- Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 to the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Title IX has helped people through the years with equality.
One major part of Title Ix is athletics. All schools are included in Title IX (elementary all the way through colleges and universities. Not only does Title IX protcet students, it also protects the faculty that works with the students.
Things included in Title IX arescholarships, participation, coaching, game and practice times, medical and training facilities, publicity, travel per diem allowances, equipment and supplies, locker rooms, paractice and competitive facilities, recruitment of student athletes, and tutoring opportunities.
Even though all schools are supposed to comply with Title IX, not all of them do. Schools are supposed to lose federal funding if they don't comply. No school has actually lost federal funding, but many have had to pay substantial damages and attorney fees in cases brought to court.
In 1994, women earned 43% of law degrees, compared with 7% in 1972.
In 1994, 44% of all doctoral degrees to U.S. citizens went to women, up from 25% in 1977.
Mike Moyer, executive director of the National Wrestling Coaches
Association: "We're prepared to do whatever it takes to eliminate the gender quota. ... There shouldn't be any gender discrimination, period, and there's serious discrimination going on against men."
I don't think that Title IX discriminates againts men's sports. It is only trying to make everything equal. Women have come a long way to be equal.
"There is a myth circulating that football will die if girls and women are given equal opportunities in sport. The myth continues that football is the proverbial goose that lays the golden egg and if it dies, all remaining men's and women's sports supported by its revenues will also die. It is important to know that football will not die and football is not the golden goose."
There are many reasons that Title IX is good.
· Teenage female athletes are less than half as likely to get pregnant as female non-athletes (5% and 11%, respectively), are more likely to report that they had never had sexual intercourse than female non-athletes (54% and 41%, respectively), and are more likely to experience their first sexual intercourse later in adolescence than female non-athletes (The Women's Sports Foundation Report: Sport and Teen Pregnancy, May 1998).
· Women who are active in sports and recreational activities as girls feel greater confidence, self-esteem and pride in their physical and social selves than those who were sedentary as kids (Miller Lite Report, 1985; Melpomene Institute, 1995).
These are only a few.
