Please, please let us out of class on time or a tad earlier. My next class is right on North Ave. and I have been late everyday. Thanks!

Thanks for using the microphone in class. It really helps.

please give us more extra credit!

please curve or normalize our grades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I second what the smart person wrote above.

Yeah - me too - please......

Why is cs required for for ALL majors? It should be optional for certain majors.

CURVE :)

There has been a great deal of extra credit chances in this class. The class is not curved. The average in the class is currently somewhere in the B range. This is not a low average. CS is required for all majors because it is an important skill to know for any job and any major none excluded. Computers are everywhere and the more you know about them the better off you'll be. Kelly Lyons

YAY!!!!!! no more cs ever :) sorry to hurt the ta's but cs is not meant for everyone

So far the labs have seemed quite reasonable. Still, some of the instruction in class and breakout can be difficult to follow when whatever instructor actually starts programing. I think it would help to keep in my that many people taking 1315 know absolutly nothing about programing and quite little about computers in general. To many of us you are speeking a forign language. Most students at Tech can follow the mathmatical concepts in things like the RGB color system. When you start throwing around computer terms, even things that seem very basic and obvious to you, many students are not exactly sure what you're talking about. Example: If I were to tell you to change the 7th sprocket on my bike, I would think the instruction was clear, but would change the little sprocket or the big one? You have some idea of what you're supposed to do, but you're not certain. This is the kind of confusion and perhaps annoyance that a number of my classmates and I feel. I'm not trying to be harsh or overly critical. I just think it would help if all of the instructors could keep this in mind.

thanks for the feedback; I can believe that I probably use too many technical terms. I'll try to be more careful. If the folks in my sections can please yell when I do that, I won't be offended, and I'm sure it will help everyone in class. – Blair

I think that we are starting to go too fast. I am having a hard time keeping up with lecture and the reading. I would really like it if we could slow things down?

A lot of students are probably on the same page as you. During this part of the term, the material starts to get a little more complicated. As always, in breakout or lecture, if you feel like you want the instructor to spend more time on a topic, let them know. You may also want to take advantage of the TAs office hours. They are always underutilized, and would be happy to help you out. Greg Leo

These past two weeks we have had a quiz, lab, homework, and exam, this coupled with the fact that alot of classes give pre-break exams adds up to a good bit of work. I would say too much.

At least not as too much as other CS classes!!

Maybe it's just me.. but this week's breakout session on HTML said it was going to focus on XHTML... and it really didn't. It didn't explain the different levels of XHTML(and their different DOCTYPES). HTML is something from the old days of the web, and XHTML is preparing for the future of the web, so focusing on XHTML is the right idea, but just saying you're going to do it and not do it is something really hypocritical to me. For example, in "The Simplest Web Page"- it declares a HTML 4.01 DOCTYPE. Why not a XHTML DOCTYPE? If you really want to get down to it.. at least show what valid XHTML is and how to code it. Elements like font and attributes like color and size aren't even defined in XHTML, so why use them?

technically speaking - nothing is anonymous here, not via this medium...all is traceable, all is logged SOMEWHERE...lol.
Yes and no. All page edits are tracked by "IP" (Internet address). You can see these in the Changes and History pages. But that doesn't mean that we can track an IP to a person. In most cases, we cannot. Mark Guzdial

I thought that lab3 was the most frustrating thing we've done yet. I feel like the instructions could've been better...i.e. there were some pronoun reference errors in problem 6 that made things really confusing.
Thanks for the feedback on lab 3. I promise that we'll work on it. Lauren Biddle (okay, so I'm really not anonymous at all. but you can still be.)
I want to suggest a possible answer to Mr. Guzdial's question as to why people don't come to class. I used to come to every class, print out the slides before hand, and take notes. This has not been an easy class for me as my mind doesn't really work this way, so I have had to put alot of effort forth (more than most) to do well. In one class I asked a question and was yelled at and embaressed because my question had been covered in the previous class. I received a glare and a "Well, if you had been here last time you wouldn't be asking that." I had been at the previous class and had simply not understood the application of what was being explained. I think the purpose of going to class is to be able to question what you don't understand. A professor can not expect a student to understand concepts as they apply to everything just because he has explained it. If students do not feel comfortable asking questions in class they will not come.

I'm sure that I did do that as you say, and I apologize for it. That was inconsiderate of me. Mark Guzdial

I would like to request that all changes to labs and other assignments posted on CoWeb be made more than two days in advance of the due date of the assignment. I printed the instructions for the Power Point lab last weekend, finished it, and submitted my assignment on Wednesday afternoon. Today(Friday) in class I was informed by a friend that another part was added to the lab(writing about the lab in JES). I was completely unaware of this and had to rush back to my room after class to complete the assignment. I consulted my print-out and found that it was in fact different from the current webpage. I would just like for the final assignment to posted sooner so those of us who have time to work on it earlier in the week do not have to worry about losing points because details of the assignment have suddenly been changed.

"INTERNET!"

I think that this class would be far more effective if it were taught in a computer lab. Sitting in a lecture hall listening to a professor speak about the finer points of writing code is not very interesting or helpful.

I completely agree! If only we could get a lab! The College of Computing doesn't have the space. Mark Guzdial

LAB 5 had such unclear directions that I spend half of the time trying to interpret what they were instead of actually learning about Excel...please, for next semester's class's sake, work on clarity of directions on labs and homeworks!!!!!!

If the college of computing doesnt have the space they shouldn't offer the class

if you can't do something the right way is it really worth doing?...alos, how i feel about my homework, labs, etc. ;)

If you're not willing to make a few mistakes, you're not going to learn much! Do you really want CS1315 to disappear and let CS1321 and CS1371 be the only options for graduating from Tech? Mark Guzdial

You say that we should be able to explain the code that we write line by line. Why doesn't the book have the code written and then next to it have the explination?

That's a good suggestion. I'm hoping to add some of that in the next round of the book. Mark Guzdial

So yeah, I just love how we can't dispute grades after Monday when we won't necesarily have all of our grades until Wednesday... What happens when my ta accidently hits just 9 instead of 92? I personally thought it was dumb that everything got moved back for the game. I mean, if you're going to San Antonio, you should still realize you're going to have classwork to do and plan accordingly. And if you wanted a good reason to move stuff back, how about Easter, which is a family time? Anyway, the point of this is that grade dispute should be open until Thursday since we won't get grades until Wednesday.

Ryan, Chris, Ashley, Greg, Dannon, Brienne, and Summer are all wonderfully helpful. Thanks so much for your willingness to take time out of your day. You guys have all helped me out so much and I know I'm not the only one. Special HUGE thanks to Guzdial, who has helped me pass this course and made things as simple as pie. Forget all the whining and groaning you've heard all this semester and know that you've seriously helped out a never-been-exposed-to-anything-cs-related-first year...and I'm not the only one. :o)

I was really scared coming into this class....its not as bad as I thought.Could be worse I guess.

This class is pretty interesting. However, things are really hard when sometimes I think they shouldn't be. This homework2 should not have been as hard as it was made out to be. Clearer explanations can help- and encouragement. :) Overall I was really happy with my midterm though!!!

I really think that the labs could be made more interesting in some way. They just seem to me to be busy work. I don't think that busy work is necessary in this type of class. I really don't think that there isn't anyone who hasn't used these programs before. Also I think that the TAs are grading the labs too hard. The instructions for them are not very clear and could be intepreted in different ways.

I agree. In most classes, my grades for labs are usually better than my grades for homework. In this class, it's the exact opposite. It's not that I don't know how to use these programs (I've had turn turn something in for a class with every one of them, and can use them well), it's that I can't figure out the ambiguous directions. There are dozens of ways to interpret the directions. I've tried asking for help with the TA's, but I still don't get any clarity. I would guess that the only reason my homework grades are higher are because the directions for them are CLEAR!
