Music Reviews

What's that you're humming?

Travis - 12 Memories. The fourth album from the Scottish band, Travis. This one, released in the US in October 2003, stands apart from their previous releases being a lot darker, lyrics are deep into the political landscape of last winter, many of the songs were written right before the invasion of Iraq. Fran Healy, the lead-singer puts so much emotion into the songs on the album and the songs are both sad and upbeat at the same time. Check out the singles Re-Offender, The Beautiful Occupation, and Love Will Come Through. John Lindsey

Doves - Last Broadcast. Doves are a British band with a very broad range of sounds, but mostly staying in the britpop or experimental realms. Similar to Radiohead, more upbeat, and in my opinion, a better singer. Check out the songs Words, Pounding, and of course, Last Broadcast. Also, I'm not really sure if Last Broadcast is their latest album, or if their latest was Lost Souls, either way, both are really great and I found them at Best Buy for under $15 each. John Lindsey

Dave Matthews Band

Metallica all the way!

Master of Puppets comes to mind. Metallica rules all!!!
Other bands which are pretty good for people who like things heavy are Down, Corrosion of Conformity, Black Label Society, Ozzy's solo stuff, Pantera, and Black Sabbath. In terms of rock and acoustic varieties I really dig Chuck Berry, Aerosmith, Pride and Glory, Skynyrd, Zakk Wylde's "Book of Shadows," Guns 'N Roses, and Led Zepplin.

Paul Oakenfold rules!

Norah Jones.....very Billie Holliday-ish. I love it!

Sorry people, but Incubus takes the cake. I just hope the new CD is still awesome even with their new bassist.

Opeth.

Ryan Adams' new cds are all good. particularly Rock n Rock and Love is Hell Vol 2. "Rock n Roll" sounds like its title suggests and is much like a tribute to Adams' influences. Traces of Morrisey, U2, Nirvana, and the Rolling Stones are easily heard. For the most part its a solid album that shows a different side of Ryan Adams, as if there weren't enough already. Jonathan Baker

K's Choice rocks. I guess it falls under "girl rock" but you should try them out. "Wait"

Check out Serart...One of the members of System of A Down is part of the group...Lots of "international" folk-type music, with a darker rock-like twist. Expect tribal chants, indigenous drums, mixed with swooping ambient techno and various modern sound bites.
Jaron Hendrix

Kings of Leon - Youth and Young Manhood
Great "southern" rock. Lots of guitar, vocals that sound a little bit like the Strokes / White Stripes, but not as whiny or introverted. Jaron Hendrix

Modest Mouse : Good News For People Who Love Bad News
Ryan Adams : Rock N Roll, Love Is Hell
Pedro the Lion : old and new
The Shins : Chutes Too Narrow
The Hiss : Panic Movement
Micah J McLain

My Chemical Romance is a good band, and Atreyu's second album is better than their first 'cos it's more metal

Hands down: Radiohead is the best today...
