Ive been trying to post my movie selections for this first assignment, but every time i do it...edit option has been locked...?
If I want to configurate Eudora for Windows, and my email address is gtg###@mail.gatech.edu, do I have to change it to gtg###@prism.gatech.edu?
Along those same lines, when i send email, it gives my name instead of my gt#, do i need to go resend the email or is it cool as is?
You only see it as just your name. The recipient should be getting both your name and your gt#. Mark Guzdial
Hey, it's Lab 1, and I am already here... I was just wondering if for Part 1 I had to do much of anything if I am already using my prism account and that is it. Am I really just supposed to send an email? No other account attached?
Right. Some folks haven't played with email yet, and we need to get everyone up to speed. If you're email-savvy already, COOL! Mark Guzdial
I sent the email through Eudora and it couldn't send because it said cs1315@cc.gatech.edu does not exist.
I keep getting errors for trying to set up an outlook account to access gt webmail...something with the server? has this happened to anyone else?
What errors? What is the actual error message? Mark Gudzial
What is the password to edia the Who's Who page? I have my name twice, and I need to delete one of them! catherine ann sistrunk
That's okay, Catherine. Just leave it. (Folks have been accidentally deleting others' names. Let's leave it locked for now.) Mark Guzdial
What is the password for The Who's Who page; i can't put my link up there.
Every time I try to save, I get an error that the save failed and that i need to contact the administrato to clear the lock. Can you help me?
I tried to type in my name and account # and movie, but the page is locked. how am i supposed to complete the assignment?
I sent the email using outlook express and I couldn't send it because it also said that cs1315@cc.gatech.edu does not exist. I'm confused.
can you guys unlock the page so we can finish the assignment?
what is the deal with the lock, who am i the key master?
i am having the same problem with posting my favorite movie as well, everytime i hit save it is telling me to contact administrator to clear lock.
Listen, i dont have time for this, can we make an easy assignment any more frustrating?
Does anyone run redhat 9 here? What do I need to install for this class?
There is no need to unlock the Who's Who page. Simply type *your name* into the box at the bottom, and click "Add to this page." Follow the directions on the page. That's it! DO NOT TRY TO EDIT THE PAGE!. We locked the page because people kept deleting each others' names. It should work just fine. Mark Guzdial
cs1315@cc.gatech.edu does exist – it works just fine. Mark Guzdial
To anyone having an edit problem with the Who's Who page, check the instructions at the top of the page. I just followed them and created a page. Larry Olson
So we don't have to do a collage for Friday, right? Just the emails and stuff.
Where does it say on the labs where they're due? That would be helpful information. Thanks!
The syllabus page: http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/cs1315/910 lists all the due dates of everything, and it's where the lecture slides and topics can be found. Everything is due by 5:00 pm on the due date. Summer McWilliams
so if the email add that you gave us does exist, what is wrong with my outlook express that it won't send it to you?
How do I go about adding my name and favorite movie to the lab 1 post?
I somehow made two links to my name on the who's who page...is there anyway to delete one of the links from the page? Thanks
Matt Nichols
After Lab 1 is finished and the crunch is over, I'll unlock the page. Mark Guzdial
I am getting ready to download the zone alarm, but two options come up
1.ZoneAlarmDocumentation.zip that has the type ZIP Archive and 2.zaid4.exe (that says it is Windows Executable type)
Which one do I download or is it both? Adriane Esteban
I am getting an error when trying to email the cs1315@cc.gatech.edu email address. Here is the body of the email i recieve in response:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
'cs1315@cc.gatech.edu' on 1/9/2004 4:12 PM
554 : Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied
Any suggestions? Thanks!
I suspect that this means you are attempting to send mail from an off-campus computer; the prism machines do not allow off-campus machines to send email to any email address EXCEPT a prism account (cs1315@cc.gatech.edu is an account in the College of Computing). That is what "Relay"ing means; it is typically disallowed because, if it was allowed, spammers could use the prism mail machine to send spam that looked like it came from Tech.
I can't get to the OIT FAQ pages for how to set up your email right now (they are linked off the lab page, but my browser cannot get to them – I'm not sure why, perhaps the OIT machines are down right now). So, I can't tell you exactly how to fix this. But, when you go to those pages, you need to look up how to change your SMTP port to use SSL (or perhaps they call it SSH) and which port they want you to use (it's a number in the 400's or 500's, not 25). Telling your mailer to use SSL will let it use your email address and password to authenticate your outgoing mail, the same way it uses your email and password to download your incoming mail. Blair MacIntyre
Alternatively, contact your ISP and figure out what is the right server for your Internet Service Provider. For example, I use Mindspring at home, so my SMTP mailserver is mail.mindspring.com. That will allow me to send to anyone I want, through Mindspring. Mark Guzdial
Ahh! I'm in such a bad position: I got scheduled (at work) over my lab time, so I don't know which TA I have. Also, this website was down when I tried to get on (early Friday morning - being the only time that I was free this week) to complete the assignment. :(
My lab time is 1:30-3 PM Thursdays and Oscar says that my TA is "Monica Sweat", which is not on the list of TA's. Someone help me!
Monica (sweat@cc.gatech.edu) is the instructor for the lab (breakout session). She should know who your TA is. Blair MacIntyre
TA's haven't been assigned to sections yet. Contact Monica or your lecture instructor about an extension due the CoWeb being down. Mark Guzdial
I changed my recitation time, so now I have a different TA but my lab is coming up in my old TA's page? Amanda Cook

How come when I copy and paste the part of the lab that I am supposed to paste it gives me an error?? I am getting this error, and I cannot figure out what it means.
example1()
load image failed.
Was unable to load the image in C:\JES\mediasources\Barbara.jpg
Make sure it's a valid image file.
show(picture): Input is not a picture
An error occurred attempting to pass an argument to a function.
Please check line 4 of C:\Documents and Settings\Me\My Documents\Computer Science\Labs\Lab 2\Example 1
The file in mediasources is actually named barbara.jpg. Larry Olson
when is lab 2 due??
oop, nevermind, due friday. thx though.
FYI, The labs are always due by 5pm on the Friday of the week they are assigned. Kelly Farrell
Does our file path need to be in the order that it is presented in the lab? Or, is it okay to have a file path that leads from the desktop?
It's okay to have the path wherever it works. Mark Guzdial
I got a similar error to the one above, only mine does have barbara lowercase.:
load image failed.
Was unable to load the image in C:\\JES\\MediaSources\\barbara.jpg
Make sure it's a valid image file.
show(picture): Input is not a picture
An error occurred attempting to pass an argument to a function.
Please check line 6 of C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\lab2a.py
You need to update your Java – see the FAQ page. The Java that you have installed is old, so it can't read in images. Mark Guzdial
There is a difference between the assignments 2b on the website. If you click on the "here" link right before the end of lab 2a you get a different check list of what it takes to be complete.
Use the longer list(one with the extra page break and the picture). However, the link should be good now Larry Olson
My JES version won't allow me to set up the email server. Under the turnin tab there are assignments and register instead of settings.
JES doesn't use an email server. You only need to put your GT number and Name in the register window. More detailed instructions are in Lab: Running a program in JES. Adam Wilson
When I try to turn in Lab 2 I get this message. An unexpected error has occurred in the turnin process. It is likely that the program turnin has failed. Please check JES's settings and resubmit the assignment. I checked my name and gt number in the register section of JES. Need some help. Thanks.
If your info is entered correctly and you are following the turnin process corretly I'm not sure what your problem must be...I'm not sure that the Coweb has been set for turnin to specific TA's yet, so that may be the problem (and it will be fixed soon). But, if later in the week you still have this problem you can go to the Turnin Verification Page http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/cs1315turnin and under your TA and assignment you can upload the assignment (use the attach button at the top of the page)to where it needs to be. Summer McWilliams
For lab 2 I used a different picture than barbara.jpg because I do not yet have the CD containing those images. I was wondering if that is okay.
Mediasources is avalible on the Coweb link that is labeled Course Software (JES). I would reccomend that you download that file, and barbara.jpg is on it. Summer McWilliams
There is no prompt for me to enter my username or anything when i start JES, like the instructions say there will be. Also, there is nothing that pops up to read...?
Sounds like you have already run JES once on this machine. To setup your user name and what not Open JES and goto the "turnin" menu and select "register". To see the popup greeting goto "Help" and then "about JES" (the about isnt exatly the same as the welcome but it is close enough). Larry Olson
I have Windows 98, and when I try to open JES, nothing happens. I have even tried to click on the jes.console, and nothing happens. What do I need to do?
You probably need java. Check the FAQ page for how to get Java Larry Olson
Java comes with JES, so I don't think that you need to install it. My guess is that you may not have enough memory, or your operating system is too old, to run Java. How much memory do you have? Consider upgrading to XP. Mark Guzdial
On Windows 98, you will need to run JES-console. But, there is a little bit of troubleshooting that we can do. First, open an MS-DOS prompt. You can find this program near the bottom of your start menu "Programs" area. Then, change directory into the place where you installed JES: most likely C:\JES. You can do this by typing "cd c:\JES". Then run the program JES-console.exe. You should get a bunch of lines of text, and the bottom one (when JES crashes) should explain why it didn't work. Adam Wilson
Has anyone been able to turn in the assignment using the turnin feature? I am getting the same error as the above listed post. If not is it necessary that I zip the files before sending them to the TA?
The turnin feature should be working now (1.13.2004) Larry Olson
I have a question about example2() in the lab. I guess I'm not really sure what it's (or I'm!) supposed to be doing. For writePictureTo at the end I chose the barbara.jpg. Should I chose a different picture file for the writePictureTo? :)
Yes, you should probably use something other than barbara.jpg. The purpose of writePictureTo() is to make a fresh picture on your harddrive that you can access outside of JES( ie for part B of lab2) Larry Olson
When we type example2() in the command area to run the program, the box (window) appears and we pick a file, do we pick the same file that we chose in the program writePictureTo(picture, choose-the-same-file-as-this-one)? Thanks.
IYou should pick a different file. Unless you've run the program before, the file that you use in writePictureTo won't exist when pickAFile is called. If you do run the program twice and pick the same file, can you predict what the picture will look like? Adam Wilson
I am still getting the turnin error, even after the message about the feature working now. Anyone with the same problem?
If you are getting an error on turnin, first make sure that you have a file open in your main JES window. If you still get an error, email me or Larry with your GT number and we'll see if it's a problem on our end. Adam Wilson
I keep getting the error "A local or global name could not be found." What does this mean? I am running redhat 9. I have the following line of code to describe barbara.jpg
file = "/home/wazzles/mediasources/barbara.jpg"
Thanks
You're getting the error when you type that line? What's your NEXT line? I'm guessing that it's the next line that's causing the error. Mark Guzdial
For part b of Lab2, when we doublespace the first 3 paragraphs, should we highlight the paragraphs individually and then doublespace them (so that the spacing in-between the paragraphs would be the same size) or should we select the 3 paragraphs alltogether and then doublespace them (so that there is a bigger spacing in-between the paragraphs)? Thanks!
You can just highlight them all and double-space at the same time, but if you do it the other way it isn't a big deal by any means. The point is that you know how to manipulate in Word, the grading isn't going to be so picky in that respect. Summer McWilliams
I completed my Lab 2 assignment last night and submitted it via JES. I got a message saying that it was turned in successfully. Today, I tried to open my lab2 assignment through JES and I realized it was a zip file. When I clicked on it, a bunch of squares and weird characters showed up. Then I accidentally clicked on Save. Then I tried to unzip it, but it said "The compressed file is invalid or corrupted." Is there any way for me to see what I actually turned in or for you to check whether you can open/read my lab2? Also, is there a way to retrieve the lab that I completed yesterday (instead of today's version after I clicked on Save)?
Also, do you know when the Turnin Verification Page will be updated so that I can check what I turned in?
JES will create a new ZIP of your submission if you turnin the assignment again. Go back to the lab2a.py file and open that. Then follow the lab instructions for submitting (make sure to attach the word file) and submit your assignment again. Although, if everything seemed to go alright the first time and your id is on the turnin page, there should be no reason to worry. That being said, there is nothing wrong with turning in more than one copy of the assignment before it is due. All versions will be available and the TAs will grade the most recent turnin and reference older versions if there is a problem. I believe the Turnin Verification Page is now up so make sure you check to see that your id appears under the assignment you have submitted. Greg Leo
The MS-DOS says, "can't write index files" - this is regarding the above question about JES not working on Windows 98
Hmm – haven't seen that error before. How full is your hard disk? Perhaps it doesn't have space to write out whatever index files it wants? (JES doesn't do anything with "index files," so that's an issue about your computer more generally – we didn't cause that error.) Mark Guzdial
I don't have a Jes.console.exe???
Jes-console.exe, not Jes.console.exe. Mark Guzdial
For both examples 1 and 2 I can get the original picture to show however, when I try to get the 2nd picture to show it says that I have a syntax error.
For instance, for number 1 I typed in
it will show the picture but not show anything after show(picture).Same deal for the 2nd problem. It keeps saying that I have a syntax error but I typed it exactly how it is given in the lab. Any help you could provide me with would be great, thanks.
Two important things to remeber when posting problems on the coweb.
1. Always include the full text of the error. 2. Check the FAQ for instructions on preserving code spacing in posts.
As for your problem, everything seems to work ok for me. Post the full error and I'll try to be of a little more aid. Greg Leo
In lab 2 part b, is the "ASCII" the chart at the end?
Yes the ASCII is the chart of programming languages (words and dates) at the bottom. Beautiful eh? Greg Leo
I found the lab2a.py file but when i click for it to open with JES, it shows the JES picture but then nothing happens. Therefore, I can't open it. What should I do?
If you are sure it will not open, you can either redo that part of the lab or just trust that everything is alright with the last one. I can't see why there would be a problem with it if the turnin went ok and your id is under the turnin page. Greg Leo
When I type example2() in the command area, I am getting the following message:
"An attempt was made to call a function with a parameter of an invalid type. This means that you did something such as trying to pass a string to a method that is expecting an integer.
Please check line 16 of C:\Documents and Settings\Jonathan\My Documents\lab2a.py"
It is highlighting line 16, which is:
picture = makePicture(file)
Why would this be a problem if it is identical to the same part in example 1?
Does it have anything to do with
writePictureTo(picture, r"C:\JES\mediasources\myPicture.jpg"
at the end of example2()?
Ahh yes... What is happening here is you a choosing a file that makePicture() cannot use. Keep in mind makePicture() takes only JPG files as input. When you give makePicture() something that is not a JPG picture, you will get this error. Similarly, a function we will see later makeSound() only takes WAV files as input. If you are certain you are selecting a JPG, try another picture. Any of the pictures in the media sources should work just fine. Greg Leo
Please ignore my last question. That part is fixed.
Glad you got it worked out! Isn't debugging fun? Greg Leo
Thanks for the help on that last part!
I recently tried submitting my Lab 2 through JES and recieved the same error message as others have, "An unexpected error has ocurred in the turnin process. It is likely that the program turnin failed. Please check JES's settings and resubmit the assignment". Well, I tried to look at the Turning in Assigments sections under Help in JES and where it says to check your settings, that does not appear in my JES. I also checked the turn in pages for each of the TA's and it seems like people have had success turning it in. So I'm not sure what's going on. Megan Merriman
I changed my recitation time, so now I have a different TA but my lab is coming up in my old TA's page? Amanda Cook
I had the same thing happen to mine where it wouldn't submit because of an unexpected error. Go back and look at your registration settings. If you have your student # as the 901... number, go change it to your gtg number. that worked for me.
Amanda, we'll check. Megan, your "settings" are the "Register..." settings under the "Turnin" menu. Like the above mentioned – use your prism/mail ID, not your 901 GTid. Mark Guzdial
I posted earlier about having a problem with getting the 2nd pictures to show up. I can get the original picture to show up but not the augmented one. I am typing EXACTLY what is given to us in lab 2. The full error message that comes up is "Your code contains at least one syntax error, meaning it is not legal jython." I do not know what I'm doing wrong, help!
Go to the options menu in the edit pull-down. On the window that pops up, change mode to "Expert" and run your program again. It will give you more information about what is wrong with the code. Adam Wilson
I'm running the online version of JES on my laptop, which runs Win98SE and has 160MB of memory. JES works fine (a little slower, but that's OK). I finished lab2 last night (1/13) and could not turnin my assignment. On the Assignment dialog box, the file lab2a.py was there and the word file was attached. I could not choose "lab2" from the pull-down menu. The only option it had was "Assignements," so JES did not let me turn it in. What's going on? no more
It means that you probably weren't online. JES downloads the list of assignments that you can turn in when you start the turnin process. So if you're going to turn in your assignment, make sure you're online first. Adam Wilson
I posted about receiving an message that says "Your code contains at least one syntax error, meaning it is not legal jython", and I changed my mode to "expert" but it still is not giving me additional information about the problem... I don't know what to do :(
Print out your code and bring it to a breakout session or to office hours of a TA or instructor. We'll help. Mark Guzdial
jes seems unable to read .jpg files on my computer as images. i tried the make picture and show picture commands and the error message is that the input -the jpeg file- is not an image. anastasia duckworth
Anastasia, you probably have Java installed on your computer, but it's an older version. Older versions of Java can't read images through JES. Go to http://www.java.sun.com and download a new "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)." It's free. Mark Guzdial
I keep getting an error, saying: makePicture(filename): There is no file at C:\JES\mediasources\barbara.jpg
An error occurred attempting to pass an argument to a function.
Please check line 3 of C:\Documents and Settings\MONICA\My Documents\lab2a.py
Make sure that your path to the barbara picture is correct. Go to your Mediasources folder and look for not only barbara to be in there, but also that the "address bar" at the top of your screen says C:\JES\mediasources (if your address bar doesn't show up go to view and toolbars and select address). You may need to alter that path in your code if you saved your Mediasources in another place. Summer McWilliams
I was online. I've just checked with the TA at my breakout session and he told me that probably Lab2 was not loaded into the system yet. I'll try again tonight. Thanks. no more
I've been trying to load the second picture for a while now, and JES keeps telling me the same thing:
>>> example2( )
writePictureTo(pict,filename): Path is not valid
An error occurred attempting to pass an argument to a function.
Please check line 23 of C:\Documents and Settings\Karin\My Documents\lab2a.py
I have no idea what to do...I checked my MediaSources file and its address was "D:\MediaSources", so I tried using that as my address (I replaced the portion that said "C:\JES\mediasources" with "D:\MediaSources", but that didn't work).
Karin Bowman
Nevermind, I fixed my problem ;) Karin Bowman
On part 2 of the lab, should we ignore the spell check when it corrects things we don't know about (i.e. names of programs or a topic that is unfamiliar to us?) Karin Bowman
If you dont know about a topic enough to spell it then try and learn about it. If that fails... then ignore it. Larry Olson
For part b of the lab, do you add the picture that we chose or the barbara.jpg? Also for part b do we pick the manipulated picture of those two or the one that is not manipulated.
I'm getting an error that says:
makePicture(filename): There is no file at C:\JES\mediasources\barbara.jpg
An error occurred attempting to pass an argument to a function.
Please check line 5 of C:\My Documents\lab2a.py.
I answered that question earlier, and I expounded on it below...
When I go to my mediasources folder and click on barbara, the address bar only says "mediasources" and address under view toolbars is already selected. I have no clue what to do! HELP!
Ok, in that case look at the steps you went through to get to the mediasources folder. That's going to be the path to barbara.jpg. If you went to "My Computer" and then to the JES folder and then to the Mediasources folder, your path would look like "C:\JES\mediasources\barbara.jpg", but since you are getting an error saying that your file does not exist, your mediasources is probably not saved in the JES folder in the C-drive. Go through and watch the names of the files you click on, and those should be the path to your file. Summer McWilliams
For spellcheck, should all of the program names be caps because that is coming up as underlined in red but I did not change them to caps.
Yeah, if they were like that when you opened it, leave them as they are, any spelling errors that you need to correct with SpellCheck will be easily recognizible to you. Summer McWilliams
I am also getting a similar error message as stated above, for example 1. I get the......... makePicture(filename): There is no file at C:\JES Software\mediasources\barbara.jpg
An error occurred attempting to pass an argument to a function.
Please check line 3 of C:\Documents and Settings\Jonathan Longhitano\My Documents\lab2a.py..........error message. I have tried renaming the filepath numerous times, and it is not working. I have typed exactly where the picture is on my computer, and it still is not working, any help you can provide would be appreciated.
As an addendum, when I do example 2 it works fine. Jonathan Longhitano
Hmmm... have you tried changing the picture you are using? Try doing it with a picture that you maybe even already have saved on your computer and see if it works with that one. Summer McWilliams
I did JES portion of the lab. I had finished part a of the lab and also completed half of part b on word pad. I don't have Microsoft Word so I was unable to complete the rest of part b. What should I do? |Goto the Library or some other computer cluster and and use Word there Larry Olson|
My JES Settings only include an option to put my name and my gt#. However, there is no option for me to put my mail server. So therefore, everytime I try to turn in lab 2, it says that 'an unexpected error has occured in the turnin process. It is likely that the turnin process has failed. Please check JES's settings and resubmit the assignment.'
JES doesn't use an e-mail server to turnin, it uploads your assignment to the Coweb. Make sure you are using your "gt(letter)(three numbers)(letter) gt# and not that new 9 digit gtID. Summer McWilliams
Are we supposed to attach lab2a.py along with lab2b when we turn it in? Or is lab2a.py automatically submitted from JES?
The JES part of the lab is "automatically included" in the file when you submit. There is no need to attach it. Summer McWilliams
I typed this code in:
def example2():
file = pickAFile
picture = makePicture(file)
show(picture)
for pixel in getPixels(picture):
redValue = getRed(pixel)
newColor = makeColor( redValue, 0, 255 - redValue)
I did exactly what the lab said but when i type example2() into the command area it just says:
>>> example2()
An attempt was made to call a function with a parameter of an invalid type. This means that you did something such as trying to pass a string to a method that is expecting an integer.
Please check line 15 of C:\Documents and Settings\BAILLIE HOMIRE\Desktop\CS 1315\lab2a
What does that mean? And why won't the window pop up and let me pick a file? thanks :)
You missed the () after pickAFile(). So instead of "file" being a filename, you made "file" another name for the function "pickAFile." When you passed "file" into makePicture, you were not passing in a filename. You were passing an input (parameter) of type "function" instead of type "filename" (string). Mark Guzdial
How soon should my GT# be posted on the turnin page after I've submitted my lab? I sent it this morning, with apparent success according to JES, but I'm not listed on the turnin page. UPDATE: Found it, thanks, disregard!
Whenever I try to paste in the code from the website all it does is copy the first line. After hitting enter to go to the next line all it does is give me "..." instead of the ">>>"? I installed Java and it still doesn't work. Help?!!?!
You need to paste the code in the Editor Area (that's the larger white area on the top). That's where you'll be writing all your programs for the class. The black area is the Command Area. That's where you can give instructions to Jython one at a time. Adam Wilson
I keep getting an error saying that the file doesn't exist and it can't makePicture, but i've gone into the folder, clicked on the picture, and copied the pathway it had on the address bar and it still won't work. I know other people have been having the same problem and i've read your replies to them, tried them, and still, no luck. I don't know what i'm doing wrong. Can i delete it and start over? or would that even help?? Thanks for any assistance
Nevermind, i figured it out...sorry!
For the first part of the lab I copied and pasted the code, and downloaded the images. I wrote out the path to the image, and when I try to run the program all I get is errors saying the file doesn't
exist.
Check you path you may have downloaded and copy pasted things but it is entirely possible that the picture is downloaded to a different folder than the one specified in JES by the Lab Larry Olson
ok, i tried to attach my word document, but it said that i must choose an assignment first. all it says under the assigment bar is assignment. it says it cant send the word document. i've attached it, but it refuses to send without my selecting an assignment. how do i do this? can't i just email...geez guys, this is a struggle.
After you click on turnin and then assignment, a box should pop up with "name", "submitting file", "Assignments to submit", and then there should be two text boxes. If you have not selected an assignemnt to submit then the "Assignments to submit" area will just say assignments. Click on "assignments" and you should get a box with a list of assingments. Larry Olson
yeah, mine doesnt say LAB2 on the pull down menu. How am I supposed to turn it in?
Try again on the pull down menu scroll up and down the menu Larry Olson
RE: LAB2 NOT THERE WHEN TRYING TO TURNIN - Hey, mine didn't say lab2 either (only assignment) on the pull down menu and I wasn't online - once I got online the problem was fixed. Hope this helps.
i'm on the gt network. how am i not online?
Good question. Of which I have no answer... sorry! I'm off campus. I'm sure they'll chime in with a solution in no time.
You want to go to Turnin on the JES toolbar, and click assignment (assuming you have registered, which you are supposed to do). This will open a new window in which you can select the assignment to be turned in and add attachments. You should select Lab2 and attach your document. You need to be online to turnin. Lauren Forbes
I try to get my picture to put it into my word doc. but it won't let me. >>> writePictureTo(picture, "C:\newpicture.jpg") It just returns an error. A local or global name could not be found. You need to define the function or variable before you try to use it in any way.
I am assuming you copy-pasted lab2 code into JES and ran that. Youll notice that in the lab example2() has writePictureTo() written into it, try to modify that instead of using the command line Larry Olson
I've been registered, and I've pulled down the assignemnt taskbar, and there is nothing there but assignment. I am online; I'm on the gt network. Is there anyone who can actually answer my question or explain what's going on? Should I just email it?
If all else fails read the rest of the lab ... YOU CANNOT EMAIL YOUR TA CODE. Thats what the turnin Swiki is for. In lab2 part A instructions were given for attaching code DIRECTLY to your TA's turnin page. If you cannot get JES to work then attach them both to the swiki Larry Olson
I am in the recitation with TA Kelly Farrell on Tuesdays at 3, but my LAB 2 keeps posting under Jennifer Grabowski. I'm assuming this is because I switched lecture times and therefore got another recitation time, and Jennifer was my old TA. Is there anything I should do to fix this? Thanks, Marggee Godbee
That is being fixed as we speak ... one set of rolls was not in agreement with the other Larry Olson
I know several people have been having trouble with example 1's image. I downloaded the new JAVA, I made sure the path was correct, the mediasources folder is indeed in the JES folder, but I'm still getting:
makePicture(filename): There is no file at C:\JES\mediasources\barbara.jpg
An error occurred attempting to pass an argument to a function.
Please check line 5 of C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\lab2a.py
Could you tell me what I am doing wrong? Thank you!
Did you make sure to put a lower case r in front of the filename if using Windows?
Have you opened up the mediasources folder to see if you do have the picture and that you have it at the same address?
On lab 2 part B, the Microsoft Word section, step 9 says:
"On the new page, Insert the picture you wrote out (using writePictureTo()) from part A of this Lab."
Does this mean that we are to load it to the Word document through the writePictureTo command, or can we just insert it by selecting >Insert >Picture >From File?
Thanks.
You can just insert the file from wherever you saved it. Lauren Forbes
Thanks for the help, Lauren.
yes i did put a lower case r in front of it. Funny thing is, example2's image works for me....but example1's image won't.
In example 2 you pick the file instead of writing the address into the code - that should be the only difference until you add the writePictureTo(). So, it is likely that the address you are using in the program is not actually where you have the file on your computer. Find the file and check the address... it is probably not exactly the same as the address used in the example in the instructions. Lauren Forbes
How do I check the address of the file? (Please excuse my ignorance)
Go to "My computer", then find where you saved JES (probably in your C: drive). Then find your mediasources folder. The address in the address bar at the top of the window is the location of the picture. Lauren Forbes
I can't turn in my lab through the regular method. I uploaded it on the attach page, and two files showed up with the same filenames I used, but my name/gte#, etc. doesn't appear next to them. How do I verify it's my lab?
Should I e-mail my lab to my TA (Keith McDermott)?
I answered this question on the Soapbox, also, donot email your TA with turnins, only with questions. Larry Olson
Lauren.....you're an angel!!!! Thanks so much!
I am having the same problem as many people have mentioned before regarding the images showing up. I did EVERYTHING mentioned and my images still don't appear on either example. Please tell me what I am doing wrong. My lab is finished except for these programs working, and I've been trying to tweek it for many hours. Please help. What could I be doing wrong? Does it matter if the zip file and the cd are both installed? Would that cause a problem? Thanks, SHoy ALlisOn
I went ahead and deleted the zip folder and the programs still don't work. It still will not recognize the image. -Shoy
Are you getting any error meassages?
yes the same ones as above:
load image failed.
Was unable to load the image in C:\\JES\\MediaSources\\barbara.jpg
Make sure it's a valid image file.
show(picture): Input is not a picture
An error occurred attempting to pass an argument to a function.
Please check line blah blah of C:\blah blah lab2a.py
But my path was C:\\JES.1\\MediaSources\\barbara.jpg cause that was the path when followed and the image was there.
Notice the little .1 after JES, different paths. Rewrite the one line of code above to reflect the JES.1 path and you should be cool Larry Olson
That's what I did. Trust me I tried everything!
Your code had the line: file = r"C:\JES.1\MediaSources\barbara.jpg" ? according to your error you have:C:\\JES\\MediaSources\\barbara.jpg What kinda of computer are you on? Does example2() work? Larry Olson
I saw someone had posted a question about getting two error messages (the system cannot find the file specified and error accessing file/directory classes) after trying to fix the 'unsuitable JRE' message when opening JES. I cannot find that question now and am very confused on what I am supposed to do. Caroline McCormick
I've had a few people ask me about the problem. The version of Java that comes with JES should work on all windows platforms, but it isn't being detected on some configutrations. The solution that worked for all of them was to download and install the online version of JES: http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/mediaComp-plan/94. Just unzip it and try to run it. If that still doesn't work, im or email me. Adam Wilson
The problem was worked out when I went to my computer to try the lab. Mine used Windows 2000. The computer I was on before had Windows XP. Maybe that had something to do with it. -Shoy Allison
"load image failed" can also mean that you need to upgrade your version of Java at http://www.java.sun.com. The errors about "not finding the file specified" and "error accessing file/directory classes" can also be caused by (a) moving JES.exe (the snake) out of the JES directory (e.g., onto the desktop) or (b) trying to open JES while it's still in the Zip window. Always unzip/extract it first, and leave the snake in the folder. It won't work otherwise. Mark Guzdial
I have been trying to resubmit my Lab 2 assignment (at the request of my grading TA). When I submit, the hourglass appears, spins, and never stops spinning. Any suggestions? Clarke
I did my power point, but when i go to JES to turn it in i get the error.
"turnin cannot complete there is no file open to submit, or the current file has not been saved"
my real question is whether or not this is a Jes thing, or is my power point screwwed up?
if we use picture or sound files on the powerpoint presentation, do we need to attach those to the turnin, or are they automatically saved with the entire presentation? –Thanks
They should be automatically saved with the presentation. You can always save it to your computer, close it, and then open it again, and make sure they are there to double check. Kelly Farrell
So, when I try to turn in the presentation, it is telling me that "there is no file open to submit or that the file has not been saved". Does this mean that I save an empty JES file as "Lab 3" and then just attach the "lab3.ppt" to the empty file?
Do we need to include a slide that documents our sources, like a works cited slide? Thanks.
It's not part of the critera (look on the lab 3 instructions), but if you want to that's fine, especially if you quote something (since it's technically plagiarism if you don't in that case). Summer McWilliams
Would you rather us put the slides on a timer or make it so that you can manually change them using the spacebar? Thanks.
It shouldn't matter, but I would prefer manually. But just make sure you have a slide transition. Houman Khalili
Is there somewhere we can get powerpoint if we don't have it already on our computer?
You can get the PowerPoint Viewer if you do not own a copy of PowerPoint that will allow you to watch presentations (like the lectures) but will not allow you to edit or create them. You can download it from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7C404E8E-5513-46C4-AA4F-058A84A37DF1&displaylang=EN
Hope this helps! Gavin Mead
it says in the directions for lab3 to save the ppt as lab3 then later it says attach lab4.ppt....i'm confised!
It is fixed. You are turning in Lab3.ppt
I am a kind of confused with the topic. My topic is computer and art(DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY: Photo-Manipulation )
Do I have to talk about the usage of computer in each step of photo-Manipulation?
Don't worry too much about your research and information on the slides being perfect and including every aspect. Just make sure you include the necessary information and meet the requirements for Powerpoint. Summer McWilliams
I am going to design my slides for "Genetic Testing". and in one of my slides I am going to talk about the usage of computer. Is is enough?
RE: Animating Pictures. I have PowerPoint 2003. There is NO "Animation Settings" choice under EITHER "Tools" OR "Slide show". I've checked animation-everything-remotely-called-this and it isn't there. And where is "build"? Maybe since I can't find animation settings explains why there's no build anywhere. Anyone??
I think it is called Custom Animation under Slide Show.
"Custom Animation" is what it's called in the PowerPoint I have. Yes, computer use in Genetic Testing is okay by me. Mark Guzdial
What user name and password do we use for WebWork?
Your username is your gt# (as in gtg814h), you'll have to set up an account to get a password. There should be a link on the main page that says "Forgot your passoword, need a new one?" or soemthing like that. Summer McWilliams
RE: Custom Animation answers. Thanks!
can we collaborate on this lab?
Collaboration is allowed, but you have to list the people that you work with. Stephanie Weitzel
I already have Power Point Viewer 97, which won't let me create any slides. How can I get Power Point?
I researched a topic that interested me and then was checking over the requirements only to realize that it had to be computer science related. I have a 4 month old son, so I reseached learning behavior of babies. Do I need to do the entire presentation over again on a new topic?
Can you find a way to relate it to computing? i.e. through cognitive science? (Maybe babies are being study to attempt to build computer simulations that learn like humans do) If you can bring the computers in I think it would be good. If not I think it will need redoingLarry Olson
Has Lab 2 grades been posted to WebWork yet? Only Lab 1 is posted so far.
I am doing mine on the Genome Project, however, there are only a couple of steps where the process is computer related. I am going to include the use of computers in one slide. Is this enough or des the entire presentation have to be about th use of computers?
Could someone clarify for me what exactly a "slide transition" is?
It's just different ways to animate the entrance and exit of slides. Same concept as text animation.
what is the editor area to write a commment in and save as lab.py? Is it the same as where we would write a recipe?
The editor area is where you write your recipes Larry Olson
A slide transition is used to help one slide change to the next (ex: have the slide fade into another). In this lab, you must use at least one. The lab instructions explain how to do so. Stephanie Weitzel
are the grades for our first lab up yet, and if so where? thanks
I tried to turn in my lab but it says my powerpoint file is not found and accessis denid. how do i turn this in?
ok...i just sent it to my TA, which is what it said in the help section of JES
I am having the same problem turning in Lab 3 as others above. I get the error message "..no file open to submit, or the current file has not been saved". Please give me a more complete answer on what to do. I am following directions from Lab 2 turn in.
for the above question - you have to save a blank JES file as Lab3.py first, then attach your powerpoint when you turn it in. Hope this helps.
I am getting the same "turnin cannot complete there is no file open to submit, or the current file has not been saved" message when i try to turn in my lab 3, what do i do?
open something in the program area of JES, then try to submit your file. Stephanie Weitzel
I put my webpage on prism, and everything shows up but the picture for my pop up and an error shows up when the mouse runs over it, so the pop-up does not show. i copied the program like in the instructions and added my own website and attached the picture. why won't it work? is there anything wrong with the program i copied? Shoy Allison
Common error that I'm hearing about: You create your Lab4 page on Prism, but don't notice that the two pictures for permissions on your lab4 page and your public_html folder are DIFFERENT. The public_html folder must be set EXECUTABLE (those are the checks under the "X" column, besides the "R" and "W" columns). Mark Guzdial
Second common error: DO LINK YOUR COWEB PAGE TO BOTH OF YOUR WEB PAGES! The one that you upload as an HTML file to your CoWeb page, and the one that you upload to Prism. If it's not linked, your TA doesn't know where it is nor what you named it. Mark Guzdial
I'm having trouble getting my heading on my home page to work. I used and and the title tags. When the title didn't appear out of the body, I tried putting it in the body as a heading, and it still didn't work. What am I doing wrong? Lindsey Richardson
I also used the heading tags. Should the heading tags be put in the body or not? It didn't work either way for me. Lindsey Richardson
Heading tags go in the body. Send your page to your TA or me to take a look at. Mark Guzdial
I uploaded my website to Prism, along with my pictures, and when I go to view it everything shows up except for my pictures. I'm not sure why because when I check my permissions everything looks the same as it does in the instructions. I cannot figure out why they are not showing up. Megan Merriman
Check that the pictures are in the correct location, so if they are in the same directory, you should have something like, <img src="picture.jpg">. Also check the name of the picture, they are case sensitive, so if the filename is Picture.jpg, it wouldn't show up. Houman Khalili
I'm confused about the second common error. If you create a page on prism is alright just to put a link to your prism page on that page that we signed in for who's who? Melanie Nelson
I'm confused about what to upload to the Coweb page. Do we upload the file "Lab4.html" on the Coweb w/ all the tags in it? Or just the images that we put on our Webpage?
You upload Lab4.html and all the pictures that you might need. We'll be going over it in Breakout this week. Mark Guzdial
I got this message when I tried to upload a picture of myself to my Who's Who page: Sorry, that password is incorrect (upload failed). Hit the back button and try again; otherwise, contact the system administrator to clear the lock.
What do I need to do? Lindsey Richardson
Don't upload to the Who's Who page – upload to YOUR named page on the Who's Who page! Your page shouldn't be locked unless you locked it. Mark Guzdial
IT WOULD BE GREAT IF WE DIDN'T HAVE TO WORK OVER SPRING BREAK AND ACTUALLY GOT A FULL BREAK.
COULD YOU PLEASE EXTEND THE DEADLINE FOR LAB4 TO 19TH, THE FRIDAY AFTER SPRING
BREAK?
I believe it was done this way so that you actually have 2 weeks to work on it if you want to. Normally, the lab would have been due the week after it was assigned, which would have meant this Friday–the week before spring break–don't you think having it due afterwards, when in fact you have plenty of time to get it done beforehand, is a whole lot better!
Exactly. It's not a really hard lab. Do it sooner, and you can ignore it during break. But if you're not comfortable getting it done this week, or you want to really spend time on your homepage, take the extra time. Mark Guzdial
Thanx mark.
This is kind of silly and not very important, but what do we use to indent a paragraph? I can find how to block indent, but I just want a regular indent. Kristin Noell
I don't know! I suggest finding a website that has the kind of indent you want, then View Source to see how they did it. Mark Guzdial
Nevermind, you can't. You can, however type   to create a blank space. Just do it several times for an indent. Page has been removed
I've gotten my page started in JES but for me to be able to change anything on it I have to change it in Microsoft WordPad. I have to save changes to JES and write them into WordPad for the actual web page to change. How can I fix this? Deborah Stephens
I have been working on my web page and in order for me to make any changes on the page I have to save changes in JES and write them into Microsoft Word Pad. How do I fix this?
Deborah Stephens
Deborah, you should be able to save from JES and immediately view them in IE or from the CoWeb in IE. We'll be going over this at Breakout this week. Mark Guzdial
Regarding the question I was asked in class about flowing text around an image on a web page: the img tag takes an optional align argument in addition to the src argument. Experiment with align=top, align=middle, and align=bottom for the effect you want. You can also indent the text from the picture, so that it is not too close by using the hspace tag (with the value being set in pixels).
Example: <img src=mypicture.gif align=top hspace=50> Colin Potts
I've successfully uploaded the page to the CoWeb, but now when I click on the link, none of my cool background is showing and I get an X where my picture should be. What file is in the wrong spot? It works perfectly when I view it in the folder on my computer, but when I click on the link on coweb, I can't see the fruits of my labor.
Is your background a JEPG file in itself? You picture and that file will both have to be uploaded to the page as well before they will display corretly. And as a side note, remember you can't have any spaces or underscores in the names of your .jpg files you attach to the page. Summer McWilliams
I was just wondering how the extra credit points work on this lab. Do the extra points only average into our Lab grade or if we had a really high lab grade could it affect our quiz grade?
They'll be a part of your lab grade, but of course in the end, a really high lab grade can help your average. Summer McWilliams
I am so confused about this lab. I don't understand the directions at all. HOW are we doing this webpage? Are we writing it in JES? I hope we go over this in Breakout!
Make sure you go to breakout, because you are definitly talking about it there. But yes, you are typing everything into a JES file and saving it–do NOT load it though–and then uploading (attach) that file to your CoWeb page. Summer McWilliams
I'm trying to put this picture on my page in the center and make it a bit smaller than it is, but although it shows up it is still huge. This is what I'm using:
What's wrong? Kristin Noell
I completely agree with one of the messages above; this lab does not make any sense to me.
GO TO BREAKOUT! In one hour, we do EVERYTHING that you need to do for lab4. Mark Guzdial
Ummm, apparently my post didn't come out right... how do I type html without it interpreting it as html? :-) Kristin Noell
See the FAQ, Kristin. You have to type < instead of <. I've never used align=, but I think that your real problem is that you can't upload filenames with spaces in them to the CoWeb – they just won't work right. Mark Guzdial
i understand how to write html stuff. but i'm having trouble posting my page, i'm guessing it has something to do with DOC TYPE. i don't understand what this is, or how i get my page to work.... help: Arseni Zaitsev
I am having trouble putting a link it. It won't work. and I believe I have it correct. Is there some reason that it might not work? It doesn't show up at all.. Should I try just putting it in as text first? Jennifer Garrett
Arseni, could you explain what you mean by "having trouble" posting your page? Do you get an error? Does it not upload? Does it not show up? Having a bad DOCTYPE will NOT keep you from seeing the page. Jennifer, again, could you tell us what happens? Is the text underlined like a link? If it isn't, then your anchor tag is ill-formed. If nothing shows up, you don't have the text between the start and end anchor tags. Mark Guzdial
Aha! The text! Thanks very much.. Hehe. It would be nice to have something there to click. Jennifer Garrett
Okay One last question.. If we post to the prism server, and we create a link in our homepage, is that all we need to do as far as 'turnin' is concerned? Er, is there something else we need to do? Jennifer Garrett
No – the TA's will visit everyone's CoWeb pages and look for links to Lab 4 pages (Prism or just on CoWeb) for grading. Mark Guzdial
I can't upload to my Who's Who page. Just as the someone had mentioned before, my page is locked.Lauren Patton
Ignore what I just asked. Sorry~Lauren Patton
I followed all the instructions about loading the file onto prism, but still get a 403: Forbidden Access error. I've double checked, but all permissions are correct. Could it occur because of something wrong with the tags in the file itself? Anu Koppikar
No, tags don't impact the forbidden access error. The most likely cause is not setting the FOLDER to be EXECUTABLE (the "X" column). It's easy to miss that in the instructions. Mark Guzdial
Do I need to include an image file if I'm using an online animated gif? This is what I used to insert the image:
img src = "http://images.neopets.com/template_images/kacheekwalkgreen.gif"
Thanks. Anu Koppikar
No, if you're referencing elsewhere, you don't need to upload it. Mark Guzdial
PICTURES
For those who can't get your pictures to show. Make sure the .JPG is capatilized in your html file. Kevin Middlebrooks
No, that's not true, Kevin. Lowercase JPG will work too. The critical issue is that the FILENAME and the HTML reference MATCH. The case must be the same in both. Mark Guzdial
Ok, so I clicked on my name from the Who's who page, then I clicked attatch. BUT the page is locked and I don't remember ever locking it. How can I get it unlocked? Stephanie Grages
It's not locked, Stephanie – I just checked. Mark Guzdial
I am sure I am stupid for asking this question. I am completed with this lab with the extra credit. I posted it up on my prism website. How do I let you knwo that I am done? Are you simply going to check my website to see if it is there. My gt number is gtg634h. How do you know I am finished?????
Read the lab assignment again and earlier on this page. You must put a link from your CoWeb page to your prism page. Mark Guzdial
I can't get the pop-up picture to work right. How do I know what web address to put in the code? Where do I put what text I want to click on to get it to pop-up? And can I put a pop-up inside a table?
Sorry so many questions. Thanx, Amanda Slaughter
I don't know, Amanda. That's extra credit. Here's a suggestion: Find someone else's page that does the pop-up (e.g., from last semester's Who's Who), then View Source to see how they did it. Mark Guzdial
Also, how can I add in extra lines between paragraphs?
More paragraphs, e.g., put in more <p>. Mark Guzdial
I was having difficulties making a new line/paragraph and finally figured out how to do it, so I thought I would share in case anyone else had similar problems: you do <p>....</p>
:-)
I uploaded my html file and all the pictures to my coweb page but when I open the webpage the pictures aren't showing. They were working fine before I attached them all. One of the pictures won't show by itself when I click on
You probably have the paths to the pictures be specific to your computer. Mark Guzdial
I have edited my uploaded website because of an error I made. Now everytime I go to look at my website the old one keeps coming up instead of my newly edited webpage. I have put everything in the righ acme public file and saved everything in JES. I don't know why it won't bring up my new website. What do I do? Lauren Patton
Lauren, please be careful – when you uploaded this note, you deleted several other questions. I restored them from the history. For your question: Try hitting your browser's Refresh button. Mark Guzdial
I've uploaded my webpage to prism but I am unable to upload it to Swiki because it is locked. I'm not sure if I need to upload it to Swiki to have it graded, but if I do need to who can I contact to get my password?
I'm working on posting my webpage to prism, and I'm trying to set the permissions but I can't find the info button anywhere. There's no blue circle with an i in the middle on my toolbar. Am I just missing it? What could be the problem?
Are you using the same FTP tool that we recommended. Mark Guzdial
I'm off campus right now. When I tried to attach image to my webpage, a window popped up saying that I need to input password. I have already cleared out the lock but the problem still exists. What is the password? I have used my prism account password but it didn't work. Help!!I got to do it quickly!!!!
By the way, my GT number is gtg320p, my name is Ke Liang. The previous message is from me.
When I upload my webpage with WinSCP and then go to view it it tells me that there is a "You are not authorized to view this page", and I don't know what setting to go to change this. What should I do?
Read the lab – it explains it.
please ignore that last comment... my fault
Do all the requirements for the lab (para about ourselves, table, links) need to be on the same page, or can they be on different pages with links leading to them?
Thanks. Anu Koppikar
I went ahead and uploaded my page to the coweb to see what it would look like and now I cant figure out how to edit it! Any suggestions!?
someone erased my question from earlier...if my webpage shows up from both links (prism & coweb) on my who's who page, do I still need to download the pictures to my who's who page?? I never read anything about downloading them there, but others have been saying that it's a requirement.
When I go to my Who's Who page and I hit the attach button it asks me for a user name and password. Does anyone know what it is? page removed
I have seemingly completed my webpage, but my pictures appear on my prism website, but not on my coweb site. Why is this?
Did you upload the pictures to the CoWeb site. Mark Guzdial
I had the same problem as Amanda Cataldi. Could anyone help me? It is nearly the due date!!!!!(Ke Liang)
I need the password as well!!!
I can't upload to my Who's Who page. Just as the someone had mentioned before, my page is locked
If your page is locked, email me or your TA or instructor, and we'll unlock it. Mark Guzdial
wait wait, i need help resizing my photograph, it's huge!! where do i tell it the resize? inside the brackets? outside? im still confused
For user name try attach and password try carmen. Lauren Patton
My page showed up fine the first time I uploaded it but I made some changes and uploaded it again and it says that this server doesn't have permission to view uploaded images. Will it work on another computer?
Did you set the file permissions on the image that you just uploaded to Prism? Mark Guzdial
File permissions?
How do I change the border color of an image?
I attached my .html file to my page on the swiki, but when I click on the link, an error "Forbidden" comes up and tells me I do not have permission to access this upload. What is happening? I don't know how to fix this! catherine ann sistrunk
I had the same error! John Wilson
I had the same error as well, yet had no problem uploading to the Prism. I have checked over everything, and followed the instructions, yet I am still having trouble with posting to the coweb. Kelly Keevan
Me Too!!!!! What is going on? The website was down last night, and now it won't even let me see my page !!!
The TA's will be reading the HTML, right? or are they just going to view the page in a browser?
Yep, same here. Jaron Hendrix
I suggest just putting it on Prism, it wasn't very difficult.
does anyone know the password for being off campus, i emailed mark but still don't have a response
READ THE FAQ...that response was on the soapbox last night, too.
if my webpage shows up from both links (prism & coweb) on my who's who page, do I still need to download the pictures to my who's who page?? I never read anything about downloading them there, but others have been saying that it's a requirement. oh, and someone else viewed my webpages and the pictures still showed up (without uploading them).
thanks for all the help.
EXTENSIONS On Lab 5:
If you are having problems with "403 Forbidden" on the CoWeb, please contact me (Mark Guzdial) or your TA. We'll help you get it fixed, and you can have until 5 pm on Tuesday to get your Lab 5 posted. (Note that this is NOT including "403 Forbidden" errors on Prism – if you're getting those, FOLLOW THE LAB DIRECTIONS EXACTLY, especially with regard to setting the permissions/settings on the public_html folder!)
The CoWeb was down last night, but from what we can figure, only from 11 pm to 9 am, which doesn't impact everyone. We will give you until 8 pm tonight to post your Lab4 HTML page, to deal with with the lost time.
TA's will visit your CoWeb Who's Who page and look for links on that page, and will grade based on what they see there. Mark Guzdial
is lab 4 due at 5 on monday, and also, if we post our page to prism, how do we get it to our ta?
I posted my webpage to prism. How will you know I am done???? Are you going to check my prism account or what?? Do i need to do anything on coweb?
i noticed that on everyones who's who page, they have the lab4.html link. what it i loaded it to prism, can i not just put my prism web address?
i put my webpage on prism, but the pop-up does not work. the picture won't show and an error shows up so neither will the pop-up when the mouse runs over the pic. is there anything wrong with the program because i copy/pasted it? Shoy Allison
The TA's will check your coweb who's who page. You should put a link there to your prism web address.
when i look at my site on coweb only 1 of my 2 pictures is showing up. it worked perfectly before so i know that theres no problem in the html. i know i uploaded it correctly to my whos who page. what can i do?
I am having the same problem with pictures that Robert Woodhurst described under Lab 5 (below). I have uploaded them to my Who's Who page per the instructions in Lab 4, and they show up in the list of files uploaded to the page (this is the page you get by clicking "Attach"); however, the links on that page will not open the pictures. On my Who's Who page there are red-Xs, and in my .htm file that references the pics there are red-Xs. Please help! Michael Tashman
I was able to upload my pictures that are supposed to be on my webpage onto my page on the coweb and the pictures show up. However, when I upload the html file the pictures don't show up. Instead there are red x's. What did I do wrong? Tamerra Jones
I have 2 pictures on my webpage - and I've uploaded both of them to coweb. One shows up, and the other doesn't. Then when I click on my webpage, I get 2 red X's - I would think that the one picture would work, at least. Please help, I don't know what to do.
I went ahead and uploaded my page to the coweb to see what it would look like and now I cant figure out how to edit it! Any suggestions!?
Edit it on your hard disk, then re-upload it. Mark Guzdial
Ok, when I tried to upload my pictures to Coweb I clicked "attach" and did not get a username/password message. I clicked browse and selected my picture, then clicked upload and the jpg file appeared under the heading "Attachments to this page." When I clicked on view, though, I got that nasty red X. The pictures don't show up when I click on my html file either. Que pasa? Removed at RW's request
My guess is that you had spaces in the file name. Mark Guzdial
I posted re: this picture problem a few posts back – and I did not have spaces in the filenames. Michael Tashman
Well this is very interesting: when I uploaded the picture files, the filenames did not have spaces – they had underscores – but coweb evidently replaced the underscores with spaces! I hope that is the whole problem; I am currently off-campus and do not have the password so I can't re-upload to check, but I will try later. Michael Tashman
Yes, if you have underscores, CoWeb gets confused. No spaces or underscores. On Prism, you can have underscores, and even spaces, but you have to handle spaces very carefully to get them to work right. Mark Guzdial
When I try to make my average car weight and MPG Groups graph, my MPG groups show up as 0, 1, 2, ...instead of 0-19, 20-29.... on the x axis. What am I doing wrong?? I did it the same way as my Frequency and Car Weights Graph and the Car Weight Range categories showed up fine. Is it okay that my MPG groups just show up as 0,1,2...??
Do NOT START LAB5 YET! It's in the process of being re-written! Mark Guzdial
Go ahead and start Lab 5
Lab5 is now posted as it will be for the term. Mark Guzdial
Professor Guzdial,
Do you know exactly what changes were made to the Lab?? I did mine before spring break.....so I did the old version then. Please let me know! Thanks!
the prof shouldn't have to look for you...all that really matters are the requirements, which you can find out by reading the new assignment.
did i miss something? was lab 5 due this past tues?
"We'll help you get it fixed, and you can have until 5 pm on Tuesday to get your Lab 5 posted."
What? What about Lab 4? And is this Lab 5, b/c it says Lab 3 on the assignment
Do we need the other columns that we create to be set to two decimal places also?
Where do we save our histograms? Will they appear on top of our excel file when the TAs are grading them?
Whatever you can see is what we will be able to see. Place your histograms on the same spreadsheet (just off to the side) or on a fresh spreadsheet Larry Olson
.
Just to be sure: we answer the questions that don't involve actually altering the Excel file in JES, right? The instructions say to type answers in JES when instructed to, but nothing in the lab actually instructs us to.
oops, nevermind. i should read more closely
Every time I try to sort the data (particularly in problems 8 and 12), it messes up the new data, such as the column that just has the average in it (because it apparently gets sorted with the other data in row 2). I've tried highlighting certain sections, but to no avail. What am I doing wrong? Kristin Noell
Im not entirely sure what you are asking here and im not sure why you are sorting in problem 8 and 12. Just try to keep related values together Larry Olson
In Problem 11, are we supposed to subract by the previous range's formula if it is >20? When I did that, I got a negative average. Or do we just change the "20", to "30", etc., and that's it?
You arent just subtracting the previous cell and you arent just changing the range. You do need to do something here and youre almost there but not quite. Larry Olson
do we turn this lab in as lab4 b/c there is no lab 5 on my ta's turn in page?
turn it in as lab5 just wait on it, we are making the pages it should be there later today. Larry Olson
I think Kristin was maybe trying to say that when she sorts for Problem 9 (when doing the graphs part), the data that we formulated gets messed up. Does that matter? Technically you don't end up sorting the data at all when creating the histogram so is it ok to just proceed and make the histogram without messing anything up?
As long as the relationships are still there (the right car has the right MPG etc) then it doesnt matter that sort changes the way things look. Larry Olson
I am also having problems with #11. I know my formulas can't be right because as the range increases the results decrease. Here are my formulas and results:
I thought I would need to substract the beginning results from the later ones, but like someone said earlier - that results in negative numbers. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help!
Elizabeth Gignilliat
Ok, I tried something different. Here is the formula and answer for the range of 20-29:
A few questions...
1)If I'm not setting any of the other columns to have two decimal places, but my answer for #4 gives me two decimal places, is it a problem?
2)For #7, what exactly are we supposed to find? The variance of G2 and I310??
Thanks!! Karin Bowman
1) Column C should be set to two decimal places, none of the others need be set to two decimals. 2) You are supposed to find the Variance for the range of data starting at G2. Cell I330 is where you write the answer (write the VARP() function in cell I330). Larry Olson
First, I don't get the same number. I am getting 3421.75.
Also, when I do the same concept on the 40-49 block
(looking like =((SUMIF(C2:C328,"50",G2:G328)-SUMIF(C2:C328,"40",G2:G328))/((COUNTIF(C2:C328,"50"))-COUNTIF(C2:C328,"40"))))
it writes #DIV/0!. What am I doing wrong?
Your parenthesis are off in both cases that you have here. Technically speaking, the parenthesis in the question a few posts ago were also off. However, the right answers came out of that formula somehow. You need to figure out the entire top and then divide that by the entire bottom (if that makes sense). Larry Olson
Are the parentheses better here? To me, they seem to match up, but I am still receiving the same error message- "#DIV/0)
Ahhh, I just noticed something ... this particular issue was one I had never experienced in Excel before so I apologize for my slowness in catching onto what your error was. The error is in your test conditions. You are counting and summing only if things are exactly equal to 40, or 50. In our data set, there are no vehicles with an MPG of exactly 40 or 50. Thus, you are getting a divide by 0 error. You need to rewrite the conditions so that you look in ranges, not at single numbers. Get the larger range (everything less than 50) and get rid of the smaller range(everything less than 40). This makes me really wonder how that post above worked at all ... must be computer voodoo Larry Olson
Thanks! Now, the issue is that when I create the scatterplot, it should read with the MPG Groups as the labels for the X Axis correct? B/c even when I highlight the columns and create the scatterplot this way, the X Axis is still reading just 0 1 2 3 4 5 with points above 1 2 3 and 4. These points are at least at the correct 4 average weights but how do I fix this?
Don't worry about that, it will be fine as you have it Larry Olson
Okay: So I have been working on LAB5, and it seems somewhat disorganized. By the time problem 12 comes around we have added MULTIPLE columns. In problem 12 it tells us to SORT ONLY the originial columns, but WE CANNOT DO THIS WITH ALL THE NEW COLUMNS WE HAVE ADDED. If you try to highlight only the original cells that were provided to try to sort them THIS DOES NOT WORK, and ERROR pops up saying, "The command you choose cannot be performed with multiple selections. Select a single range and click the command again". So basically I cannot continue on with this assignment because I need to keep my spreadsheet AS IS so that it can be graded. I am not sure what to do... can anyone help??
I was able to sort only the original columns. I selected all of the cells that I wanted sorted, then clicked on data>sort. It gave me a list of options on how I wanted to sort (by MPG, ascending, descending etc). I chose to sort by descending MPG and it worked. No errors. Larry Olson
I was having the same problem, and I found out that if you "hide" the data that you don't want to sort, and then "unhide" it after sorting, everything works out the way it's suppose to. Just right-click the data you want to hide and unhide to use this function. Stephanie Henderson
Okay, I lied. It doesn't work. Sorry. Thought it would. So how do we fix this problem? It's messing up our averages and such. Stephanie Henderson
In problem 8, my SQRT functions are not returning the same result as the STDEV function. Could the number of decimal places have something to do with it? G and I both have the numbers rounded to the nearest integer, but I have tried changing these and I don't think that's the problem. What else could be happening? (The answers aren't totally off, but they don't match exactly.)
You should have three answers for this part. Two of them should be the same one of them should be slightly different Larry Olson
It says to save and turn in as lab3.py???? Shouldn't it be lab5.py??
I'm having the same problem on number 8 also. Are you getting like J2=859.3685798 and J3=860.6856206? Emily Malone
This is fine, three answers in the problem. Two should be the same and one should be just slightly off. Larry Olson
What is the difference between Excel VAR and based variance. In problem 7 we worked with Excel VARP and "The Excel version of this formula". I guess I'm just a little confused. Emily Malone
By the excel version of the formula, we mean the one you typed in by hand... SUM(I2:I328)/327. If you wanted a more indepth mathy answer of what is going on, come see me. Larry Olson
Would you please explain Problem 8.3. Is it asking us to use sqrt function similar to 8.1 except on cell I330 instead of I329 or is there some other way in Excel to calculate sq rt? +Clarke Collins+
Nope, no other easy way to calculate sqrt in excel, use the sqrt function on I330 same as you did on I329 Larry Olson
I am having a problem with counting the frequency of the weight (problem 9 and 10). I know I used the proper formulas for the frequencies, but I am getting 326, not 327. I even tried this formula =COUNTIF(G2:G328,"5000") and got 326. What am I doing wrong???poof #2
Larry, trying to follow your guidance on how to sort just the original columns, when I select the original columns and click data > select I get an error message saying" The command you chose cannot be preformed with multiple solutions. Select a single range and click the command again. Any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong? Clarke Collins
Sorry... for some reason there isn't a "" (less than sign) up there, although I inserted it. Please help!poof #2
Never mind about my question! I reread the problem and figured out that the number is 5500. Sorry!poof #2
I went ahead and followed the instructions by Excel select a single range, MPG to sort for Problem 12. Then continued to finish Problem 13. Now I see that the sort in Problem 12 has removed the bars from my chart made in Problem 9. I have recorded the formulas and answers in JES. Is that okay for the turn-in. clarke collins
When I try to create my graphs, it gives the following error message: "Maximum number of data series per chart is 255." How can I create my graphs correctly then? Stephanie Henderson
Try using a different version of EXCEL, perhaps the library cluster's Larry Olson
Can we use Excel 2003 for this assignment - or does it have to be Excel 2000? (I thought I read that somewhere)
If you can get it to work on 2003 then do it there. Otherwise, take it to Excel 2000 Larry Olson
Thanks, it worked in Excel 2003.
So in trying not to mess with the newly made columns when I sorted the columns in problem 12 I figured I would only choose a few at a time, but each time I try and to do that I get an error saying : The command you chose cannot be performed with multiple selections. Select a single range and click the command again.
But I can't choose the expand option, because I can't touch my other columns....so what should I do??
Yeah, so a lot of us it appears are having this issue. Any suggestions? Stephanie Henderson
Im having a hard time figuring out what is causing this sorting issue. Ive tried almost everything I can think of to get this error ... but i cant get it. Can one of you go through this problem and tell me EXACTLY word for word, step by step what your are doing? Alternately, have any of you tried to do this on a different copy of excel? If youre doing this at home or in the dorm, try to goto the library cluster or to a friend's. I know that it is possible to do this Sort because ive done it many times, im just not sure where each of your attempts is derailing. Alternatly, IM or email a TA to make an appointment to meet you on campus this weekend or early Monday if you can. As a side note if you are sorting data and it changes your graphs, then youve done something wrong. Also, what versions of excel are you using? Excel 2000, Excel OsX, Excel 2003, etc...Larry Olson
Okay, I think I was able to recreate the error. The way you make the column selection is important. If you use the Ctrl key to make the column selections you get that error. There could be other reasons, and I'm sure there are, but follow this if you get the The command you chose cannot be performed with multiple selections error. Left click on the first column label, A, so that the first column is selected. Now hold the shift key and left click on the last column label (i.e. 'G','H',etc.). That should select all the columns in between. And now you can click on Data > Sort, and that should take care of the error. Houman Khalili
If we just select the shift key, that selects every column in the middle, and that's where the trouble comes in. The "average" and "std. dev" columns are in the middle of the data, so when we sort everything, the four numbers in these two columns end up somewhere in the middle of our data instead of at the top. Is this something we should worry about? Stephanie Henderson
Can you please clarify an issue on number 13?
The directions are unclear as to whether I should be subtracting Average-Maximum, or Maximum-Average. Which one is it? Jonathan Laing
I am trying to do the copy formulas part of the lab, but when i try and paste the formula into the other cells a box pops up that says "The data on the clipboard is not the same size and shape as the selected area." and it won't let me paste. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas? thanks Jennifer Sigg
Yeah, number 13 is really unclear, It says "find the difference between each groups average" but which groups, and what types of averages?? We have a few to choose from, so if someone could please clairify. Thanks!
You should do Avg-Min and Max-Avg just like it says for the column headers. "Each group" as in the MPG 0-19, 20-29, etc... In problem 11, you found the avg weight of cars in each MPG group, and in 12 you found the min and max weights of each group. For the new columns in 13, you are finding the differences b/w the min/max and the avg for each MPG group. Lauren Forbes
I am REALLY confused on problem #8, especially part 3. I have already done part 1 and 2. For part one I typed in "SQRT(I329)" and it returned 859.37 in J2. For part two, I typed in "STDEV(G2:G328)" and it returned 860.69. Now I'm at part 3. I'm confused because I don't understand what it is I'm supposed to calculate, what the difference is between the other values, and etc. Also, I have noticed on previous postings that Larry said that out of the three values that we get for problem 8, two of them will be almost equal and another slightly off? I'm confused..please help! :( Kyla LeCroy
That is correct for the first two parts. For the third calculation, you want to find the SQRT of the value you found in I330. This gives you three values. The two that you already got should be very similar, and the final should be exactly the same as one of them. Lauren Forbes
I'm having the same problem with the sorting in problem 12. I tried to do what Houman said but I have new cells added inbetween the originals so those would be changes as well if I selected the first column and then the last so that it selects all the colums. I'm getting the same error...I don't know what to do....any help???
Solution for sorting: why don't you just take out the columns you don't want to be sorted, paste them in a new worksheet, sort the car-data-set worksheet and then paste the unsorted columns back into the car-data-set worksheet where they were before? Nicole Seekely
Correction: don't paste into new worksheet, but just temporarily paste at the end of you're current worksheet and the paste the columns (H,I,J) back to their original spot... if you put it in a new worksheet it creates errors when pasting back Nicole Seekely
Ok this is what I have for problem 11
C328,"30",G2:G328)-SUMIF(C2:C328,"20",G2:G328))/(COUNTIF(C2:C328,"50")
COUNTIF(C2:C328,"40")-COUNTIF(C2:C328,"30")-COUNTIF(C2:C328,"20"))))
This is my equation for the average weight for 30-39 but it has to be off based on my max and min for that range. help please!
Just so you know, all the less than symbols are there in excel. They just dont show up here.
so I'm on #9 and I don't know where the new columns are supposed to go...but I know that this presents an error later when you have to sort the data. Could someone please tell me in what new columns to put frequency & weight groups? thanks. Karin Bowman
You can place them in columns to the right of the original set of information Larry Olson
Okay so for problem 9, when I sort by car, it does it alphabetically. However, it changes the values that I had for the Stand Dev column, and it changes the values I had in I329 and I330. Is this supposed to happen? Jonathan Longhitano
This shouldnt happen, if this has happened, then youve made an error. Larry Olson
On problem 8, number 3: what is it asking us to do exactly?
Apply the sqrt function to the asked for cell Larry Olson
read the page. the questions has already been answered (why don't people read the page?).
i read the stupid page, im not a moron you jackass. what the hell is the Excel VAR-based variance?
The "Excel VAR-based variance" means on question 7 where you used the Excel VAR function to determine the variance, use whatever u got there to do part 3 of number 8, it should be the same as part 1...Make sense now?
is problem 12 asking for the MPG in descending or ascending order?
No, isn't the "Excel Var-basd variance" the formula we put into I329? If so, Larry above said that we take the SQRT of that number for part 8.3. It turns out you get the same answer, but it is the SQRT of the formula in I329, and not the SQRT of the VARP function...correct?
How are we supposed to sort only the "original data" columns when some of the "new" columns are between the original ones?
Sorting those columns doesnt change the charts or any of the anwers that I can see. Larry Olson
How many columns are we creating for question 12?
I just realized, for questions 11 and 12 aren't we leaving out numbers in the range? For example, it says for the first range to go from 0-19, and the second range from 20-29, so from 19-20 is omitted. But if you sort the data by ascending MPG you see that there are like 8 cars that are between 19 and 20 MPG, does this affect the results?
For question 13, my graph looks okay, but the x axis which is the MPG only goes from 0-5. The graph is decreasing as you go from left-right on the x axis. So if you wanted to put it in words, you would say, "going from right to left we see as MPG decreases as Avg Weight increases. Is this okay?
Also, on the method part of question 13, part 6. It says"... separated by commas – for each group, e.g. 300,50,260,800..." Are those the values we should have gotten for the Max-Weight-Min Weight?
how many graphs should we have? I have a column graph for the frequency and Car weights. i also have a scatterplot for the avg thingies.
This is my equation for the average weight for 30-39 but it has to be off based on my max and min for that range. help please!
Just so you know, all the less than symbols are there in excel. They just dont show up here.
For you people asking about sorting, why don't you guys actually read the page... a
OK...so don't insult people for asking questions... Now I have one, is it ok that in the scatter plot graph I have number 1,2,3,4 on the x-axis instead of the weight ranges. Is it ok that it is like this? If not, how do I fix it?
You dont have to but that is one way to do it. It can be on the same sheet or a different one, either is fine Larry Olson
Is anyone gonna aswer these questions. It's due at 5. You complain we don't ask, and when we do, you won't respond.
We also have been available to answer these questions since last week, and when you ask a ton of questions all at once, in one day, it is very difficult to get back to you right away. Maybe you should ask questions before the day it is due. We have and will continue to do our best to answer your questions to the best of our ability. Ashley Coker
so do we also attatch a scatter plot chart for #11? these directions are horrible!!!
I love it when no one responds.
(((SUMIF(C2:C328,"50",G2:G328)-SUMIF(C2:C328,"40",G2:G328)-SUMIF(C2:C328,"30",G2:G328)-SUMIF(C2:C328,"20",G2:G328))/(COUNTIF(C2:C328,"50")-COUNTIF(C2:C328,"40")-COUNTIF(C2:C328,"30")-COUNTIF(C2:C328,"20"))))
This is my equation for the average weight for 30-39 but it has to be off based on my max and min for that range. help please!
Just so you know, all the less than symbols are there in excel. They just dont show up here.
Can someone please help with this?
You are taking many ranges out of the problem. You only need the range from 30 - 39. Right now, you are taking <50 and wiping out<40, then <30, then <20. Unfortunately this takes some things out of the solution twice. Larry Olson
Just so y'all know, I do see your questions. I promise I'm not ignoring you, but I don't know how to answer these questions! I'm trying to figure them out as we speak, but I can't answer your quetions until I do figure them out... I'm so sorry!! If there are other students out there who know the answers to some of these questions, PLEASE (if you have time) could you help these other students out? I would GREATLY appreciate it, and I'm sure these other students would, too. Ashley Coker
It has been posted before–BUT IT HASN'T BEEN ANSWERED.
If this equation works for the MPG Ranges from 0-39, why not 40-49?
It has indeed been posted and answered. There are no less than signs in this. The issue is way up above near the top of this section Larry Olson
What happens if one turns in the assignment a little late...let's say less than an hour past due, do you get a zero or will the TA's just take points off?
You should probably ask your TA what he/she will do
