Karin Bowman

Hypertext existed before the Web. What is it, outside of the Internet? What does ISP stand for? Mark Guzdial

internet service provider Karin Bowman

Karin, can you expand on your definition of the Internet, i.e. what different issues did it help to standardize? Stephanie Weitzel

Internet-A network of networks, based on a specific set of protocols for addressing computers, communicating between computers, and routing packets of information. Is this right/specific enough? Jennifer Blake

hypertext is non-linear text used to capture flows of thought. It existed before computers but was too difficult to implement until the computer came along.

domain name servers are the parts of the network that keep track of names such as "www.cnn.com" and map them to addresses "64.236.24.20". It converts IP addresses into the website names that we are familiar with

http: hypertext transfer protocol- defines how messages are formatted, transmitted, and what actions that web browsers should take in response to the commands it is given, the underlying protocol of the WWW.
ftp: file transfer protocol- used for exchanging files
smtp: simple mail transfer protocol- used for sending email

HyperText: a special type of database system where objects (programs, pictures, music) can be linked to one another

client: an application that runs on a personal commputer, that relies on a server to perform operations (outlook express)
server: a computer on a network that manages network resources

internet: global network connecting millions of computers
WWW is not the same as the INTERNET

ISP: Internet Service Provider. A company that provides access to the internet. (America Online, Bellsouth, Earthlink)

Domain Name Server: an internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses

Knowing how to manipulate text helps when manipulating/gathering/created information on the internet because the entire internet is made up of text. Everything you see has textual code that created it.

Susan Kommeth

Good definitions Susan. Steph Weitzel

the internet helped the copying/printing of files from one computer to another...is that what you mean by the issues it helped standardize? Karin Bowman

Stick to your earlier definition, Karin. I think that what Steph's after is that the Internet is based on a set of standards, agreements about how everyone will do things. Mark Guzdial

internet = the inner net of a bathing suit
example: "I just logged onto my internet."

Al Gore invented the internet. Thanks
