about class much over the weekend was definitely a necessity.

The pace was just fine, considering the amount of work that had to be sqeezed in.

I thought the pace was fine also. Because of the homeworks given, one a week was ample time to get it done. I do not think you should do more than one because the projects went perfectly along with the curriculum that was taught. We were also given the assignments before hand so if we finished early we could start to look at the next ones which was helpful.

I thought the pace was a little fast but not undoable.

I thought the pace was very reasonable, especially considering the amount of material that needed to be covered.

Do you feel that you learned what you expected or desired?

Do you feel that you learned less than what you might have learned if you took CS1315 on-campus?

Seems like we were exposed to everything that is normally covered in the course. Incorporating the word and powerpoint labs into the exams was a good idea.

I feel I learned all that was the same as available on campus and more in depth as I have gotten more one on one time with my teacher

I don't feel that I learned as much of a variety of things as I would have on campus, however, I feel that what I did learn, I learned well and will remember it because of all of the one on one help. I would rather learn fewer things but know them better than struggling to learn a lot of things to get by for the sake of the test.

I feel like we did learn as much as anyone on campus. The difference being that they did things in smaller steps and we did every main assignment in a week. This was ok though becuase of the size of the class, we could get more attention and therefore learn at a faster pace.

I think we learned the basic ideas that are taught on campus, but I don't think we went into as much detail or spent as much time as we would have on campus. But I definitly learned everything I expected to.

I feel one hundred times more comfortable with a computer than I did in May. I got far more than I expected out of the class.

Did the class fit into a study abroad context?

Did this class make sense for being part of the Oxford program? Did it take advantages of the circumstances of the program (e.g., the tour before, the placement here at Oxford)?

Using media collected during the travel made it more interesting. Questions incorporating Oxford specific issues were good.

It made sense to be in Oxford as using our personal media that we obtained when traveling made the class all the more enjoyable.

I definitely agree that using the media collected from the tour made the class a lot more interesting. However, I don't think it really makes sense to teach CS at Oxford. The equipment provided is nowhere near what we have at Tech so it doesn't really make sense to me to take a CS class away from a place like "Georgia Tech" and teach it in a place where there are only 16 mediocre computers.

I think the class was more enjoyable and interesting as a study Abroad class because you get to use all of your media from the travel portion.

Yes, because the incorporation of using images from the tour made it much easier to have fun doing some of the assignments that might have typically been an annoyance.

How was the teacher?

(Please note that these answers are anonymous.) Was he available enough for your questions? Did he explain things well? Did he seem prepared?

Professor Guzdial was great. He was very accessible and friendly.

Professor Guzdial was exceptional and the best part of the course, he helped in every way that he could whenever he could

Professor Guzdial was awesome! He was available whenever we needed him, including after office hours, came prepared to class, and tried as hard as he could to make even the most boring of CS subjects as entertaining and engaging as possible.

He was awesome!!!! He could not have been there for us more, or been more helpful in class. He understood which assignments we were having problems with and would take the extra time to help us. He explained things very well and was prepared for class, and had prepared some extra time to spend on things that might have been harder for us.

Professor Guzdial, was the most exceptional part of this course. He always explained topics in a way we could understand and was accessible whenever needed for questioning. He made the class fun and interesting, He's the best professor I've ever had.

This is my fourth year at Tech. I have never had any other teacher be as helpful and available. Professor Guzdial was great.

How were the facilities?

Were you able to do your work with the computing and networking facilities provided here?

I used my own laptop and had no problem.

The facilities were as good as they could be and it helped that almost everyone in the class had their own laptops

It was definitely an advantage to have your laptop, however there were other times even for other classes that we needed to use the computers in the lab. They could stand to be updated and there needs to be more than 16. There were over 100 of us and we all had papers due at the same time!

The facilities were O.K. but I would defintly encourage students to take a lap top in the future.

The facilities were fine, but I used my own laptop so I'm really not sure what to think.

How were the materials?

How was the book? How were the slides? Was the CoWeb useful to you?

The slides and book were good resources but the CoWeb was mostly a place to view assignments and announcements. Communication over the CoWeb was not so important due to the daily classes and close contact with the professor.

The book and the slides and the professors lectures were as good at the best they could be

The book and the slides were very helpful. The book was great because Professor Guzdial wrote it and thus could not use the "Well your book explains this one way, but I am going to explain it another way" method. That always confuses students! The book was written exactly like the lecture so it made it easy to understand. I will hold on to the book because it is very useful. Having Guzdial's screen projected onto the wall also helped.

The materials were great, the book was so helpful and explainatory and went along with the slides great!

The coweb made assignments very easy to post, and the book was helpful for the homework and exams.

I really don't think anything needs to be changed.

What should be changed?

If we were to offer CS1315 again at Oxford, what would you recommend changing?

If I had to change one thing, I would get more computers as students in other classes have to use the same computers as the CS students at all times.

Just more computers.

Nothing about the actual course, maybe a bigger lab for people with out lap tops so they could access the computers more easily

What should stay the same?

What worked in this offering of CS1315 at Oxford? As we change things, what should we keep the same?

All the details of the class were handled very well and I believe that this class should most definetely be kept at Oxford for years to come.

PROFESSOR GUZDIAL. Anyone who teaches in a study abroad program needs to be accessible and flexible with time. Professor Guzdial went out of his way to help us.

I think pretty much everything should stay the same. A professor like Professor Guzdial is need to be understanding and so willing to help. Also I would keep the class size down so that everyone is able to get the attention that they need.

Professor Guzdial and his teaching styles.

Finally, should we ever offer CS1315 here at Oxford again?

This was an experiment to teach such a course in this program. Would you recommend it to others?

Yes, the small class made the course much easier than taking it on campus.

Yes, this class should definetely be kept at Oxford, it was one of my decideing factors to even attend the Oxford program, I cant say enough about the privledge to get this course out of the way in 6 weeks and in Oxford!

Yes because I think students will learn CS better this way since they are taken away from the hustle and bustle of normal college life and because they are only taking one other class along with it. I think students were a lot more successful at the study abroad version than the real version. The one on one attention is fabulous!

Yes Definitly!!! I really enjoyed being in the smaller class

Yes, I would recommend anyone going to Oxford to take this class!

Absolutely. It is probably the most useful and fun environment to take a CS class.
