Spring 2004 Soapbox

This is YOUR platform! Tell us what you think!

Last term's Soapbox is at Fall 2003 Soapbox.

Put your comments at the bottom separated by underscores. The bottommost phrase, comment, issues shows up on every page.

Soapbox rules! Good luck in 1315!

Love the new layout!

Are we supposed to post our favorite movie/gt account#/name for lab 1
on the fall 2003 page or is a new page going to be created for spring 2004?
(Monty replies): A new page will be created.

For those just coming into this class - I had it last semester and I can honestly say that it is really worth putting some time into (i.e. going to class and spending time understanding the
programs). I've been using JES over the break to build web pages and edit photos - which is fun - but more importantly - it has saved me tons of time. This class gives you tools you can actually use. Stick with it, seriously, and best of luck!

does that imply you are repeating the class?

I'm another student from last semester, (who's on the coweb to get the address of the webpage I made). Anyway, this course is one of the best offered at this school. Fulfilling the CS requirement is no longer about struggle, failure and fostering a hyper-competitive attitude. After 1315, computers make much more sense and I feel one hundred percent comfortable programming. It truly is well worth whatever effort you choose to put in it.

(I copied the great conversation about the class to the Comments for Week of Jan. 5, 2004 page – it was getting too big to appear on every page! Mark Guzdial)
Q: What do you call a Python?
A: The Full Monty

Does anyone else feel like they're in COA 1060 again?????
Don't know – was never in COA 1060. What is it?
the most unorganized and rambling lectures ever, except this might be even worse because we have no clue what he's talking about!
Was in 1060...this will be much better.
Yeah, but they take attendance - signing in & leaving was the best part of COA 1060

Is the syllabus online somewhere?
Yeah, and it also shows when you delete people's posts. Tracks those too.

What? WHAT? Make sure you name it like this, but do it like this and the program won't run. But also if you assign that name to this and someone’s brain explodes trying to figure this stuff out. It seems simple enough, but there is not enough emphasis as to why certain things are significant. Lecturers, you’re not explaining thoroughly enough for a lot of us to understand!

Great comments! But long discussions probably belong on the Comments page, rather than appearing at the top of every page...

The silence is deafening...

Come to Bridgetown http://www.lunarmagazine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6004

"It is easier to write an incorrect program than understand a correct one."
"If a listener nods his head when you're explaining your program, wake him up."
"The 11th commandment was "Thou Shalt Compute" or "Thou Shalt Not Compute" - I forget which."
"Perhaps if we wrote programs from childhood on, as s we'd be able to read them."
"It goes against the grain of modern education to teach children to program. What fun is there in making plans, acquiring discipline in organizing thoughts, devoting attention to detail and learning to be self-critical?"

This my be a stupid statement, but after completing lab 2 i'm left wondering; If you didn't know how to use MS Word, how did you get into Tech or stay in last semester?

The point was to become more proficient in word. I can say with a great amount of certainty that just about everyone at Tech can get around Word at least enough to write a paper, do some formatting and maybe change font, size, style, etc. However, there are some things to learn from the lab. I am sure not everyone knew how to create and resize a text-box, or add a footer. Don't be insulted by this lab though... 1321... even 1321x does a similar lab. I assume it is an attempt to "get everyone on the same level" when it comes to working in Word. More challenging (and interesting) labs and homeworks will come ;) . Student549

Ok, I was just curious, I have lecture with Collin Potts every Monday and Friday. I also have Mark Guzdial as my recitation teacher on Thursday. However, I have never met my TA, Jennifer Grabowski. Am I suppost to meet her somewhere? Is she in Colin Potts lecture? Should she be the one teaching me in recitation? My schedule says that my "lecture" class on Thursday is with Mark Guzdial in the Instructional Center in Room 109. Should I be worried? Because when I turned in Lab2 it went under her name, and I have never heard of her before.

She's what's called your "Breakout TA". She will be at your Breakout sessions to answer questions (along with Dr. Guzdial), and she will also be holding office hours and grading your Homeworks. You will also have a second "Grading TA" who will be grading everything else, and probably also having Office Hours.

Having unusual problems at the very end of lab 2: does anyone know how/why the 'writeto' command is not properly writing to the location? it is giving me the error: "an error occurred attempting to pass an
On another note, have a wonderful Spring Break. Have fun and be safe : )

Whoa!... it's a snake.

so what is the login and password for attaching pix, etc?

you're kidding, right??? go to the FAQ...

why do i keep getting "FORBIDDEN" messages when I am loading my webpage up to the coweb!!!!!!!!!!

I also have been receiving messages that say "FORBIDDEN" on them, and I clearly followed the instructions. Is CoWeb having issues since it was down for so long yesterday and this morning?
If you are getting this message still (which you should not be), then you need to contact your TA's immediately!!! Ashley Coker

Announcement: No office hours at Starbucks today. Instead I'll be there after breakouts tomorrow (3:30-4:30, Wednesday). Colin Potts

how come my pictures are not showing up on my webpage?

Try making sure the file names match exactly those in the code. example "MyPic.JPEG" not "MyPic.jpeg". The JPEG is case sensitive.
Point 1: Wouldn't it normally be ".JPG" or ".jpg" (i.e., 3-letter extensions)?

Point 2: That issue is a red herring anyway – my pictures will not show up on my Who's Who page or my Lab 4 .htm page. In other words, it's not merely an issue of students typing incorrectly-cased references in their HTML, whether that even matters or not.

And I'm not the only one having this problem.

I've moved the not-showing-up-pictures discussion to Comments for Week of March 15, 2004

Is there a reason that according to webwork, 58 people got a 0 on the take home exam, and 153 people got a 0 on quiz 2, including myself!?! I know i did both of those.
Write your TA! I'm encouraging them to get the grading done. If you do it, too, maybe it'll get done! Mark Guzdial
Also, if youre in Sections A7,B7, you were special and I graded your TakeHomes. They are now posted. If you have grade issues, come see me or email me. Student189

Will someone please check the homework 4 questions, please?

Please try and remember to use <code> YOUR CODE HERE </code> to enclose your code; it fixes all the formatting issues. Student1017

HW4 isn't that hard! It's just different...

My office hours March 22nd and 24th from 11:30-12:30 will be in Tech Square Undergrad Lab. Stephanie Weitzel

HW4 isn't that hard! It's just different...

Wouldn't it be great if the mid-term were pushed back to Monday...that way would would have a week to ask questions in breakout and such...wouldn't that be great??

Moved the midterm discussion to Comments for Week of March 15, 2004.
Midterm is this Friday. It's not changing.

Our TAs are ever so wonderful ; )
Yes they are. All the people complaining about HW 4 obviously didn't contact their TAs. My TA helped me work through the mistakes I had made. TAs are your friends...fish are friends, not food

The TAs are fantastic! Is there any way that we could let them know that at a possible TA led midterm review (hint)?! :) I know I would love to have a review. And every seat was filled at the last one!

Please make it before Thursday night though :)

Please have a review session. I don't even care if it is Thursday night. Thanks

Moved the TAs-PLEASE-OFFER-A-REVIEW-SESSION discussion to . (Don't have conversations in the Soapbox, please.)

Lab 5 turnin should be up now. If it isnt, post on the questions page and email me.
ALSO
Two Midterm 2 review sessions will take place. The first one is Wednesday night (3.24.2004) at 8:00PM in Physics L2. The second one is Thursday night (3.25.2004) at 8:30PM in the same room. Student189
Are we to assume both of these review sessions are going to be EXACTLY the same, or would it be in our best interest to go to both?
They will cover the same material (the midterm exam review) but are almost certain to do it in very different ways. If you go the first night and find yourself lost, then maybe you should consider going the second night for a sligthtly different perspective... Student189

There is an error in LAB 5 in problem 7 we had you calculate variance by hand using a formula for population variance, SUM(I2:I328)/327 then we had you use the excel function VAR which calculates SAMPLE variance. That has now been changed. The correct problem 7 will have you using VARP which is excel's built in population variance formula. We will accept both answers(the one using VAR() and VARP() as correct. However go back and use VARP() and youll notice something. Student189

Would one of the TA's PLEASE give feedback on some of the last few questions of the review?? Mainly Reverse a File and Re-splicing the Splice. Thanks!

Guys, if you have ANY questions, I would suggest iming a TA...they really are willing to help and they were awesome and answering any questions I had!! Plus, one of them is bound to be online at any reasonable hour...

All the TA's who helped out at today's and yesterday's review session were very helpful. You're all awesome!

Do we need calculators for the test? If so does it matter if we only have a graphing calculator?

Anybody else up at 4:38 AM studying for the midterm? Hissss...

Up at 5:09 AM . . . 5:28 AM . . .
You may bring calculators, if you'd like. You won't need them. Mark Guzdial

Good luck everyone!

Take-Home 2 looks fuuuuuuun :(

Lab 5 can kiss my ass

three words: Clarify The Directions

This Excel lab is just a tad bit too tedious

LAB 5 CAN KISS MY ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are we allowed to say AError: this should not happen on the coweb?

when something is due, is it due on the day at 5p or at midnight?

5 pm of the day it is due

I've permanently changed the location of my office hours. Now they are Monday and Wednesday 2-3 in the commons area on the second floor of the psychology (Coon) building. Stephanie Weitzel

Want to TA for CS1315? See Announcements
It would be nice if someone addressed the questions on lab 5. The unanswered ones have been up since last night

Have a great Monday!

You know, i haven't complain much this year, but this lab is so irrelevant it is retarded. I'm not learning much and even when i do i forget it the next instance because i will never use this again. That's what my future secretary is for!

Thank God for homestar.

Amen!

How bout them jackets??? :) :) :)
When you say final four, you say it all!

FYI - Even if you wanted to TA for this class in the Summer or Fall, you aren't able to apply because the site isn't allowing anyone to.
I'm sorry about that. I was told that they just fixed the problem today. Please do apply! Mark Guzdial
Can we go to the info. session before we apply? When are the applications due?
They're due April 15, so yes, you can go to the info session first.
Will our tests be available for pick up on Friday?

What comes after CS1315?

President Clough has asked all faculty to consider the NCAA Tournament in scheduling examinations. Based on his request, Take Home Exam #2 is now due Wednesday April 7 at noon. I've pushed off the HW5 and HW6 deadlines to Monday (from Friday) to give time for those. Mark Guzdial

Woo hoo!

Go Jackets!!!
-Matt Swanburg

Haha... how big can this bubble get?

What if we keep adding random comments to it? Sounds fun to me...

Who's ready to kick some UConn bootay?

I, personally, am going to win the game. Im sorry GT and UC fans, i am the champion.

Can I just say those refs were HORRIBLE

seriously...darn the refs to Hades. It was a great season though! Thanks Jackets!!

The overly-long discussion has been moved to Comments for Week of April 5, 2004

The take home exam sucks! It sucks when 1 line prevents the program from running!!!!!!!!!!!...namely, the writePictureTo line

No it doesn't! It's a matter of minutes if you understood Homework 4 completely.

Only took me around 20 minutes to complete. Thanks Eris! Fnord.
Eggs Benedict

When can we expect to get Test 2 back???
In the 2 pm lecture, the tests were given back on Monday. All of the 15 people that were there got their tests back. Otherwise, you can pick your test up outside Mark Guzdial's office. Ashley Coker

Well thats great....Except I'm in the 12pm lecture, and I WAS there on Monday, and we didn't get them back. I really do not want to have to go to Tech Square to go get my test. Can we get them on Friday, for those of us who go?

Discussion copied (with responses) at Comments for Week of April 5, 2004

Guzdial said the prequiz would be uploaded for those going out of town. Can this be done soon?

Just kidding, they're on the Announcements page.

Do we get to drop our lowest grade in something?
WHAT DO I READ FROM TEXT TO BE PREPARED FOR QUIZ3?
Can you PLEASE postpone hw5, in light of having to do the prequiz, and study for the quiz, ontop of the mounds of other work we have this week, since professors are trying to get everything done before dead week!!!

The deadlines for HW5 and the quiz are not changing.

What's the syllabus for the quiz? Thanks.

Most of the answers aren't in the book, check lecture notes.

Actually, I don't know what book your reading, because I found most of the answers in the book

Im reading the Adventures of Clifford. Hes a big red dog.
>I have a friend named Clifford!! ;)

Well I'm watching "Powered by The Cheat." He's a little yellow....thing.

"StrongBaaaaaadia.... Population Tiiiiiiirrrrre!!"

Office hours from 2:30-3:30 in Tech Square 423f today. Stephanie Weitzel

"And out poured a lifetime supply of fish sticks...and a the Cheat!
'Yay, my very own the Cheat!' " Student939

If we already turned in our movie, can we turn it in again, if we made a revision?

I can't believe TA's arent getting paid next semester, otherwise I would apply. Now instead I'm going to watch Star Trek (Deep Space 9 to be exact), then go to best buy and place my credit card on the magnetized mat that says "Do not place credit cards here" and laugh in their faces while enjoying their astonishment. Now I'm out, like the fat kid in dodgeball.
Student1189

You people...

I am in love with the TA Student117. Call me for incriminating photos.

Okay, so I turned in hw5 last night, but I found an error, and so I turned it in again this afternoon. Does the latest submission overwrite the previous? I checked the turnin verification, and it shows 2 turnins for me.
That has only been answered about 67 times this semester
SO THANKYOU FOR MAKING IT 68

at what time was hw5 due today?
5 pm
do late submissions receive any credit?
No!!

When will the exam and the lab be graded?

I believe it has been made pretty clear that we try and grade labs within 1 week, and take-homes within 2.

Well, I think that's kinda the point - I know we still have another week before we should expect our take-home exam, but the fifth (and final) lab was due over two weeks ago.

My lab 5 is MIA...

My Lab 5 grade is up . . . .

What percentage of our overall average is the comprehensive final?
Grading Policy
The grading policy doesn't give a breakdown b/w midterms and final!

These chicks don't even know the name of my band

Is it... REMOVEDs Law?

This is just a guess, but are the the 2 midterms each worth 10%, and the final is worth 15%. I assume it is this since all 3 together are worth 35%.

If more people want to put their movies up at Spring 2004 HW5 Movies, please do! Alexandra's is really fun!

Office hour tomorrow in Tech Square 423f at 2:15. Stephanie Weitzel

So does it matter what we name the main function of hw6? I already turned my hw in and there was no specifics given on that? Usually you tell us what to call it, like "linksPage" or something.
The assignment clearly says "You are to write a function (named "hw6") that will input a directory as a string..." What's the confusion about?
haha, owned

Office hours tomorrow at 423f from 2:15 to 3:15PM. Stephanie Weitzel
Would someone pretty please tell me whether we will be having a review session or not so that I can otherwise schedule to meet with a TA as much as possible? Thanks!

We will be having a review- Monday evening, 6:00. Student117
Location: Room 17 CoC Building
Go to http://www.cc.gatech.edu/dvfx/videos/dvfx2004.html and see what the McGarty TA's have been up to...
Is there anyway there can be another review session, in case some of us have a final at the same time or we do not want to wait until the last minute for help?

Are you serious...the TA's don't have to hold a revew session, they have decided to do so to help the students out and now you complain about the day and/or time of the review! —-for shizzle!

fo shizzle my nizzle foo! the TA's seem to have a lot on their plate right now, just as we all do... In fact I believe that the student's request is legit, so why don't you gripe on someone elses time.

Actually, I did not complain. I simply asked if there was anyway to arrange for an alternate time, which is not outlandish since they held two for the last midterm. I appreciate the TA's greatly. Thanks for having too much free time on your hands to respond to me though.

Would you please notify us up here anytime there have been additions to the Final Review? thnxs
You can find that out by clicking on the changes link.

What room do we take the final in? Same one as our lecture?
How much is the final exam worth? 15% of our grade?
Two in-class midterm exams and one final (35%)
that still doesn't answer my question! what's the final worth? 15% or 11.67%?

Copied to Comments for Week of April 19, 2004
DO NOT FORGET YOUR PHOTO IDs FOR THE FINAL EXAM!!! Buzz card or driver's license is fine.

Would someone please tell me which room the final exam is in? Thanks!

Good luck everybody!!
The exam IS at 8:00am, isn't it?

Yay! I'm finished!

The final counts for 15% doesn't it?
Since I am really sick of seeing this question: You take the 3 exams and add up their total e.g. (85, 87, 83) then divide by 3, (85), than take that number and multiply by .35, so (85.35) = 29.75 out of possible 35 points of final grade.

That TickerTape problem was ridiculous (would u like some cheese with that wine)!!!!

It was only ridiculous if you copied and pasted instead of really understanding the last homework.

I don't know about anyoone else, but I thought the final was ridiculously easy...?

The final was fair. It definately wasn't hard. Nor would it have been easy to someone who did not study a whole lot for whatever reason. thank you to all the TAs, Profs, and MOST OF ALL MARK GUZDIAL, I have NEVER been in a class that someone spent so much of their time helping people understand stuff that was almost STRAIGHT from the book he wrote.

Thank you Lauren and Summer for your time during the review session. Without you, I have not been able to finish the exam in half an hour. Thanx and have a wonderful summer!

CS 1315 is already coming in handy :) For a position I'm interviewing for, I have to know how to use Excel for data entry, and without that lab, I wouldnt know a thing :)

When will we be receiving our grade?
They are up!! Congrats everyone on being done!!! Ashley Coker

Thanks for a really good, and actually kinda fun course prof Guzdial, I dreaded takin CS for 2 years, but it turned out to be real useful. Also, if I wanted to take my webpage that we made for lab 4, and attach it to my AIM sn, how would I go about doing that? If I am supposed to know how to do this by now, I am sorry, but I am so tired, I cannot think
Holy cow, I made a 101.7 in this class! WOW! God bless you TAs, Profs, and CS 1315. XOXOXOXO
